Looking at them myself, I think I'd prefer risk being lost in the middle of nowhere with a puncture under a snow storm than having to use one of them ...

cough cough cough ... almost choked to death there, I will NEVER afflict this to my nice personalized fixie ( that has been described as 'Sh1t Hot' by some 2 people including me) ... Saddle bags on Fixies anyway ... that's just wrong, only Blorg can get away with it ...

After reading the Euro Rules and following an intense period of internal reflection, I no longer ride with a saddle bag. I strongly suggest all of you follow suit. If you can't fit it in your pockets, you don't need it. This rule is null and void for the DGD trip.

Saddle bags of any sort are a bit dodgy.

I see ... less is more and all that.

You guys are way too purist.
I'm going to start a revolution .... sunglasses inside helmet straps, non matching water bottles and a saddle bag(might even be flourescent pink one)

I have a massive Saddle bag and i'm gosh darn proud of it! There's a tube in it. And tyre levers. And sometimes other stuff too. And it expands! And it nearly touches my rear wheel when expanded.

Nothing wrong with campaining for real ale, instead of settling for that awful mass-marketed swill we put up with all too easily these days. You don't even need a beard either! But slippers are comfy.

If you are shocked by the idea of a saddle bag on a fixie you will just love what I've done with my Bowery.

surely all of that paraphernalia has ruined your feeling of 'oneness' with the bike, the pureness, the karma you experience when riding etc etc??

Well the rack is very handy for carrying stuff to/from work/shops and the lights keep me alive cycling up the mountains in the dark. But yes, you are right, I think I need a second "pure" fixie :D

I've run out of space. One of the few downsides to apartment living. We've a bike store room downstairs, but I'm always too nervous to put the 'nice' bikes down there. It's a shame, I really love building bikes now. Probably good for the wallet though.

I have been busy charging today, will probably buy a few more from DX as some of these are a bit old at this stage :D

    batteries.jpg

I must say the back lights are very effective up the mountains in the pitch black, cars see me from far away and pass really wide. I have one on constant, two on flash and one on strobe. Regarding the front, the TK11 is very effective, lights up the road to quite a distance and oncoming cars dip their lights quite quickly in general (in some cases from around a corner.) I have had repeated experience of cars turning right across the road waiting for me to pass even when I am a ridiculous distance away (up to 200m away), they must think I am a motorbike going substantially faster.

To be honest my experience so far is that the way cars behave I seem to be a hell of a lot _more_ visible than in the middle of the day.

I will try to get some proper shots but this is from my little point and shoot up the mountains yesterday (there was a little bit of snow.) First one is shook, long handheld exposure.

It's very pleasant cycling up the mountains in the dark, we should organise some boards weeknight spins.

Sounds good. I have moved into the world of a super cheap geared road bike which I must yet take out for a proper spin.

First photo is good actually, shame about the blur. Is that the sun, or the city ?

Thanks, it was a 4 second exposure so no chance of keeping it steady without a tripod! It's the city, the sun was well down at that stage, around 19:30. It looks brighter than it is due to the exposure length. Location was just at the top of Pine Forest Road, before you go down, right at the end and then up again towards the viewpoint (last photo is from the way up there.)

That would be sacrilege, you must do it on the banana bike surely :D

On a side note I am now considering what cheap DX lights I should get to complement my Fenix (thanks again for the recommendation.) Considering those "900 lumen" flood monsters but not sure re: runtime and also the idea that you could actually end up with too much light up close to the bike which would desensitise your eyes to the light usefully being thrown by the Fenix.

EDIT: Regarding the spins, I will post a new thread for that, I would be well on for something leaving Sandyford environs 6-ish and heading up Djouce-Lugalla-Sally Gap-Military Firing Range-Bohernabreena-Dublin (for example.) Probably want to have a snack before something like that rather than waiting for your dinner.

Jesus Blorg. I think there may be a carbon footprint issue with all those lumens!:)

Just to get back to the saddle bag think though, I prefer the old spare tube/tyre strapped to the saddle stem with an old toe clip strap á la Eddie Merckx. Very hipster retro on the auld fixie...

Hey Blorg, where'd you pick up that pannier rack? I'm looking for one that mounts on the stays...

    Tnx.

It's a standard rack salvaged from an old bike, attached with P-Clips on the stays and the top bit to the rear brake drilling. I got the P-Clips in Joe Daly's; they are supposedly a common electrical item but couldn't get them in my local hardware shop or many other bike shops. Let me know if you need any more info on how I got it on!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,408 ✭✭✭studiorat

    Thanks Blorg.
It's a muddy fox frame and the break cable covers the single tube wishbone shape seat stays thingy. So I guess if I attach to the seat post the p-clips should fit nicely on the bottom of the stays. I'm hoping this will give me clearance for panniers what with a small frame and my big feet. :)

Now are p-clips the same as jubilee clips (hose clips)?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,995 ✭✭✭✭blorg

I don't think they are quite the same although jubilee clips might work either.

They are like this, they clamp around the stay and you just tighten on with the rack in place between the bolt and clip:
