Would you consider a Saab 9-3 - you'd get this down to €16K.

even @ 16k, its not worth it. Trouble.

Good good, the state of that, look at the interior! I'd sooner drive a donkey.
    I concur and LOL

And for the person suggesting a 06 Golf....here's a 08....and cash price/limited availability my hole, he's flooded with them

And not a dealer known for good deals, though well able to dole out depreciative prices to people he knew wouldn't go elsewhere in the good times.

How about a Mazda 3 Saloon

OP seems like a bit of a prick with this lack of feedback. No idea who we are recommending stuff for.

To those who are saying Golfs? What the hell is wrong with you people?! When you have €16k to spend why would you buy something as dull, common and underpowered as that?

Id go for a pristine low mileage Alfa 156 GTA in from the UK myself. Possibly a c43 as well. I like a bit of rarity in my cars.

All that said, i am driving a dull as ditchwater 2001 silver s40 at the moment. As rare and exciting a car as you can buy :p

sorry for lack of replying, just been very busy with xmas and that..
He is viewing a 9-3 aero, the 210bhp version today..

Failing that i think he will probably go for a 3 series coupe

Trouble with turbo'd versions, electrical problems, water ingress....and it'll be worth half nothing soon, even worse than it is now.
A money pit to be avoided.

Golf's are not cool though, esp the 1.4, the interior is a joke, and you know its a base golf when the first things mentioned on the ad are "CD Player, Multiple Airbags, Rear Head Rests, Rear Wiper, Remote Central Locking, Immobiliser".

thankfully those 07 golfs onwards were given the luxury of aircon, previous models had to pay €500 for that button.

I like the 9-3 Aero myself. As the OP (and myself) do very little miles, price nor reliability shouldn't be an issue
EDIT: assuming of course it has a FSSH

You'll loose your balls on a BMW or Saab on resale. My uncle had a 525, his wife had a Saab 9-3 convertible. They tried to sell both cars for over 6 months with no interest on either of them and ended up selling them for over 5k below the cheapest advertised on Carzone.

absolutely true, but for a €16k car, even if you only got 5-6k for it in 3 years time, its about 3.5k pa depreciation on a performance car.
