In at least two out of the three of those, it can't possibly impact on you so who cares who they support?

it's just annoying because i honestly feel these people look down at you if you support connacht rugby or your local eircom league team/west ham/celtic/ whoever outside big 4 teams ..... as for the politics - i swear they vote for whoever they feel will get into government, not on their own beliefs or candidates quality. It's just something i've noticed thats becoming very prevalent in irish culture - a fear of standing out from the crowd as such - rant over :D

There will always be bandwagon jumping gobsh***s! Every successful team has them and truth be told the real fans find them cringeworthy!

To support United is too easy. It's convenience supporting. It makes life too easy. There is no challenge. It is a cowardly form of escapism, a sell-out to the forces of evil.

Depends on when you started supporting them. Most liverpool fans for example are bandwagon jumpers because they started supporting them in their glory years.

Does anyone remember when Blackburn won the league, there was loads of idiots jumping on their bandwagon and now you don't see any of these moron's around, probably jumped ship to another bandwagon team like Newcastle or Sunderland. I hate Sunderland fans supporting them because of Roy Keane, what will they do now.

joyce, i think i know who you are. you claim you want people to support local teams etc etc.

how many galway united games did you go to this season? admittedly io only went to the final home match of season but still 1 is better than none.

i also think you're the same guy who wouldnt go see the galway senior football final (with one of your closest friends playing) because it cost too much to get in. 10 euro was not too much surely. but your main reason was that you were too hungover.

not one connacht match this season, you've been at.

    pot kettle black........i think

Again, supporting Sunderland because Roy Keane is there is a valid reason to support Sunderland. People like what appeals to them and what they are into at the moment. Big f##king deal if you support Newcastle one season and Sunderland the next.

    Mick was a legend!!!!

I was a season ticket holder for Sunderland for the last few years before I went to Oz (way before Keane came on the scene). Was a fan since I lived there in the 90s.

But suddenly Roy is the manager, and all these boggers would be on the plane over ever week. Big Cork heads on them. They'd be distraught on the way home if we lost, like they'd been fans all their lives.

I'll be really interested if they're still all going to games when I'm back home next year.

Had one of those myself got it back when they were selling them off for a fiver in the sports shops, I have burned it since. Anyway in short, Irish people like being part of the winning team, being the popular one and being able to slag other people because they didn´t win anything, we have a craving to latch onto any bandwagon going.

Congratulations on being such a great Sunderland fan. I really mean it. But why moan about new fans who became interested in the club because of Roy Keane being manager? Something has to spark a persons interest. So what if they no longer support them now that Keane is gone? Such is life, people move on, do new things, god forbid, support a new club. Supporting a new football isn't like raising kids, it's not a life long commitment, it's just a bit of fun for most, whilst it may a religion for a few.

I don´t think you can really refer to people like that as supporters, they would be more spectators with a slight bias.

I was more complaining about being surrounded by Cork accents!

And the fact that they get so emotional about the results of a team they've only just heard of.

I actually thought the Irelandisation of Sunderland was a good thing, as it became much easier to get jerseys at home :D

So is this what it means to be a supporter? Is he a fan of Roy Keane's or Sunderland? Is he any less of a supporter if he was to support Roy Keane's new club should he return to management? What are the rules when supporting two clubs? Is it ok to support a team in Italy and in England? Can you support two teams in England? What do you do if you like how both Arsenal and Man Utd play? Can you claim to support both, or do you need to hide your like of one of them to conform to the norm of supporting one club for life? What happens if that club starts to play crap football which you do not like? What if they up prices so that you cannot afford a ticket? What if they buy players who are **** and only care about their hair cuts and wages? What happened to wimbledon supporters? Are they forbidden from supporting another team?

If you can change teams when the going gets tough, whats the point? Dont try to hide the fact you love hopping on and off at any available opportunity, supporting means your on for life. If you weren't a bandwagoner you would understand.

He's a Keane supporter as there is no club emblem attached to the tattoo.
Is he any less of a supporter if he was to support Roy Keane's new club should he return to management?

He's still a Keane supporter. I fail to see your point.
What are the rules when supporting two clubs? Is it ok to support a team in Italy and in England?

    Yep
Can you support two teams in England?

No. You can like a second team but supporting is an entirely different thing.
What do you do if you like how both Arsenal and Man Utd play?

Then you're a football supporter, not a United or Arsenal fan.
Can you claim to support both, or do you need to hide your like of one of them to conform to the norm of supporting one club for life?

You can like both, just not support them. Can you not see the difference yet?
What happens if that club starts to play crap football which you do not like?

Then you keep supporting them til they come good again. Fair weather fans are scum imo.
What if they up prices so that you cannot afford a ticket?

Then go support a League of Ireland. But if you like United and Arsenal you probably won't do that.
What if they buy players who are **** and only care about their hair cuts and wages?

No player is bigger than the club.
What happened to wimbledon supporters? Are they forbidden from supporting another team?

Some support AFC Wimbledon, some support MK Dons.

    I support Celtic because I'm a patriot.

I support Man United because they win things and they have that Ronaldo fella. Although I like City since they got the midget Brazil fella with the gloves.

I look out for all the Irish playing in England too.

I don't like the League Of Ireland, because they don't win things, and it must be so cold standing there watching the game with no action replays. And the LOI fans say bad things about us 'born and bred' Irish football fans that have supported Chelsea Liverpool Arsenal Newcastle Blackburn Sunderland Leeds Manchester United through thick and thin.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,255 ✭✭✭anonymous_joe

Man United, Leinster and Labour for me. 1 out of 3 ain't bad. :pac:

In fairness I started supporting United in 94/95. Knew a fair few Blackburn supporters back then. ;)

And yeah, most Pool fans are about say... 5 or more years older. Which seems to coincide with their dominance. And yeah, supporting United is easy, but so's supporting Pool Chelsea or Arsenal. At the time I identified most with United because they had Irish players and Cantona. I'd say a lot of youngsters would;ve started supporting Sunderland what with all the Irish players and the Irish managers. It's sad that it's easier to identify with an English team than you're local team but ah well.

i really don't have a problem with who people support as long as they have some idea of the history etc of the club/ country/ sport that they are following. nothing annoys me more than football fans of all clubs, particularly the fans of premier league top 4, who think football only started when sky came along.

Yes, it is so easy. Especially living in Ireland. Sure E500 for a match ticket and a 3star hotel is an absolute baragain. With flights and spending money on top if that, sure what is 1k to go watch 90 minutes of football. So easy.

So you need a club emblem tatoo to be a supporter of the club?

You asked a question based on that photo. I answered on the evidence before me. Do you know the guy personally to know whether his allegences lie with a club or Keane? If not then you a are purely speculating, the same as myself.
If it ok to support a team in Italy and a team in England, then why not two teams in England?

Because a rivalry between two Premiership teams is far greater than that between two clubs that may meet on the off chance every 5 years.

By all means support Arsenal and Altrincham.
Ok I see, a football supporter, but not a supporter of the teams that play. I see. makes sense.

It makes perfect sense. You cannot support United and Arsenal equally, especially when they are playing each other.

If you claim you do then you aren't a fan because a fan always wants their team to win.
Sorry, didn't get that far in the rule book.

You asked a question. I'm sorry if you don't like the answer.
Ya, who wants to see good football anyway.

I support City but still watch good football outside of us. I don't need to be an Arsenal fan to watch and appreciate them.

Massive difference between a football fan and a person who will whore themselves out to whatever club is doing the best. These fickle people are nothing more than glory hunters and would be generally frowned upon. Pose the question in the soccer forum if you want.
But which league of Ireland? How many leagues of Ireland are there? This is so confusing! I can support no more than one club but I can support an entire league of clubs? Ok, I'm slowly getting it. I wouldn't never have thought there would be so many rules!

Emmmm there is only one League of Ireland, hence my use of capitals in the name. It refers to an official title bestowed on the league by the FAI.
Leeds United? Ronaldo at Man United? Yes, currently he is bigger than the club. How often have you seen Fergie put up with a man who subs himself and has called Madrid a bigger club?

What player was bigger than Leeds United?

Ronaldo is not bigger than United. Everyone, including Fergie knows that. If he was so much hassle he would be out the door. The fact is Ronaldo has said this week he is more than happy to be at United. Why would Fergie argue with that?

And do some support other clubs? Or are 100% supporting just these two?

I can't say that they do, same as you can't say that they don't.

I do know that the diehard proper fans are AFC Wimbledon fans.

2/3 for me at the moment.

1 because thats who my dad and his dad would have followed for years, mainly for the same reasons I enjoy supporting them now. Entertaining attacking style of play.

2 because they are my local team. And are amazingly entertaining to watch.

3 Will vary I'm sure, depending on policies, but not a fan at the moment.

You can work out which is which ;)

It just a populist way of following sport that illustrates how everyone in this country wants to fit in.
