The conclusion I reached in the other thread was that both THC and alcohol had their pros and cons but they weren't really comparable. Recently a friend asked me how I could spend so much time smoking. I pointed out that he plays World of Warcraft about 3-4 hours a day and as well as making him a homosexual who can't play skill based games, it's a much less productive form of escapism.

Surely MMORPG players are far worse than people who partake in either drug?

Never played it, so I don't really know.

You can dowload a trial, right?

Also, with MMORPGs do people want to talk to you?
I don't like talking to people.

I would laugh in the face of anyone who told me they played WOW for 3-4 hours a day.

People can send you free 3 day trials. He sent me one. I told him that I still have interest in pursuing sex and having an active social life. As for the talking thing, yeah, most of them are on teamspeak or ventrilo but I'd imagine you'd fit right in if you're socially inept.

    I'm beyond socially inept.

They actually call extreme cases of social anxiety disorder "Terry's syndrome".
    That's why I use boards.

Takes a fair bit of skill to participate in battlegrounds and raids.

Not really that dangerous though... Not leaving the house. Or do you mean from the pizzas and caffeinated drinks?

You can even compare wow with EVE.

    wow = 2/3 hours where EVE = 5/6 Years

I feel sorry for WOW addicts. You ever seen a hard core wow junkie after an all night raid, makes a heroin addiction look mild. Has cost many a nerd what little social lives/skills they had.

Cant speak of the MJ, never tried it.

Now Wow VS Eve online, thats another story :P

While WoW does take a degree of skill. For example skill is required to partake in the more competative player vs player combat, and problem solving skills and a degree of skill is required to make progress in end gaming raiding content. The areas in which skill is required, it requires you to spend multiple hours every day getting to that stage.

If you're having fun doing it, then who cares how long a day you spend doing it? The important part of it is that you're enjoying yourself. What people assume is that you sacrafice social skills for play time, which is complete horse shit.

EvE is a far more casual friendly game. You don't even need to be logged in for you to develop your character. Mind you, it takes a lot longer to develop your character, but you can stop playing EvE for a month, and when you come back your character may be finished training what ever skill you left training.

Weed is better than WoW though. Weed with WoW is also fun. But Alcohol beats all.

You didn't answer his question! Just how can you spend so much time smoking?:pac::pac:

Seriously tho, its the same as anything else, and unhealthy if you do to much of it.

I like the way you implied smoking was productive tho :P

3-4 hours a day playing a game is no different from 3-4 hours watching TV, or 3-4 hours reading, things which I know MANY people do.

Sorry. Acceptable games are counter strike 1.6, Warcraft 3 and Super Smash Bros Melee.

A few years back I wasted almost 12 months of my life on a similar MMORPG (that shall remain nameless)...didn't touch an awful lot of dope during that time; weed just makes you realise how absolutely pointless MMORPGs actually are and isn't conducive to character building and skills grinding. I'd probably still be playing it now if it weren't for the devs breaking the game balances.
TBH I prefer supporting gangland crime and giving myself emphaesyma...much more productive.

Haha I've a load of shows downloaded but I find after a smoke, the Sopranos is too intense for me so go looking for cartoons and nature documentaries.

Man, David Attenborough is probably the greatest person to ever live.

Wow is the shiz nitz... Oh joking aside, do you watch TV, play other games or do anything else apart from work and sleep of course, for 3-4 hours a day? Then you are a hyprocrit :P

I rather play at the weekends, same time I rather smoke or drink.

Don't see how you can compare a recreational drug with a game...

Don't see how you can compare a recreational drug with a game...

You ever woken up from an online COD binge at 6 in the morning and wonder why you were wasting your life?
    No?
    Then STFU!

I will not STFU, remember where you are...

Lets compare a recreational drug and working in lidl, shall we?

If you woke up at 6 in the morning from an online binge you must have gone to bed early?

There's no comparrison, simple as :)

That's a whole other topic, but it depends what you're watching on TV.

Well I would rather play wow all day and evening than watch the crap that is on TV.

The number of people I've seen trying to relate giving up WoW to overcoming drug addiction makes me think I'd rather have a dimebag than a 30-day card.

If I'm correct, I have the highest /played time in wow on boards.ie across all my characters (according to a recent thread on the WoW forum here). Yet still I'm not "addicted"

I rarely actually sit down and watch TV, I don't drink much at all (can't even remember the last time I was out in a pub), so dunno what the problem is, I don't do anyone any harm by enjoying playing a game I like

Also don't see the problem with smoking weed either so meh...

Well see, I would argue that weed and alcohol still leave you open to socialise with people. I mean youd have some serious skills if you could play WoW and flirt successfully at the same time.

WoW is every bit as addictive and destructive as any narcotic/addictive substance. I played it for over 2 years and I am only now seeing what i was like during that period, skipping nights out to stay in , not socialising, not excercising, becoming unhealthy and obsessed. All of those symptoms are the same as drug addiction.

Comparing it to watching tv for 3-4 hours, in my opinion, is moronic. I can easily go without TV but I couldnt go without WoW and anyone who plays it regularly and says they can go without it is suffering from another classic addiction trait, denial.

WoW itself is set up to be addictive, its not like any other game that has a defined ending or limits on what you can do. WoW is ever changing and adapting to ensure that there is no possible ending, no sense of completion, there is always something more to do, or at least it makes you feel like you have to.

WoW builds itself up to be a social game where you rely on others to 'complete' tasks that really cannot be ever completed as when you do the game creators simply create a new task. So immediately it drags you into a social network that replaces real life social networks.

Lastly, the facts speak for themselves, people have actually died from overplaying WoW due to neglecting their own body. What does that remind you of? Again, drugs addictions. I have not heard of any other game with that track record. WoW is every bit as dangerous as any drugs out there.

Complete BS. I've played WoW on and off since release. It's a hobby, a passtime, something I enjoy doing. It has little or no adverse effects on my life. I've a full time job, good friends I enjoy socialising with, other interests such as poker and football, and I excercise regularly. The only thing WoW has replaced in my life is sh!t tv.

It's a game, games are supposed to be fun and it is fun.
