Hey McConkey, whats with all the unhappy faces. Everyone has days like this. You'll be back to your best in no time. SJ.

Hey SJ, yeah this little injury is having a bad effect on me alright-see so many people injured (way worse of course) posting in here so I guess I'm just a bit disappointed that this thing hasn't gone away already. The training is actually going well I suppose, my times, stamina and breathing are improving (from a low base though)-I'd never dream of stopping and going home when I'm out running and I pass my house on the route-thats massive for me and I don't want to stop now....maybe my forerunner will cheer me up if it ever arrives :)

Also I'm badly in need of a B12 injection, raising my hands above my head to look at sports clothes in the shops yesterday was actually physically beyond me after a few seconds. The injection will cheer me up, if I'm lucky I might get it tomorrow. Thought once a month would do, but I'd say with the running maybe every three weeks would be good-what will happen when I up the milage-who knows? Maybe she will teach me how to inject myself :pac: its in the rump (I.M.) anyway so can't be too difficult :)

In the mean time, I'm not too hungover after last night, am lying on the couch in my PJs with a cold pack on my leg-life is good :) Contemplating going for my 30 min HH walk now. Thanks for the words of encouragement :o

Supposed to do a thirty minute walk today-although I got a little carried away and jogged for the first 10 ish minutes, at a slow enough pace (10 min 52s/mile) just to do a bit without my knee strapped up, it might strengthen it up. Had a calf support on my right leg which helped a little I think.

did 30 min 10s and covered only 2.34 miles, considering I jogged for a mile I felt like it was a bit slow but 12min 53s/mile anyway. Going to ice the leg again now. Added my run mile to the challenge but not adding the walking miles :)

I am running the 5 mile next Sunday so hopefully my leg will improve before then...maybe my watch will arrive before I go back to Ennis on Wed  Damn snow!

Eek I feel really bad for adding my walking miles now:(. I thought it was ok as there are others on the table who are just walking and no running at all.

Hi Bally8, I had a big dilema going on about whether to put those walking miles in or not-I figured since the thread said 'how many miles have you run?' that I probably shouldn't. I started logging a couple of weeks into Jan so I wasn't sure if walking miles were allowed-bold me didn't read back through the whole thread.

So if we have concensus on that then I will add those miles-brilliant :D There aren't many but the walking is part of my Higdon plan and therefore my training. In that case I'll update later :)

Great, thanks for the heads up :)

Rest day today, so just relaxing and hoping my legs come good for tomorrows lovely 2m run (I've reached the end of the 1.5 milers now-they were handy, I'll miss them :))

Going to throw my walking miles into the 1000 mile comp mix then :)

McConkey - well done so far on all the training; I too remember saying goodbye to the short runs, but you'll feel great once you start covering the longer distances, and some day the likes of us will look back and think that 26.2 miles is a short run!!!:) Keep it up...!!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 506 ✭✭✭McConkey

Thanks Chatoon, I'm only adding another half mile to the short runs...you'd swear I was going to be running a half marathon tomorrow :) So far I think the program is quite good and would recommend it to any beginers as I feel my breathing, stamina etc is improving and I'm actually looking forward to getting out for my runs, so I guess that amounts to a well structured plan :)

Thanks for the encouragment, it's always good to hear from people that were in my position a while ago-keeps reminding me that it is possible to keep going and do this :)

    Hi McConkey,
Good luck in the 5 miler on Sun. Did you get the watch yet? I'm going to get one soon to help motivate me. I'm still finding it hard going but i was starting from a very low base. I'm up to 3.2miles 3 times a week, i just need to get off the concrete paths and onto grass and hopefully things will improve. I suppose its a marathon and not a sprint after all.The runners have turned out great and the back is holding up ok so all i need is a bit of good weather. Let us know what you think of the watch when you get it.
    Roll on the bright evenings
    Keep it up
    Cualaman

Hi Cualaman, good to see you are back on track and the back has recovered :) You just needed to break the runners in so? How did you resolve the back pain-see anyone?

You are covering more miles than me in those three days and I go out 5 times so we'll be neck and neck in the 1000 mile challenge again soon I'd say ;) .....no pressure on me then :) Paths are a PITA cos if its frosty they are so dangerous and then there is the up and down parts outside houses that can't be too good for the legs :( Unfortunately there don't seem to be too many places in Galway for off road running. There is a college facility near me-but it's almost too near if you get my drift :p

I'm enjoying running a lot these days but I think I have bigger variation in my weeks runs-check out Hal Hidgon Spring training....this week for instance I've a 2 mile, then 3 mile, then another 2, a walk on Sat and supposed to be a 3 mile on Sun-but hopefully I'll actually finish the 5 mile race and give the team another couple of valuable miles :)

By the way-sorry, no watch yet-Of any week in the year to order I had to pick the week London was snowbound :( Maybe today....

