storage collective idea

    Hello

I am a classic owner, and, like some of you I am sure, I must park the car outside (exposing it to the horrible irish elements)

My car is nearly 40 years old and I want to get it in out of the rain ! !

So I have seen a number of lock ups around town to let. The prices are a too high for me alone. So I am looking to see if anyone else out there is interested in sharing a space between 2, 3 or 4 cars ( in the general dublin area ) I've found places outside co dublin can offer more space for the euro, places like meath and kildare.

This would ideally be a place for clean, dry storage and restoration work (space permitting)

Anyone interested please reply to this post.
Also any comments or ideas are welcome

    Best

    JON

Tried doing this before, and the place I had my eye on was snapped up from under my nose.... :(

I'd be interested alright, depending on location. I'd prefer something just along/off the N11 corridor if possible - For me, the closer to Kilmacanogue, Roundwood or Annamoe, the better.

Depending on interest, I'd be prepared to organise something for approx. 3 others with similar needs...assuming there will be a broad geographic dispersal of those with an interest in forming similar collectives.

I'd hope to work on a budget of approx. 400-500 a month in rent plus bills, shared equally between the tenants, with 3 months paid up as a deposit. Insurance would be essential, as would a strict 'access policy', to prevent any messing about with others property etc.

I'd also specifically like to have an investment made in a co-op owned compressor and trolley jacks, while all other tools would be self supplied.

PM me if anyone's actually interested in this, and I'll get working on it. No time wasters please.

    Gil

I'm in dire need of a place to put my '90 Micra (yes, I know it's not really a classic, but I still want to restore it nevertheless). It's been sitting on my uncle's farm for about a year and a half and I'll need to move it out of there soon enough.

Location wise, anywhere in South Dublin (or even possibly north Wicklow or Kildare) would suit.

Price wise, as I'm still in college and only have a part-time job, I won't be able to spend too much on rent. If anyone can get a place relatively cheap, count me in.

I'd be interested in some storage. Up to 45 mins away. Would need to do the maths on it though.

Hi, I also have a middle aged car out in the rain so I'd be interested in pitching in with a few others for storage/workshop space. It would have to be on a budget though... The blessington/baltinglass road option sounds interesting.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,461 ✭✭✭Max_Damage

That Blessington one might be interesting. If the price is right with a few other people, I maybe interested. I'd need somewhere to do a bit of restoration and store some tools aswell.

Spotted this - rathnew 2000 sq ft / 800 pm could be divided between 6-7 peoples...

Might look at this one during the week - let me know

Okay - I'm interested in that one.

Spoke to the guy who advertised it already. He has some specific restrictions though that might put a few folks off taking it:

    1. There's no power. And there won't be either. It's to do with rates valuation etc. So we'd need a genny.
    2. There's no access on Sundays. Same rule is applied to all units in the park, and he'd get a load of hassle trying to explain it to the other tenants.
    3. He'd want one person to guarantee all financial matters, and to be accountable for anything that happens there.
    4. He doesn't want a load of people coming and going all the time, so a restricted number of keyholders would be required.
    5. He won't allow sub-letting, but would permit a properly formed co-op, depending upon the members status etc.

I'd suggest the way to handle this would be to have something in the order of a 6 member co-op, with a management committee so it could be registered as an unincorporated body.

As a starting point for discussion, taking this one as an example:

Committee to be elected following 100% subscription/sign-up.
Co-Op Treasurer to maintain a joint account with Chairperson.
All members would pay €150ish per month membership subscription.
Deposit plus two months rent to be paid in advance.
This would entitle you to (perhaps) two 'parking bays'. I know most of us would like a bit of extra space for a donor/tool bench etc.
No mains power tools could be run, as no suitable power supply available, although battery drills etc. would be fine.
A curfew time to be agreed for weeknights.
A website and private forum to be used to register when/who will be in the bunker, so we all know what's happening.
No non-members to be permitted......it's the only way to protect members from insurance/security perspective I reckon.
Only fully insured vehicles to be allowed inside the facility. If it's not insured and goes up in smoke, who'd pay for damage to the building/other vehicles etc.
The €100ish per month surplus to be used to pay for the forum/hosting, a camping gaz hob and a kettle for brews etc., along with possibly buying a small genny and portable lights if appropriate for winter use.
Absolutely no obstruction of entrance/exit for other members vehicles
Zero tolerance policy for meddling/fiddling with any other members property/tools/vehicle.
No storage of any third parties property for any reason, ever.
I'd suggest Saturdays to be a 'co-operative day' with members mucking in if they wish to help each other get work done etc....or just sit around drinking tea and moaning about their parts supplier.
I'd suggest perhaps two weeknights to be similar.
If you'd want to use your car on a Sunday, take it out on Saturday and return it early Monday morning. It'd suit me fine, and I'm sure others would feel the same....especially as you could leave your daily driver in the bunker while you play about with the pride and joy.
Given time, or perhaps by paying a little more, we could possibly negotiate Sunday access on concession.

How's that for starters? It's not going to be ready for another week or two anyway, but we should probably try to get the ball rolling a bit quicker on this. Napplechunks, I'm off work on Friday and can go see this place. How're you fixed to do the same?

Anyone else genuinely interested in getting in on this? If so, now's the time to either post or PM. Tick tock tick tock ;-)

I am looking at a place in Malahide, previously a car mechanic workshop, that could take in 11 cars for €170 / month each. It is suitably grubby with all necessary facilities. Easy access by DART and Starbucks almost on doorstep. Looking for 10 more "members". Any interest?

There was a shed big enough for a car and tools last week going for €50 per month! Snapped up fairly quick though..

You can count me in if anyone needs more heads €75 max per month

A couple of ideas: if we say 20sqm per person (roughly two parking spaces) the following may be of interest: (obviously the price comes down a lot if you take less space per person)

this one has an inspection pit and is “ideal for car repairs” according to the blurb:
80sqm in Redcross, Co. Wicklow for 380/mo or 95/mo between 4:
    http://www.daft.ie/searchcommercial.daft?search=Search+%BB&s[cc_id]=c4&s[a_id]=&s[min_size]=&s[max_size]=1500&s[pt_id]=4&s[search_type]=commercial&s[transport]=&s[advanced]=&s[price_per_room]=&s[furn]=&s[refreshmap]=1&offset=10&limit=10&id=36710

    80sqm workshop with power in rathgar @ 650/mo or 162.50 between 4:
    http://www.daft.ie/searchcommercial.daft?search=Search+%BB&s[cc_id]=ct1&s[a_id][0]=&s[min_size]=&s[max_size]=&s[sub_pt_id]=&s[pt_id]=4&s[search_type]=commercial&s[transport]=&s[advanced]=&s[price_per_room]=&s[furn]=&s[refreshmap]=1&offset=30&limit=10&id=35266

    186sqm warehouse/store in Brunswick St, D7 @ 1500/mo or 167/mo between 9:
    http://www.daft.ie/searchcommercial.daft?search=Search+%BB&s[cc_id]=ct1&s[a_id][0]=&s[min_size]=&s[max_size]=&s[sub_pt_id]=&s[pt_id]=4&s[search_type]=commercial&s[transport]=&s[advanced]=&s[price_per_room]=&s[furn]=&s[refreshmap]=1&offset=30&limit=10&id=32608

    232sqm in Ashford for 1333/mo or 121/mo between 11:
    http://www.daft.ie/searchcommercial.daft?search=Search+%BB&s[cc_id]=c4&s[min_size]=&s[max_size]=&s[sub_pt_id]=1&s[pt_id]=4&s[search_type]=commercial&s[transport]=&s[advanced]=&s[price_per_room]=&s[furn]=&s[refreshmap]=1&offset=10&limit=10&id=34732

or how about somewhere big enough for a whole club:
    415sqm on Sir John Rogersons Quay @ 3313/mo or 158/mo between 21:
    http://www.daft.ie/searchcommercial.daft?search=Search+%BB&s[cc_id]=ct1&s[a_id][0]=&s[min_size]=&s[max_size]=&s[sub_pt_id]=&s[pt_id]=4&s[search_type]=commercial&s[transport]=&s[advanced]=&s[price_per_room]=&s[furn]=&s[refreshmap]=1&offset=80&limit=10&id=34562

I spoke to the owner of the place on the Blessington/Baltinglass road today.

