Soupster - what would you suggest as a very small but powerful inset stove? (Upstairs fireplaces are 16" wide.) Just a fantasy at the moment, mind...

Stovax Riva 66 8kw inset stove.

Chucks out some serious heat indeed.:D

    Stoves are great

    BUT

Insulation is also a key thing here too.

A house will only be as warm ah the house insulation (if any) allows.

If the house aint insulated, then the house wont hold the heat. That includes energy effiecent windows and doors too

Have a read and look at this post.

But insulation in Ireland costs thousands. Was reading recently in the Daily Telegraph that it costs £300 to £500 to insulate a typical semi-D. If that was what it cost here, I'd get the money together somehow and do it like a shot.

As my father said to me before.........

"short term pain for long term gain"

    Makes sense.;):)

My house is completely insulated throughout (see pics on that thread link)

When I have the Stovax stove on,the heat is unreal and the house holds the heat so well.

Sounds good. Where does your father suggest Irish people get the money to pay ten times the price English people pay?

Well my father and mother allways taught me to save for a rainy day, even from a young age.

And if you can also learn to do things yourself, then you will be a bit better off for it too.

Wize words from both of them, that has has never been forgotten by me to this day.;)

Also sounds good. What do they suggest you do when the rain keeps raining and the savings are gone?

Get a few large tanks and collect and harvest the rainwater.;)

Anyway the best bet is to go to a good big stove/fireplace shop and see all the various stoves (free standing and inset) on display and also working too.

That way you can see and compare them in the flesh, see like for like and see what you personally like too.

I didnt know this was a poor/charity/freebie thread???How in the hell do you think you would get a stove then either????......"I will trade you 4 heads of cabbage and 5 duck eggs for that stove there in the corner"......Things aint that bad yet.

Before I put you on my ignore list, I'd like to elucidate that I was responding to the unrealistic homespun philosophy - sorry if I was a little mocking about that.

I have no objection to paying for what I buy; however, I do object to paying ten times what the people in the country next door pay for it.

I never said I paid ten times the price for anything.I merely said that a stove is great, but that insulation is also key to heat and keeping a house warm.Feel free to put me on your ignore list if you wish too.Why you feel the need to do that is beyond me though???Anyways....Im off to get my 4 heads of cabbage and my 5 duck eggs (lol).

No, you said things that implied that poor people are poor because they're unthrifty.

I've taken up a policy of putting anyone who makes utterly joyless and cruel statements on 'ignore'. Life is more placed since.

You are the one asking me how to pay for things and bringing up money matters. No one here apart from you is going on and on about money.Have a read of your last few posts on money and paying out for things.
All I did was post a pic of a Stovax Riva 66 inset stove, some bales of briquettes and then some pics of insulation and some advice too.Ive not once mentioned money/costings here.

No, I am the one mocking simplistic "Ah sure in the old days we walked to school barefoot. On nails. Only we couldn't afford nails. But we saved up and got ourselves nails" philosophy.

My point is that insulation is £300 in Britain and €3,000 in Ireland. Your point is that saving in the good times has some relation to that.

Post 245 onwards you have issues with money and keep on asking how to pay for things.
Did I say "good times" anywhere???Eh nope.

Anyway, back to my question, Sooty_soupy - what's a good inset stove for an (upstairs) small fireplace?

Qualitymark, Daly Telegraph! Do you believe everything you read in a newspaper? There is no way a cost of £300 - £500 for house insulation in the UK which in Euro is €375 - €626 would equate to a figure of €3000 (as quoted by you in Ireland). Prove your point before posting - get the exact details of the insulation work in the UK, and get real costs from contractors here for the same work, over to you.

Q1. How much will cavity wall insulation cost?
A1. The cost depends on the size of your house, however, with subsidies, it will usually cost £100 - £350. However, it can save up to £135 a year, so can pay for itself in 1 - 3 years.

    And in Ireland:

    http://www.rollercoaster.ie/Discussions/tabid/119/ForumThread/141251446/Default.aspx

Mind you, Electric Ireland is quoting only (!) nearly €800:

    https://www.electricireland.ie/ei/residential-energy-services/home-services/cavity-fill-insulation.jsp

and this crowd offer cavity + attic + BER cert for €600

    http://www.cosihomes.ie/cavity-wall.asp

For the Irish prices, I was going on what I'd seen offered on billboards outside my local insulation place. Actually, this sounds doable! Thanks for correcting me!

The Tesco link you posted quotes a 3 bed semi-detached house for attic £358 in Euro €447 and cavity wall insulation £323 in Euro €403 Total in Euro €850 - You say Electric Ireland are quoting €600! over to you.

Yes - as I said, I'd seen local quotes for €3,000 and €4,000, but having looked around online, I see that there are apparently far better prices. I've notionally asked for a couple of quotes, but we shall see if these lures are real examples when I get the answers.

Lamartine Fireplaces in Balymount,Dublin and also Heating Distributors in Dublin Business Park,Finglas are 2 large showrooms where you can view various types of freestanding and inset stoves and see them working too.

Well worth a visit to either or both places.
