€16000 car

a friend of mine has asked for help on looking for a new used car.
hes got €16g max. to spend on something "cool".
Any suggestions?

How old is he - will insurance be a problem? Does he prefer hot hatches, coupes, sporty saloons etc? Does he have a big commute - i.e. are running costs an issue?

Need to narrow it down a little.

What is your friend's definition of "cool"?

In other words for example I would not consider a Golf Sportline or A4 cool but your friend might so we need to know what he/she likes from a car.

Maybe a little harsh but golf drivers need to get out there and drive something else to realise that they are not very good at all specially in 1.6 petrol.

i would go for a Mazda RX-8 myself. i think they look savage and also come highly rated by Top Gear, if that holds any bearing with ya.

Tell him to find out what his friends think is cool and get that. Different people have wildly varying ideas about what cars are cool, the main thing for him is presumably that his peer group be impressed.

07/08 Fiat Bravo T Jet.

Rocket fast 150bhp engine, only 1.4, low road tax, 3 or 4 year warranty, 0-60sub 9secs, class looking car too with good mpg and it will be like new with sub 15k miles ( no better feeling ).

You can get a 07 one here for about 16k now, but dont buy here.Wait and get a 08 one early next year in the UK.

You'd get a 08 in the uk early next year for 13 or 14k including Vrt.Fiat give 5 year warranties with all Bravo's I think, so by the time your mate is sick of it, it will still be under warranty.

Anything "cool" runs on petrol for a start, not a bone shaking, clattering, rattling, noisy, sluggish, polluting paraffin stove(that's a diesel for those who don't know).

There are so many choices.

Once it's petrol though, you've already started going in the right direction.

2 doors helps as well:)!

You might just get this in for around 16K. Its rare, very fast and looks the part. Not the most comfortable(though the turbos are much better than the n/a) but a car I would always consider in the future when insurance would be affordable. Fantastic machine.

ok to help a little..
hes 26, doesnt have big commute to work, has said no to tt, or golf..
preferably wants a good spec'd interior, engine size isnt really high on his list..as in i wouldnt consider him a petrol head..

Maybe the three series coupe then - available in a decent range of engine sizes. The interior isn't exactly luxurious, but a nice place to be with either leather or alcantara seats.

Hadn't realised they were going that cheap - and that place is generally comparatively pricey too.
