I agree that he has been living off the same joke for a long time, and I do continue to wonder what he's going to do different, but I think he's hilarious, and I loved his work experience project.

My OH forced me to go and see him. He was a painfully unfunny c*nt.

Thankfully there was a bar in the venue.

    I absolutely fvcking detest him.

Shit bag of the highest order.

I like him, if only for his portrayal of racist scumbag Waterford nightlife

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,716 ✭✭✭✭Earthhorse

Despite what other people have said in this thread I'm going to go against the grain and say yes, you are the only one to ever think that.

I don't find him funny but I find it easy as hell to not give a sh*t as I don't watch RTE.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 20,759 ✭✭✭✭dlofnep

I think he's harmless. Saw his standup show in Waterford, got a few chuckles out of him anyways.

Hmm... Maybe people dislike because he DOES point out traits and insecurities that Irish people try to ignore or pretend don't exist??

And he does do different things, and method comedy (if that term exists): Work experience in those low paid jobs, going to all those "disadvantaged" areas to get to know and work with the people that live there, moving to the Gaeltacht and learning to speak Irish.

I think he has a right to say what he wants and is probably one of the few comedians that actually KNOWS what he's talking about because he experienced it.

Or I guess he could just stand on stage airing his views on politics or black culture.. no comedian has EVER done that.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 11,631 ✭✭✭✭Hank Scorpio

    terrible terrible "comedian"

edit: Yes Jason Bourne or w/e his name is an infuriating uneducated douchebag

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,543 ✭✭✭JerryHandbag

Gotta say I really enjoyed his work experience show a few years back, but as a comedian....is he funny? Methinks no

Actually, you are right. The Jason Byrne dvd called "out of the box live" is possibly the worst comedy dvd I have EVER seen.
    I still don't like Bishops work though:pac:

In that respect ,I think he is actually quite a good social commentator but I agree that he is not all that funny. Don't hate him though.

he was funny for a while what with the novelty of someone from new yoik taking the piss out of us but the joke soon wore thin. he posts on boards doesnt he?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,956 ✭✭✭consultech

Nope, you're not the only one.

He's not just un-funny, he's an annoying and preachy **** factory.

I think the tipping point for me was "Jump around - as Gaeilge". Seriously.

Oh yeah, he's quite the philosopher. Jokes about the immersion really show us up for the fools we are.

Here's the thing: his entire act is based around a fish out of water scenario. He was coasting along for years being the "American unused to the Irish way of life" comedian until it started to get old hat. Stuck for new material (becuase he doesn't have any wit), he decides to throw himself into another situation unfamiliar to him: low paying employment. Now the jokes are about how difficult it some jobs are while talking about stupid customers, drunken or otherwise.

After this lil fad has passed, he starts to run out of ideas becuase he's back in the bosom of his lavish lifestyle. So what's the next novelty for our Des? Disadvantaged areas!

He works the angle of trying to give the kids a chance in life (because they need comedy tips, not jobs or anything) and still pretends to be ignorant of everything for the sake of a few jokes at their expense which is supposed to be cutting-edge observational humour.

The same thing when he stayed in "the Gaeltacht," (just a few miles from where I live funnily enough. That's the only funny thing I'll ever associate with Bishop) only this time he actually reaches lower levels of hackery. FFS anyone can go anywhere and point out that languages are different, that's not comedy. That's nothing.

Now, those three programmes show a calculating aspect of Bishop I can't stand: he endears himself to the audience by patronising them ("OMG, I never knew how hard you guys have it") while savagely making fun of them in the process. He is a hack of the highest order, and one that knows exactly what he's doing. I wouldn't be surprised if he thought his audience are complete idiots for lapping this up, because they are. Des Bishop is a cancer on comedy.

I'll admit that Work Experiencs and some episodes of Joy in the Hood were quite good, but as a stand up I don't find the guy remotely funny in any way shape or form.

Couldn't agree more, saw Tiernan live and would have walked out except the g/f would have killed me. Give me Bill Bailey (or to a lesser extent Dylan Moran) any day.

Both are one and the same to be honest, pretty low on the comedy food chain. Tiernan learned that when he got analised in America.

Of all the topics you could have picked for an AH thread, this is certainly one in which you weren't going to be alone in.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,177 ✭✭✭DenMan

Being honest I never got into him at all, and what I saw didn't like. Dermot Morgan was a real and funny comedian. That was real.....Bishop doesn't even come close.

In the beginning I though he was smart arse Journo of the kind the Sindo inflict on the world occassionally. The funniest thing about him I ever found was when I discovered he was supposed to be a comedian.

Also need to add, he moved to Ireland in 1990, yet he still acts like a tourist that stepped off the plane last week.

You'd think he'd be used to Ireland by now.
