I wouldn't be surprised if one of the others was where Virgin/Zavvi were in the Crescent S.C. in Limerick.

Zavvi should have stayed a Virgin.

I was in the blanch one the week before last with my Zavvi vouchers I got over a year ago. Glad I spent them as soon as I heard about the UK end of Zavvi going into administration.

Well there's quite a large HMV upstairs in Blanch, so I'd say that's the reason tbh.

The one in LV is on a massive sale at the minute, will it continue with this news? Do they lower prices further, or just hold stock for HMV? Do they own the stock now?

The man sets up Virgin, and then gets out in time to make a good bit of money of it. That shows a good businessperson.

Have been thinking the same myself..

Saying that, when you consider the reason by Zavvi has to be wound up, he doesn't get quite so much credit.

This is really bad news, I mean, its good that people in Zavvi Dundrum get to keep their jobs but in retrospect its sad because Zavvi and Virgin were both an institution and now thats gone.

I'm glad HMV bought Zavvi Liffey Valley, they have a better selection than Zavvi did

I'm delighted the Crescent Shopping Centre (Limerick) store will be staying open, but I'm concerned that HMV will be able to charge what they want. They have no retail competition in the City (Golden Disks & Empire are both poor attempts at music shops...)

Cork store gone so. Damn it! :(

I'm sure they know that if they price stock too high, they'll go down the drain as well.

Now that feels like an institution gone. I've heard Argos in Englands in trouble too. Could you imagine that whole lovely building with big graffiteed boards over the windows?

Me too. They've got a much better selection than Zavvi ever did and there prices have always seemed to be cheaper too. They tend to have really good sales on sometimes.

When Virgin's name changed to Zavvi, I found their prices got really expensive all of a sudden. I always found Golden Disc in Liffey Valley to be a lot cheaper than the Zavvi there. I was in their just before Christmas buying Greys Anatomy on DVD for a mate. It was €70 in Zavvi and it was on sale for €20 in Golden Disc. Fifty euros is a HUGE f***ing difference.

Good.at least HMV have a selection unlike zavvi and virgin who only have chart music by major labels ,if you want anything else you can fcuk off.HMV and abbey discs were the only places you could by any type of music in this country without bieng blasted with X wanker winners!

Went up to Zavvi in Liffey Valley today to try and use my vouchers. Was not surprised to hear that i couldn't use them due to their liquidation status (was kicking myself that i didn't go up sooner however). I was given a form to fill out to claim my voucher value but i'm not holding my breath as i have to send the form to the bl**din' liquidator. Im sure ill be on the priority list...I am disgusted they took the money in the first place when it was highly likely that they could not be redeemed. Usually a poor selection in there at the best of times so i won't be shedding too many tears.

When they sold vouchers it was never highly likely that they could not be redeemed. A couple of days after EUK went into administration they stopped selling them when they knew they might be getting into a a rut themselves, then the directors of the company set up a bank account and put money into it for people with giftcards that they administrators could not get at. there was no period when giftcards were sold knowing that the customers might not be able to use them.

I agree with people saying they're glad HMV are taking over Zavvi. Last summer I went into Zavvi looking to buy Arrested Development. They only had Seasons 2 and 3 for €50 each, but I hadnt seen the first so I left it. A few days later I was in HMV (its a good bit further away so I'm rarely in it). Seen Arrested Development. Bought all three seasons for €48.97. Saved over €100. Money well spent too I might add!

Not looking good for Sligo,I thought that Sligo would be a good spot for HMV but Zavvi here wasnt taken over.I read that HMV were in negotiations to buy more Zavvi stores but they are UK based shops!:(

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,556 ✭✭✭Nolanger

Even Golden Discs are better than Zavvi. The one in Dundrum only stocked mainly new movies on DVD - nothing out of the ordinary. Their CD section was abysmal - the same big names clogging up the shelves. Never bought anything there that couldn't be got from the other stores. Bring back Our Price :p.
