What's open on Christmas day?

I am spending Christmas alone and I am trying to figure out what to do with myself. Last year, I spent the day inside watching TV... I can't do that this year as I've no cable. I guess I could watch crap online and download some stuff to watch but I'd rather get out and about.

    So...

What's open on Christmas day? Internet cafes, pubs, restaurants, anything... what's open?

Also any lonely hearts events will be a welcome suggestion as I broke with my girlfriend a couple of weeks ago...

I'd take an AA meeting at this point! They're always good entertainment! :D

    Petrol Stations
    Hospitals
    Garda Stations

I recommend buying yourself a box set of a certain tv series and spend your day watching that (ah heaven!:)). I also recommend buying yourself a chinese on xmas eve and heating it up on christmas day, get a few beers, some munchies and most importantly, some porn for bedtime.

What about hostels? There has got to be some homesick foreign girls in need of a cuddle, or a letch :D

Yeah, see that's the easy answer... got to be something else going on. Maybe we could hear from some people who have to work on Christmas day and what they're doing.

Have you thought about maybe volunteering somewhere? A friend of mine is volunteering in the RDS helping with a Christmas dinner thing for the homeless.

I really do not think that there will be much open. Maybe some restaurants in town who's owners don't celebrate Christmas?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 58 ✭✭ITMissy

Some restaurants do open and serve xmas dinner if you fancy that

Christmas, or capitalist spending festival, aka, materialism overload day or in other circles, merry festival of buying, selling and being loud, is overall, a lame day, with some ok stuff leading upto it, and some ok stuff after it.

    My suggestion;

Buy some sleeping pills and bypass the whole miserable 24 hours.

Also afaik hotels are open, and their bars*

    *maybe

Not really into the idea of being harassed by skangers at Christmas... I get that most days of the year.

Well it was just as probable that you worked in a bar or something...

Sucks, you have family you want to be with and can't until later in the day. I actually asked to work Christmas.:(

    No, I don't wonder... I know.

As much as I enjoy the idea of helping needy people over Christmas, we all know what kind of people will be there.

Thanks for suggesting I am a bad person though.

About 10% genuinely needy people and the rest will be rude, loud, brash skangers or alcoholics asking you for money. that'll go on drink. I really don't feel like being abused on Christmas and neither do you.

I'd be up for doing something similar for mentally ill people or volunteering in a hospital, maybe. I'd like to help really needy people; not wasters.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 178 ✭✭sprinklesspanky

I've had a few invitations for Christmas... looking for something to do beyond the normal eat and watch TV thing.

I'd like to go out, and do something. Staying in is easy.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 937 ✭✭✭Kevski

What exactly do you mean by "staying in is easy"?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 11,221 ✭✭✭✭m5ex9oqjawdg2i

    Yore ma

Old and boring... It's just not funny anymore.
Not really into the idea of being harassed by skangers at Christmas... I get that most days of the year.

Nice... so all homeless people are skangers, they are all on heroin and have aids, they are also all rapists, theives and murderers... I think we should lock them all up, better yet, lets just kill them all, yea? Next time you post something negative about the homeless remember the homeless man who saved that busdriver when his bus went into the liffey a few years ago. Real skanger for saving that mans life...

I was going to recommend something, but I don't think you are worth it now...

    *EDIT*

OP, stop plucking figures our of thin air. 10% are needy while the rest are wasters? Sure thing... you should work with these people before you pass judgement. You don't know anything in this area...

Jesus,at first i felt sorry for you but you've got invitations. What more do you want? There is nowhere to go out on Xmas day unless you want to go begging with those homeless people skangers who genuinely don't have anyone to go to.

    I am spending Christmas alone........

Then why do you want people to suggest ideas for doing stuff? What's the problem like? Also you've had invitations but you don't want to spend the day in such a way so tis your own fault. Are you like this every other day of the year? Or are you just attempting to rebel?

If you are near Dun Laoghaire... Alex's newsagents is always open on christmas day. I know he sold the business a while back, so not sure if the newbies share that opinion...

Head down to Sandycove to watch brave ones jump into the sea. We generally drive past and see how they are doing every year :)

Go for a swim on XMas morning at Dun Laoighre (Prob more places in Dublin doing it too). I'm doing it in Galway and it's gonna be savage craic, the place will be packed (Loads of people turn up for the event/support etc)

You never know, you may spark up a convo with person/people in the same situation as you and end up having a party :D

-Edit- Think it's been said, but why not go to a homeless shelter? Just ring them up and offer to volunteer serving food/whatever for the afternoon. You'll have a chat with less fortunate people, hear some stories etc... can't be a bad thing. May even open your mind a little, eventhough you're alone this XMas, you'll have so much more than the people around you

You honestly think a skanger is going to jump into the sea on XMas day in only shorts in order to raise money for charity? LOL! Sure the skangers only have their showers swim during the summer :pac:
