    Yup, I've frequented both.

Mrs Dees is out in Mount Oval, by Rochestown. Only alcohol served is wine. Their steaks are cooked perfectly, I usually go for a rare fillet or t-bone. I've only had better steaks in the Bayview out by Ballycotton or at The Boardwalk. Atmosphere is quiet, and the only problem I really have with the place is that I have to drive out so I'm limited to the 1 glass of wine and the guy playing piano can play a bit too loud. Both of the places are pricey, but this place has an edge on The Boardwalk price wise.

The Boardwalk is next to the Clarion Hotel, across the river from City Hall. It's very pricey and very busy. The atmosphere in there is brilliant, piano is played in the background at the perfect volume. The decor is brilliant. Service is excellent, quick and very polite. I was there last week with, Calamari for starters, T-bone for main course, which comes with a selection of veg and chips, and for desert, chocolate cake & coffee. The price for two including wine came to over €100 though, which is quite pricey considering my other half is a veggie and her meal only made up about 1/3 of the bill. If you're looking for a perfect meal you can't really go wrong here, unless you're worried about your €€. The steak here is fantastic, loads of options, good cuts and cooked perfectly. If you're like me and very particular about a well cooked rare steak this is the place for you.

    Great reviews :)
Must check the boardwalk out - it only opened recently??...

Cant say i agree with the review on Mrs Dees - I thought it was very poor.

Jacobs on the mall do a good steak. A bit pricey though

Can't speak for myself here, but friend in the Boardwalk last week, and is still raving about the steak - said the food was the best tasted in ages, and they eat out regularly. Might try it myself soon too

A few friends of a friend went to the Boardwalk (beside the Clarion?) and refused to pay it was so bad. The pints are supposedly like soap. It's Neil Prenderville's restaurant? He is an asshole to boot. I hope the place dies a death. Also, not only do you have a high opinion of the boardwalk Tazzie, your plugging it as if your life depends on it.

I have never been to Mrs. Dee's steakhouse, I have never even heard of it in fact.

    Aside from those two:

    Luigi Malones has nice steaks.
The Liberty Grill has great steaks.
    Cafe Mexicana has great steaks.
    Hardwood has great steaks.

    Agreed.

I have never been to Mrs. Dee's steakhouse, I have never even heard of it in fact.

It's attached to the Mount Oval bar and is usually quite good

I'd be slow to go to The Boardwalk.

Decent steak in SoHo on the hot plate yoke.

I was in the Uptown Grill (45 MacCurtain Street) during the Jazz Weekend, popped in for a quick bite between Jazz Sessions - and I had the best T-Bone Steak I've had in years in there - served with fried onions/mushrooms and chips. It was scrummy.

I agree Mint Restaurant do a lovely one, with Pepper Sauce or Garlic Butter. I've heard so many mixed reviews about The Boardwalk - not sure I even want to enter the premises. Also, the Early Bird at Greens or The Imperial, not a bad steak!

Now I feel hungry - thank you! J

I agree with The Boardwalk (assuming you are not bothered about cost). I've eaten dinner there a few times, and only once was my steak not cooked to perfection. Only thing I'd say is it seems to be a 45 EUR a head set menu for Christmas right now, and it was off this menu that I got my one sub-par steak. And the service ended up being a bit wacky on that occasion, but I put this down to the time of year - ordinarily the service is very good.

If you're having a steak make sure you order a side of the crispy onions - they are amazing.

Jacobs on the South Mall is also good.

I agree with this, I was there a few times and the last time it was very poor, quality seems to have dropped and the service was not spot on. They made plenty of mistakes with the order etc and the place wasn't even busy.
Way too expensive for what you get (even if it is in 'Mount Oval')

Gambienis on Carey's Lane does a superb fillet.

The Hawthorne bar and restaurant on the Lough is beautiful - went there a few weeks back for mums bday and she had a sirloin steak - said it was to die for - mine wasn't too bad either! Nice atmosphere and nice view of the Lough if you get a window seat::)

Best steak I've had in Cork so far is in The East Village out in Douglas, was fantastic!

    Steak:
Boardwalk is pretty good.... especially if Size matters :pac: :pac:

Those hot plate steaks you can get in Soho and East Villiage are great. Soak the hot plate in garlic butter and cook the steak in small strips. Very very tasty.

Ms Dees is pretty good. I've been there a few times and never had a complaint. Wouldn't rate it with the above though.

Now, if you truly want the steak effect. Have you heard of the The Thady???
It's out in Farren. An experience I'll tell you that.
Old mans pub in the countryside.
    Menu: Steak and Chips.
    That is all :D

Oh, you can order a fish if you book 3 days in advance :D:D

Seriously though, great steak for good price and atmosphere.

I've heard high praise of the Bosun. Haven't been there myself though. It's not hard to do a good steak once you have the meat though. a minute on each side making sure it's nice and bloody in the middle, half an onion fried and sliced on top, a lump of garlic butter and a huge stack of chips... Man I should get some lunch, been discussing food for the last hour.

I have had the steak there quite a number of times & I agree, it is good. I normally add a portion of Spanish fries. These can be hit & miss, most of the time they are fine though.
I went through a phase of getting the Hot Rock which is also nice but a couple of friends recently commented "if they wanted to cook their dinner they'd have stayed at home". I still like the idea of cooking the meat myself though.

My favourite place for a steak would be................ Luigi Malones too.

No opinion on the boardwalk as i have not been there yet. I am not very fussy when it comes to steaks to be honest. As long as they are lean and cooked properly, I am usually happy (apart from the odd manky pepper sauce i have encountered). I have to plug for the liberty grill. It ain't a specialist steak house with 11 different types of steak but their steak is feckin yummy and the chips that go with it are double feckin yummy.

    yummy

Hardwood is also very good - had a rib eye steak there about 4 or 5 months ago and it was particularly good. Plus one of my favourite bars in the city is right next door to it - the bierhaus

The Thady steak is your only man.. but yeah, thats pretty much the menu.. Steak and chips or salad plate. I keep asking for muchrooms but no. you even have to order a side of onions. but very yummy.

    Cork Golf Club.

Must be one of the best around, and not that expensive. Think you might have to play a round first though

Might be a bit far out for you (prob 20km) but The wild goose steakhouse just off the main Mallow road is the best I've ever had in Cork.

Also the newly refurbished bunny connellans in myrtleville is definitely worth a visit during the summer good view, drink and steaks.

Have to recommend Scotts for a steak at the moment. €20 for fillet, very tasty, and comes with nice chips and onion rings.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 148 ✭✭CaptainPendulum

    Cork Golf Club!

The best steak you'll ever have is in a place called Willie Pa's on the Drimolegue to Bantry road. A bit of a trek I know but SOOOOO worth it!!:D

Here's some photographic proof! A picture of it is enough!

The fillet steak in Rossinis is the most incredible thing I've ever tasted

Had the 8oz sirloin in The Elm Tree last night. Was gorgeous! Cooked to perfection with onions, mushroom & a choice of mash/gratin & veg or chips & salad and peppercorn sauce or garlic butter.

I was actually there myself on Sunday and it was nice and everything but not a patch on what I mentioned above! I would seriously recommend anyone to take a nice Sunday drive down around West Cork and drop into Willie Pa's on the way back - you will not be disappointed!

Headed to Jacques today as got a savage steak there before, closed on Sundays though :( Went to The Boardwalk, was never there before, great Ribeye there in fairness, very very nice.

Massive steak fan here, 2 best places in Cork at the moment in my little opinion for filllet steak are either Il Primo above the Silver Key, or the Cork Airport International Hotel. The one in the Hotel was a abnormally large until I realised the height of the steak was made up of about an inch of this incredible (And there's no other word) thick mushroom sauce. Looked solid until you put the knife down into it and then it spread out. Mmmmmmmm!

Heading down on Wed night any recent recommendations. Was in the bordwalk last time. It was decent but nothing to write home about. Staying in the Silver springs but will take a taxi but closer the better. Thx

There's nothing of note close to Silver Springs really. The standard of food on the city is incredible these days. Most places are great.

Having done a comprehensive search in December, I felt the fillet in Electric was the best. Market Lane excellent too. Luigi Malones very poor. Isaacs good but nothing spectacular. Amicus ditto. There was somewhere else which I have forgotten in my beefy haze.

Star Anise do a Duo Of Irish Beef - a 6 Oz fillet steak and “Pithivier” of braised beef - had it a few weeks back and it was beyond delicious. Stunning steak - beautifully cooked and seasoned and the beef was really lovely too.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,508 ✭✭✭Lemag

The nicest steaks which I've had in recent times have been in Market Lane and in Star Anise. The Cornstore and Bierhalle are worth honourable mentions but I've been quite disappointed with Isaacs and The Strasbourg Goose.

Les Gourmandises. Their roasted fillet of beef is easily the best choice for the discerning carnivore.

Market Lane looks like a winner so going to try that. As I am down on my own with work can I eat in the bar part and don't suppose they had a telly to watch the Liverpool match tomorrow. Is that too much to ask ha ha

Is Thady's in Farren still serving great steak? Had never heard of it until reading this thread but would definitely consider calling in sometime soon

They might have a telly in the kitchen.. There are plenty of pubs near by so you could try to time your meal around the game. I suggest the Old Oak for watching it.

Yes it is. I generally dont get steak when out as its something i like to cook myself so ive never tried the thady. Its only about a 2/3 min drive from me and everyone in the area raves about the place. I never heard a bad word said about it.
