I agree they are probably not the most tasteful type of mags but what's the harm really? I never understood what seems to be wrong with nudity anyway. I mean some girl with having her nipples barely covered is hardly very explicit right?

13 year old school girls have pubic areas too, and know what they are for. A lot will have had their periods by then. It sounds like you want to try and preserve childrens' innocence and that seems to me to be a battle you can't win.

Perhaps not if great aunt Margeret is over from London...
But honestly if I had a 13 year old kid who had a couple of soft core 'ladz magz' as they are called I wouldn't worry. Better to let them explore their sexuality through this safe means than try and suppress it which leads to bigger problems IMO.

Not necessarily. But by that age she *should* be educated on sexual matters so she can tell the difference between crass behavior and proper sexual conduct.

If I did have a child or had a mag like that lying around I'd be more concerned what that would tell her about me rather what damage that may do to her. I could never figure out why people think that finding out about nudity and sexuality is actually damaging children and teenagers. And yet nobody seems concerned that 9 year old kids learn about other facts of life like people killing each other in wars and stuff.

Agreed - there seems to be an attitude that breasts should only exist for sexual fulfillment and entertainment.

While i don't like a lot of what those types of magazines represent, I would support them being openly on sale. At least they are blatant about what they are selling, the ads on telly for cosmetics, etc with the air brushed beauties are a lot more insidious imho.

If i ever have children i'll spend a lot of time talking with them about how the media portray the human body, relationships and how sex is used to sell us things. I'd try and prepare them for what is an adult world - we can't put the genie back in the bottle and santitise everything in case a child may see it, while I think childhood is a special time, and do honestly like children, i resent attempts to curtail the lifestyle of myself and other adults.

I wouldn't possibly know. But wouldn't it be better for schoolgirls in the long run to not hide sex from them, and treat it as something dirty and wrong, like it was for so long in this country? Wouldn't it be better to acknowledge their baby making abilities and teach them about it, rather than making sex mysterious and unknown, which leads to teenage pregnancies? Wouldn't it be better to give them the chance to realise being "nude and rude" isn't the height of desireability, which is one impression a teenager can get-"something is so good it has to be kept behind the counter,I want it!" Just some things to think about.

No I wouldn't but you have to admit that isn't quite the same.
And although I wouldn't actively make such stuff available or even suggest this or anything I wouldn't go totally ballistic if I found out that my pubertal kid (if I had one) got hold of one herself.
It's quite natural that kids at that age start to get interested in sexuality. I mean that's what we did at that age and we didn't think we were doing something horribly wrong. The main reason why we found it all so exciting (apart form the obviously exciting facts about it) was us knowing that we weren't supposed to have it.

Who cares? Really, why do people consider it damaging for kids to know what naked bodies look like? Attitudes like this are why people get stuck in missionary style for life and have to take showers every time they fornicate to wash the sin off.

Its part of a holistic attitude to sex. You couldn't possibly be saying yes to sex education, but keep sex away from their poor naiive eyes? I see the distinction, but you don't seem to see that these girls would and are capable of looking at the situation critically if you give them the tools to do so-sex education.

Oh the tried and tested 'what next' argument - can be used to suggest anything without actually backing things up.
"Oh you let your son read soft core noodie mags, what's next? Watching hard core porno movies??! And after that, what's next? Raping people for sport????!"
On the contrary someone could argue, "So you don't want 13 year old schoolgirls seeing topless women on magazine covers... What's next, making hem take pills to suppress physical sexual development?????!"
As outlined arguments such as 'what next?' or 'where do we draw the line?' ad little if anything to the discussion so I would advise to refrain from using them.
Sorry for the tangent but that style of arguing really irritates me.

Now to my proper point:
If one teaches their kids about sexuality properly (which involves the distinction between the reality of proper sexual relations and the OTT stuff you see in the media including but not limited to lads mags, porno movies, make up ads etc.) there should in theory be little to worry about since the kids can make informed and educated decisions based on the evidence given.

