It's now a common trait for STB's to be released as a "work in progress" with some specs based on what hopefully may materialise.

The Octagon SF918HD was no exception, and there are many reports of the specs being somewhat optomistic to the extreme, with only the PVR functionality becoming possible in recent weeks by way of "beta" software releases.

I did get rid of my SF918 though, in favour of the TM6900Super, and so far, I'm very glad to be back to using Technomate. Always liked the menu's and simple UI.

    NOTICE (again)

Don't mention any other forum users (I think we know of whom I speak)
    Don't discuss anything about soft-cams.
I believe Enigma isn't illegal in itself, so I guess it can be mentioned.

While I find this thread interesting, I still have to keep things within the bounds of boards.ie rules.

    fully understand ... ;)

I agree also with what you say where alot of boxes seem to be sold on the premise of what i could do in the future... its a very dangerous thing to do and seems to now be common place amongst linux satellite.

I think its safe to say that before you buy a linx satellite box, make sure it does what you want it to do and not what it could do.

I'm releasing the WatBox 2010 just after Christmas. It will require you to solder in your own tuners (DVB-c, DVB-t2, DVB-s2), two slots.

It will use Gentoo Linux so you will have to recompile the x86 tool Chain and OS 1st on a plain vanilla Debian desktop, reinstall to Gentoo, then build the MIPS cpu tool chain for the Gentoo on the setbox on the Gentoo Desktop. (All command line/Console based tools).

The GUI uses a GTK+ layer and MONO ported from a old version of MythTV. The OS is booted from the PVR hard drive using a separate CRAMFS partition into RAM Disk.

The Firewire, HDMI, USB, CI for CAM and ethernet may get supported on version 0.9 of the Firmware. Currently it's at version 0.0.1

You have to add DeCSS your self to the build to enable playback of commercial DVDs on its DVD recorder.

Blind scan will use a freeware x86 windows FFT (spectrum analysis) sw, but it is currently for Windows only, so Wine 1.0 must be also installed. Wine Is Not an Emulator, so an x86 emulator for MIPS is required also. Or when the ethernet is working the Blind Scan could run on the PC using i/o to tuner via the ethernet.

Enigma support depends on getting an early sample box sent to the guy in Poland that ported it to the Reelbox Lite.

Please send contributions to speed up this project to my account via paypal.

    LOL, got banned, eh? :D:D
Yeah, that happens , some of the forums have the same mods so what you say on one gets you kicked on the other one. Sort of "plug and play" feature. :p

But dont worry, here mods are not affiliated in any way with Darkbox range of products so if usual trolls (as i have seen over and over again on the other forums) do come here they will have to play by the same rules as the rest of us.

So you are all obviously having a pot shot at me for one anyway as I have expressed interest in this box on that forum.
Why?, because it can supposedly do Mpeg 4 DVB-T.
That's the biggest seller for me.
Also, ccam is important for card reading ease of use.
Some of you may consider Alsat forum users as low IQ as stated earlier in the post but with all due respect the box isn't out yet.
It is a re-branded box but as of yet none of you can make the claim that the software the Alsat team will provide will not do what they say it can do.
You can talk about past endeavours all you like but right now the Darkbox9000 has not been proven yet.
I have no intention of buying until the feedback comes in.
Early posts regarding being in a queue were made on my part out of excitement for what the box sellers are claiming it can do.
Let's go and analyse all of your posts and see what we can derive from your posts, i.e. you have a Low IQ etc.

    Hi TVDX,

If you think people here and mean you should check usenet! ;) Anyhow, nobody is taking a pot shot at you. Please dont take comments here personally, they are not directed at you.. its only a discussion.

All i'm saying is that past experience with seller hasn't been the best one and sales pitch "does exactly what it says on the tin" hasn't really been true with past product so make sure it does what you want it to do before purchasing. As you said Darkbox9000 has not been proven yet, so makes sense to check first before purchasing. Don't take their word on it and don't fall for "in next upgrade"

Lots for boxes can do Mpeg 4 DVB-T.

    Take care.

    .............ok

Looks its a rebranded ipbox 9000, no matter what crap alsat come out with it this isnt going to change. The specs are the 100% the exact same. I called them low IQ as looking at 90% of the posts in the alsat darkbox 9000 thread seem to be from people who have a notion about linux satellite receivers, but because its from alsat its going to be amazing. Seems like 99% of the members are some sort of moderator aswell so they must spend most of the day deleting any negative posts.

If you want a darkbox 9000 then buy an ipbox 9000 from a german site as it'll be cheaper (as uk satellites are a rip off), and if alsat ever do get anything special running on that darkbox 9000 then it'll work on the ipbox aswell.

If you want dvb-t then just a dvb-t tuner for the ipbox 9000, as it isnt something special the darkbox can do.

    edit: post meant for tvdx

Others can do Mpeg 4 DVB-T but I think it's of interest that this one does too.
Yes it's a re-badge but they will probably sell this box at a lower price than the IP9000.

I think the mention of the tuner needing changing isn't such a strange one either.
If you look at the review of the IP from Dr. Dish on Youtube, they actually have the tuners out in front of the receiver and they speak a bit on this.

the man himself said its going to be dearer than the dreambox 800 (which judging by rip off uk prices, the dreambox is over 450 euros), which means its more than likely going to be at least 500euro, which is about the price of the ipbox 9000.
