Is your Xmas party also cancelled?

This morning in the Herald AM i read an article about 71% of Xmas parties are being cancelled. I could not believe that people were not at least trying to do something for moral.

This morning my CEO told me that they are cancelling ours also. I was more than surprised as we have not been affected by the slow down in the economy but yet they are worried about expenses and so on so they are going to cancel it. There is talk of doing something where the company carry some of the cost but looks like it might just be dinner and they pay for like 20-40% of the cost.

They left it fairly late to book our xmas party and it was going to be in November... which is a bit naff.

But obviously thanks to these cancellations we are now able to have it in December.

Ours was cancelled weeks ago - not surprising though as I work in Financial Services

In financials services, i know lots of people who's xmas parties have been cancelled along with any other social team nights, overtime, bonuses, promotions, travel expenses, pay increases and so on and so forth...

Next step is the Axe ..

I used to work for a well known video/dvd chain. They used to have thier christmas parties in February, mid week, to save money.


Our meal gets paid for, and entry into a (crap) night club, after that, we are on our own.

Ours is still on. As usual, the staff who go contribute a small amount towards it (€20).
I'm not going though.

Ours is still going ahead and Ive been organising it. Ive been able to save 40% of the cost of last years through a bit of haggling.

Staff attend for free and there is accommodation provided for a small fee.

Yap there's some really weird behaviour going on around and about. Some companies are actually cranking up prices as well as tightening the belt. I'm not at all sure what that's meant to achieve coming into a recession, maybe they are trying to pay off debts or build up cash reserves before everyone else is broke, but they really aren't making things any better for themselves.

I think you'll find they do this because most managers are now running around like headless chickens because they don't know what to do.

Our boss converted his shed into a pub a few years ago during the good times. There's a bar, dart boards, pool tables and a carps table I reckon we'll be going there this year as our company got hit hard by the slow down.

I work in the motor trade, and amazingly, ours is still on! We don't have loads of staff though, so it isn't a huge expense. My hubby's is cancelled though, his boss got sick of paying a fortune for parties and then people not turn up or bitch about how crap it was.

I've worked in a pub for 3 years now where the owner is quite tight so we've never even had a free pint let alone an xmas party! On top of that all the staff are such different ages and such different personaliites etc. that it probably wouldn't be much use anyway :rolleyes:

No Christmas party here, as usual. Last year we did have Christmas lunch, next door, and we paid for it. The good news is that the 25th is a weekday this year, so we'll actually get a day off. W00t!

Have not had one the last few years, we just got a bonus instead but I think this year that won't be happening either.

We got a pay freeze so they've decided to give us a big Christmas party to make up for it. I'd rather the money to get pissed instead of a meal and some crappy band tbh!

Our Social Coordinator was out sick for a month so I've heard nothing but I doubt very much that it will be cancelled. I don't even know what they do for a Christmas party as it's my first year but as long as there is a bar it's all good.

Mine says they pay for it but we have to organise it ourselves amongst our departments and there is a limit on the amount per head.

I prefer this. We can grab platters of food in a pub and spend the rest on booze :pac:

No, we never get a Christmas party.

We usually end up organising something ourselves. It usually involves going to a gig. That is perfect for me as that is my ideal Christmas party (I also do be heavily involved in the decision making process).

I've got two parties this year .... two days in row. All paid for

Haven't a clue what we're doing, but if it's like the previous few years:

- we'll have to pay for it anyway
- it'll be a meal in some chinese/italian/thai restaurant
- 90% of people will go home after this as everyone will be driving anyway
- what's even more annoying is that, unlike most companies, we don't get paid early in December so will be smashed for Xmas.
(of course on the "plus" side we don't have the 5-6 week pain of waiting for our next pay cheque I suppose)

I get 2, maybe 3. Paid for. For some crazy reason we have to spend our social budget, or we have it cut and they won't uncut it.

Its especially crazy when ya consider I work in a financial institute. Although not all of us get to go to the party, and no dates.
