Why is everyone quoting the spot rate with doing conversion comparisions?

You will NEVER get the spot rate.

Have you ever looked at the minimum wage etc.., in relation to the UK and Ireland?

What UK websites can you buy from in stg? I know game.co.uk is one, but they don't ship items over 1kg outside UK.

Because the spot rates is a definate one and one from which you can estimate the rate that you will get. It is surely more satisfactory than saying "I think you will get 81 pence for the €uro" and not providing any objective basis for your thinking.

It might be a good idea to compile a list of all sites that accept sterling and deliver to Ireland.

Can anybody recommend a jewelery site in the UK that delivers here?

    I've come across the following:
    http://www.love2have.co.uk
    http://www.jewellery.tv/
    http://www.thediamondstore.co.uk/
    http://www.madaboutjewellery.com
    http://www.ampalian.com
    http://www.treasurebox.co.uk

Bought something for 31 pounds last Friday and appeared on my Mastercard statement today for 36.56 euro. Rate was 0.847921 which was only about 1.5% off the spot rate.

We stocked up on the baby food's, nappies and 30% off Gap on Sat in Banbridge and went through on my card at approx .84

Someone said earlier in this thread that it takes a few days for the saving to come through - this is not true; as has been seen here and also in johnfas's posting above.

remember visa charges 1.5% conversion fee no matter what the transation etc is (pos, money out etc) so basically you are getting the spot rate plus their cut!

Bought something on amazon.co.uk on Saturday that came to £39.88. I was charged €48.17.

Conversion rate of £1 = €1.21. was printed on the invoice.

Minimum wage has nothing to do with it. This price difference has been around for years.

    That is for illustration only.

Amazon.co.uk charge in Sterling. The euro price they quote is merely a guide. They don't ever charge you in euro.

    pixmania the same ..

this is £289 on the uk site,
    €338.61 using xe.com/ucc @ 1 EUR = 0.853479 GBP

the SAME ITEM on pixmania.ie is €378, €40 dearer

I reported something similar ro Pixmania using their pricematching reporting address. I asked the Irish site to pricematch the UK one. Funny enough no reponse so far.

The gaps are getting very big now so local retailers who seem to be relecting the exchange rates in some cases at least are getting very competitive when you factor everthing in.

is there a company in the uk who will forward electrical stuff to you when you buy from amazon? (they don't deliver to Ireland)

dont know if this has been mentioned but play.com are still using a rate of around .70 and they will not allow you to buy goods in stg and have them delivered to Ireland. Anyone know anyway around this, seems a bit scandalous

No way round it .. shop elsewhere if possible to find your item cheaper.
I like play.com but tend to avoid them now over ther scandalous exchange rate on offer.