First I was like a kid at Christmas, now I've almost forgotten about it. I will post a new thread-I guess on the main page-when I get it as a few people have shown interest in finding out about them. If I notice any good or bad points about it, I'll post and I'll test its accuracy over one of my runs and let ye know how it goes :)

Now that my pedometer is broken I've gotten around to recalibrating my own watch and it's actually pretty accurate :o Shame it doesn't have a HRM

Was hoping my watch would arrive today before I head off home till Friday but no joy :(

Got a B12 top up injection today :) felt I needed it so hopefully that'll kick in soon. Went out for my two miles today, no knee support again to see if it helps strengthen up the knee. wore the calf support again but after a mile I had to stop and take it off as it didn't feel right. Leg felt funny after taking it off-like the muscle wasn't working to capacity with it.

Did 2.36 miles, felt tired and slow, however when i worked it out I was running at a 9min 46s/mile pace so can't complain really I guess. 2.36 miles in 23min 04s.

An extra 0.36 miles for the team :):P

I ran with a calf support for a couple of days hated ever step of it too, Think it was too tight ended up taking it off too.. I think with the calf you either are able to run or you rest..

Great progress by the well well done.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 506 ✭✭✭McConkey

Thanks guys, slow and steady progress, a small bit at a time and hopefully I'll get there in the end :) Even a little comment from someone in the logs can be enough to get me out on a lazy day so thanks :)

I hear ya about those calf supports alright shels4ever, I don't think I'll run with it again. The leg is just about better but I thought it would be good to support it but it seems fine after doing more than half the run without it. I think the support is probably ok for walking around during the day if necessary but defo not for the running

    should read 11.02.09

    3 miles/ 30 min 27s 10min 9s per mile. Kinda sore and tired

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 506 ✭✭✭McConkey

2 mile 20min/20 s (10min&10s/mile) really wrecked this night but managed to get out. Some good hills in the pitch black on slippy country roads :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 506 ✭✭✭McConkey

Rest day, body not feeling too great these past couple of days. Very tired. Walk early tomorrow and the 5 mile in Oranmore on Sun....will probably be a slow one :(

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 506 ✭✭✭McConkey

Nice walk today, hope tomorrows weather is similar as there was no real breeze or anything....nice after a tough week (not miles-wise, just tired).

Did 3.33 miles in 45min 47s (13min 44s/mile) Felt a bit of a niggle in the right leg again but hopefully it'll settle and tomorrow won't make it worse. I think I've narrowed it down to a pair of casual shoes I have but they wouldn't be great support-wise. Had some porridge today for the first time in about 20 years (!), hated the stuff as a kid, but mixed with some maple syrup it was not bad at all so I'll give it a blast again :)

Five miles tomorrow then, not sure exactly where the run is starting or what the hills are like as information seems fairly limited however I think I read somewhere that 97 people ran last year, which means a small field and probably not too much company for my run :(

Reading some of the Cupids Dash thread there and looks like people did really well, well done everybody:) It shows me that I have an awful long way to go as most of the times would be well below what I could manage my 5 mile in tomorrow despite the extra 1.2 miles  Still that what it's all about I suppose, getting better, stronger, faster....

    Good luck tomorrow!

Have you tried having porridge with dried fruit? I'm rather partial to it with some raisins and honey myself, then again I'm a *very* regular eater of the stuff (4-5 days a week).

Thanks Rainbow Kirby that sounds yummy actually, I may have to try that out :)

Hope you have a great time at Lordi tomorrow, Enjoy :)

    Maree 8km race day

    -what went right?
    Got up on time
Finished eating by 10.30 for the 1 o'clock race, all going well at this stage
Got there on time, did a litle warm up jog
Got the food and drink part right

    -what went wrong?
probably should have stayed a little bit further back in the pack (don't worry I wasn't toing the line was about half way back), though I was taking it handy and with such a small crowd-in nobodys way.
At 5km something happened to my heel, so I walked for a bit thinking it would go away, no such luck.

So ultimately I had to walk from 5km, over and over again I tried to run but couldn't. Watching all the people I know I would have run faster than pass me felt S****. Walking was ok on it which seems strange. So kept walking to the finish. Once I stopped for a few minutes after the race I found it extremely sore to even walk then.

