    What planet are you on?

Show me which supermarket has them for £3:

    http://www.sainsburys.com/groceries/index.jsp?bmUID=1232530877795

Nothing for 3 quid but as a random example...take gillette sensor excel (which I use).

Tesco Ireland: 5 pack for €9.82
Sainsburys UK: 10 pack for £7.33

    hmmmm....

The €15 shaving brush I got from that 4men.ie site wasn't the best at generating a lather so I ordered the €45 one to replace it. Wouldn't recommend the cheaper one.

Apparently the reason is they are the most stolen item in the shops so this drives up costs, funny how the UK don't seem to suffer from this

And Tesco can't use this excuse with all the security they have on them.
It's incredible the prices they charge!

Nah - want a synthetic one - am vegetarian so rubbing an animals hairs in my face every other day would just "go against the grain" (geddit??!)
Besides that - the shave tutor vids on youtube seemed to intimate that the synthetics were the best of both worlds between badger and (what was the other one? Ox or something?)

Fair enough. Though you should know that the badgers are culled and are considered a nuisance as they destroy local crops, if that makes any difference.

Another thing you could try is brushless shaving cream. Art of Shaving do one as do many others.

Yeah I know but it's an animal all the same. I'm not a through and through militant about it - some things just don't function properly if they are not leather for example I haven't found a belt yet that doesn't break/tear if it's not leather, but I try where I can if you know what I mean..

Plus, I already spent the €45! :D Just wanted to warn others that it might be a false economy getting the cheaper one instead of the one that cost extra. I'll post back and let ye know if it's worth the extra sponds...

I tried my new €45 brush last night and the difference is unbelievable! A rich creamy lather that helped me get fewer nicks and was much easier tomake than with the cheaper brush. Certainly as far as synthetic brushes go, forget about the cheaper ones on 4men.ie and go for the more expensive. Much better results in the long run.

I just registered to respond to this post.

Badgers are not farmed in China. Wild Badgers are hunted for their pelt & their meat is used as a by-product. Any seller or manufacturer who says otherwise has been misinformed.

    Best regards,

So for those of you who have started to use these razors/blades, whats the consensus? Are they as good/better than the cartridge razors, and will they work out cheaper in your opinion?

Personally; I enjoy shaving more, I have to shave more often cos the blades destroy me if I allow too much growth - but that's ok. I am only on my second blade and it's still working and will for another week I'd say (shaving every 2nd day). So far I am getting a kind of 5 O'Clock shadow on my chin where it's not getting close enough but I am on the 1st of the recommended blades (the dullest I presume) and at notch 4 on the Futur. I presume as I become more skilled and progress to sharper blades that will change.
A great experience and I am really glad I bought the safety razor! :)

And yes IMO they are better, no hysteresis which led to ingrown hair and bumps and it's much much cheaper.

I use a slant bar and feather blades and it never matters how long my stubble/beard is as it just glides through it.

Yep, take your time because you will learn now which will help you when you get to the feathers.

Coming up on two weeks of usage with a safety razor, some trial and error at first but the shave is certainly alot closer then a normal fusion or mach3 razor and with alot less razor burn.

I see shaving as less of a job and more enjoyable, my 5 o'clock shadow now shows up at about 1am :p
Althought I'm not 100% sure yet I'm having alot less issues with my skin, I used to get spots now and then and none so far at all...something I'm keeping to monitor

Thinking of heading down this route myself. Would the consensus be that a Merkur Progress and a blade 'selection pack' would be the best start for a safety razor virgin?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,789 ✭✭✭Caoimhín

I have always suspected that they are very expensive because the companies have huge advertising expenses. Hiring Beckham, Henry Woods et al to do an advert must cost a bloody fortune.

On that note, does anyone know where i could bug a good cutthroat razor? Im off in a few months to a place where i dont think i will be able to buy those expensive blades..

Correct, along with a brush and some cream (or soap)

Safety razor blades are cheap and can cost as little as 10c each. Having said that www.theinvisibleedge.co.uk specialises in straight razors.

I would assume thats an 8 pack of blades?
    Where is the offer?

I've got three Fusion blades right now and the way things are with the new safety razor I'll have those same 3 blades this time next year.

In addition to this its cost me less then 10e to buy 60 blades for my new razor :)

I can't recall how many blades - the mad part was the fact that any pack could be nearly 40 quid. Im not familiar with the fusion blades though.