While the magazines tend to be idiot-fests (Theres as much 'Man eats his own head and cycles to work' kind of freakshow stuff in them as naked ladies) they sell very well. The only thing I can see in their defence is that ultimately the main problem with pornography online, where it is most common (Duh) is that theres a huge class issue that is too often forgotten.

'Why would any woman do that?'

Well, for any number of reasons.

*To feed her kids
*To pay her rent
*To go to college
or worst of all, she could be forced into it.

There's a reason the vast amount of the stuff comes from poorer countries.

If some idiot off Coronation Street or The Bill wants to strip for a lads mag, thats in a different ballpark altogether. Is it offensive to women, I really don't know? I still think it should be topshelf/behind the desk stuff, as I don't think its healthy for 15/16 year old lads to grow up with the idea 'tits' are something that come with a side order of football, freakshow stories and an interview with Ricky Gervais.

Its not my cup of tea at all at all, mainly because the women in it are not exactly my cup of tea either, and I disagree with funding tabloidish press at all. Its not a good thing for young lads to grow up seeing as a natural progression from the Beano (!!) and I know for a fact it was floating around lunch tables when I was in secondary (all eh....7 months ago :rolleyes: ) and that can't have a good effect on how young 'uns see themselves either.

If your bloke IS reading Nuts or the sort, to be honest its a good round of Scrabble, or a bit of the History Channel he needs, or something stimulating...its everything BAR the women you should be most scared of.

I think its more important people go after the filth making a quick buck of working class women in third world countries and the sort online, leave the idiots to glossy C-list Celeb wankmags....

Tricky one. And a good question too.

I guess why I wouldn't advocate it is 'cos (almost all) pornography shows a very distorted picture of sexuality to say the least. And I guess to a certain extent you could say that about your mag cover with the three girls touching/hugging each other or whatever. But it's still pretty harmless.

A random guess at cigarettes, chocolate, crisps, newspapers with news of murders/crime on the front page also on sale. Why restrict censorship to just magazines? And just to shops beside schools. How far away from schools is 'safe'?

Seriously OP, having looked at both of the covers, I really don't think they are that bad and 13 year olds know more about the facts of life than their parents nowadays. I really can't see how any 13 year old girl would be in any way traumitized or offended by either of those covers

Apologies in that case I thought school calenders were standardised now but while I see where you are coming from I really dont see much difference between whats in Nuts etc and teenager magazines. Most young girls feel the same way as us adults.....they dont look at those pictures and think 'wow...I want to be on a magazine cover with my hand on another womans pubic area' ...they see publicity hungry young women who are looking for five minutes of fame by taking their clothes off in public. I wouldn't underestimate young girls

Honestly, were i to be concerned it would be for young boys not knowing that there was more to sexuality than these magazines - from my own memories of being that age girls were more clued in about the media, talked more amongst themselves and honestly were i to have seen those covers with my friends at the age of 13 we'd have laughed at the baby oil that seems to be covering the women on the loaded cover, speculated about how much air brushing happened, roll our eyes at the idiotic stories being head lined on the cover, and maybe had a discussion about how the woman on the right had nice looking hair.

not sure if this is just because I'm not Irish and have had a different upbringing, ie never went to mass etc etc... but anyways it doesn't bother me in the slightest, I just don't think its a big deal. I remember in school part of my sex education was to watch porn, again not a big deal, none of our parents minded it either....

Better it be normal and not have a huge to-do made about it than give kids (who are definitely going to be clued in at that age already) the idea that nudity and sex are bad and wrong and they should be ashamed of their bodies. And treating teenagers like naive and innocent idiots is pointless.

really, I think you need to find something better to do than obsessing over magazines that nobody else is going to look twice at

well I'd like to agree with you but i seriously think that there's a big difference between Swedes and Irish peoples view on sex, like whats ok and whats not ok to talk about. And I'm not saying that Swedes are 'mad for it' or anything like it I'm just saying that i think we are more open and less shy to talk about sex and we are not as embarrassed about it.