Was hoping to finish below 52 min at worst, 49 min would have been great....I probably would have come in 44-46 min if I had been able to run but finished in 52 min 24s. (10min 28s/mile). Live and learn-don't know how long this will take to heal :( Don't even know what caused it, it just came on :(

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,514 ✭✭✭✭Krusty_Clown

Could be an Achilles problem. Better take it handy until you know what the problem is/or it goes away. Unlucky with the race, but there'll be more races just around the corner, and you only have one ankle...two ankles. :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 506 ✭✭✭McConkey

Thanks Krusty for making me smile :) Had a bath, took nurofen-will ice it later. It seems to be the heel that's causing the problem (well when you take the running out of the equatiion :) ) There are a few nerves letting me know about it when I begin to walk on it.

I would normally be totally gutted and probably give up at this point but today, while I was disappointed, I know that this is a much longer task I have set myself and today was just a glitch.....I've read lots of injured peoples logs in here and they work at getting out there so I will too. Even though I couldn't run the last 3k I still only finished a small amount ouside my hoped for time. There will be more days :)

I can sit around and philosophise now since I can't run, also reading my Hal Higdon book which I got at last

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,144 ✭✭✭Bally8

Hey McConkey, Im so sorry to hear about your heel pain. I hope its nothing too serious. You have a great attitude about it - I was so annoyed when I got injured first but you have to keep positive and yes this is only a small glitch in your marathon story. We will both be there at the starting line come October:)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 506 ✭✭✭McConkey

    Thanks Bally8,
yeah, the heel is messed up, the nurofen did nothing :( I'm barely in pain until I put weight on it, then I can only limp, so its not great news. Don't really know what is wrong with it at all. The area at the back of the foot isn't sore which suggests, hopefully, that it's not the Achilies tendon.

I'm a bit pissed off but there's nothing I can do now I suppose except rest it for a few days. Damn and Blast etc. Was thinking of buying a road bike instead-might keep me on the straight and narrow till I'm able to run again-is that tax relief still available I wonder?

Was due to pick up my forerunner 50 tomorrow from the post sorting office and just got my Hal Higdon book yesterday (only 1999 edn though)....so I guess I'll be back. I'll keep posting in the log anyway so I don't loose touch :(

    Rest day

Well kids, the verdict is in, I am suffering from plantar fasciitis, some kind of inflammation of the area around the arch of the foot. I have a fallen arch on my right leg and also some inflammation of my Achilles tendon. The physio is also going to give me exercies for the left knee though not until I can weight bare on the right leg again.

Went to see the nurse this morning, who referred me to the doctor, who referred me to the physio. She did some ultrasound on it and stuff and it turns out I'll need orthotics. I've seen lots of people say that the orthotics are a hinderance so I'll have to see how that goes. Seemingly I over-pronate due in part to the fallen arch and the bio-mechanics are all off....I'm double jointed too just to top it all off! Man I don't do things by half.... If Carlsberg did running injuries and all that...

I thought I'd be more peed off to be honest but I'm kinda glad I know about all this stuff now so I can get it sorted. I often used to complain about a sore heal when wearing flat shoes-from years back (cheapy pump type shoes) and this is all part of the injury. I must be a bit p***ed off though cos I got my Forerunner today and I haven't even looked at it. :(

Took a look at some bikes today, might help with the exercise if I am more limited in what I can do for a while....I am talking to my boss about the bike to work scheme, will see how it goes.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 26,928 ✭✭✭✭rainbow kirby

Best that you're getting it sorted anyway. That bike to work scheme sounds good, I'd cycle to college if I wasn't so worried about falling off and smashing my laptop/head/etc.

Yeah Galway doesn't seem as bad for cycling as Dublin, although it's not great for cycle paths etc. It would be very handy for me to cycle up and down to work, as its a short distance but I still drive cos I don't get off till 9 and I need to eat after work so I like to get home as quickly as possible. I'll see if the boss is interested anyway.

My legs are painful but the painkillers aren't doing much for it. Will be icing and elevating for the next few days. Physio didn't say when I could run again...might try walking some of the miles for the challange if the limp goes away over the next few days. Seeing her again on Wed anyway. She couldn't do much work on it today cos it was w-a-y too tender.

The doctor said her husband was running in the same race yesterday and that the camber of the road was brutal and the worst road he'd ever run on (there was grass in the middle so you had to jump across the grass to the other side of the road to pass anybody). They had obviously just filled the potholes especially for the race, though without flattening out the shovel-loads of tar! but I'm not really complaining though, if I hadn't gotten hurt I probably wouldn't have mentioned those things about the road :)