He has five sheds of which one is available now for storage only at 50/month per car. Access would be during normal working hours only but he will move any car out of the shed for collection by its owner out of hours by arrangement with him. It measures 75ft by 30ft so should hold 15 or so cars.

A second shed will be available in two or three months time as a workshop/storage unit for 5 to 6 cars. He is saying around 75/month per car depending on the cost of his insurance. Access out of hours would be by arrangement among the car owners so this set up would allow space for people to work on their cars when they want. He will want to let the whole shed out rather than just one or two spots, so a group will need to be organised with enough members to take it on.

I am thinking though that I would finish up spending a lot of money on diesel if I was to go there in any way regularly as I am based in the city so I would still be interested in finding somewhere closer...

    Dave.

id be quite interested in this, my bmw project is slowly rusting away due to lack of space, 50-60 quid wouldnt be a bad price once its in dublin...

    Hi guys
If you have a budget 0f €75 pm
, I know of a purpose built high security covered car park not open to public in dublin (not city) beside red line luas stop and four mins from M50 that may be interested in facilitating classic car storage

Fully lit and weather proof with monitored alarm.

No work shop facilities Yet but if enough classic car owners were interested this could be arranged.

360 spaces available and maybe a minimum of 20 to thirty takers to initiate its use for classic car storage.

would also be possible to use office/meeting room facilities at very low, to nil rates for cc club meetings

Would also be suitable for shows in winter and access can be 24/7

    Any takers ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,037 ✭✭✭shagman

That sounds interesting allright between classic car owners and other car clubs i reckon it's be a viable business. With that many users though security of tools etc might be an issue. You'll have to spill the beans on location though, people can't really judge whether they'd be interested or not without knowing where it is.

Getting quite excited about the potential here but The offer at the moment would be for simple secure dry car storage with monitored security and straight forward 24/7 access.

Currently cars could also be brought to working temperature and driven without road tax or insurance in this facility.(particularly good in winter)

In its current form no work other than cleaning polishing and minor tuning etc would be possible. power is available.

If enough people were interested additional facilities could possibly be added on. but this needs to be kept simple at the start. its all about numbers at this stage so let me know who has a serious interest.

It could certainly become a strong focal point for petrol heads of all descriptions and disparity particularly bona fide motor clubs

So what's the story with this lads? I'm interested in the €50 per month one in Wicklow, as it's nearer to me, although it would probably wouldn't be till January before I'd actually get putting the Micra into it (college exams and all sorts of shít to get out of the way first).

That's not a clever idea. What happens if damage is done to another users car, or if someone's motor goes up in flames and damages others property?

Don't get me wrong, it sounds great pricewise, but I couldn't see myself paying to store a car somewhere that leaves all liability firmly at my feet.

I take it this is a vacant office block? What location, and are the premises insured?

Given the way things are going, it looks like landlords would be happy getting any rental money at all for their empty spaces.... time to negotiate down back to normal life price levels.... I will enquire about the place in Malahide: it is quite sad looking and unsuitable for anything else than cars: this limits the market and the offers. Might be able to bag a bargain.

Anyone else interested in the place in Wicklow? Seems like a good deal.

Hi all, I went to look at the place on the Blessington/Baltinglass road today and it has potential. The shed he is looking to let out at the moment is about 200sqm (75ft long by 30ft wide)

    Good points:
    - it's big enough for about 20 cars
    - he's looking for 550/mo
    - 11 people can bring it down to 50/mo each and still have plenty of room to spare or 8 people could take it for 68.75/mo... etc
    - completely dry and clean. Previously used for storage of windows by a glazing firm.
    - secure - it's on a working farm so there are people around all the time
    - access is not a problem
    - lighting and power available
    - primarily for storage but 'light' work can be done ie: no gas welding or full resprays. 'Normal' servicing, maintenance, etc not an issue

    Not so good points:
    - 26 miles south from Dublin city centre (about 1 hour drive), so a bit far for anyone based in the city or north of the centre. Not a problem unless you are planning to work on the car frequently.
    - only one power point at present but he will fit more if we ask.
    - it is a bare shed - no pit or other facilities
    - no toilet - but there is a pub nearby

If enough people are interested in committing to this I will go back to him and make arrangements, so if you're interested let me know.

    Dave.

^ Count me in, provided we get enough people to bring down the price to around €50/month. The lack of a pit would bother me too much, and the electricity issue can be easily resolved .

    Anyone else interested?

I think you should try a few cars in that shed before you do your financial sums, ie. that shed looks more like 6-8 cars to me especially if you want to get bonnets and boots open without moving cars.

    http://www.garageplans.co.uk/enter.html?target=faq-1.html&lang=garageplans

talks about the why people are not using their garage's for parking the car. A smart car can fit into a garage that is only 2.6m long yet a Jaguar XJ8 LWB needs at lease twice as much 5.3m. 95% of UK cars are shorter than 5m long. The width of the garage should allow for the car door to open on the drivers side and a clearance space on the passengers side. With the average width of cars being 1.8m and an allowance of 800mm for the door access and a clearance of 300mm on the passengers side, then a minimum width of 2.9m is needed."

There is more than one answer to the space requirement:
The number of cars that can fit into a space depends on the purpose. For storage, you place them as close as possible to each other with handbrakes off so that the bare minimum is required. For easy access, no more than a standard parking space is required (2.4m x 4.8m or 8ft x 16ft). A larger space allowance is only required where there is some permanent physical obstruction to take into account, ie: the four walls of a single car garage. Obviously, circulation space is required for a multi-user workshop set up, but this can be fairly minimal too. No circulation space is needed for pure storage.

At 30ft wide, a line of cars could be placed side on to the wall on one side and another line of cars could be placed nose to wall on the other side and still allow circulation space inside. Alternatively you could have three lines of cars parallel to the side walls with space between. Or you could place them all nose to wall.... You could also have part of the space as storage and part as a workshop if that worked out better.

The point is there are any number of ways of using the space depending on whether you want it for storage or as a workshop. Just take a look in the door of your local back street workshop and see how they do it if you don't believe me. I wouldn't get too upset about the exact details until there is a group of people committed to taking the shed and they have all looked at it.

... and ideally, you can place all cars on small roller trolleys so you can move them about easily...

...or hang them out of the ceiling...

Apologies, I appear to have gone off on a rant on the last posting:)

Well presently, I'm just looking for a dark corner, to stash a car in. I'll need to sort a couple of bogies for it as it doesn't really want to roll anywhere :(

Is anyone still interested in this? Only two so far plus myself, so not enough to take on the rent for a shed unless anyone can find something cheaper...

    YES

    I am.

I spoke to Trevor last week. during the conversation he said 50 euro per week, he didn't say anything about a minimum number of takers ??

Is this definitely the case ? anyone ?

    that's a shame if so.

Seems the other offer by Biggus got a lot of attention but disappeared.

Maybe we should make a separate thread for the blessington storage option??

    Cheers

    Jon

When I spoke to Trevor he said he wanted to rent the whole shed as his preferred option. I think the 50/mo is if you deal directly with him on a storage only basis and no-one wants to take the whole shed.

If no-one goes for the whole shed he said he will put his combine in the back half of the shed and either rent the other half as storage/workshop or take in cars at the 50/mo for storage only. I'm wondering whether or not I want someone driving a huge agricultural machine close to my 'pride and joy'? I may yet have to.

My car is still out in the rain...

Count me in for the place that costs 50 Euro per month, however it would probably be January before I'd actually get moving the car in.
