Pigheads no girl but truth be told, first time this was heard there was almost a couple of glassy eyes in the house. Sad lyrics, sad voice and even the instruments sound like they're heartbroken (check out the weeping violins circa the four minute mark.

Though I have a broken heart
Im too busy to be heartbroken
Theres a lot of things that need to be done
Lord I have a broken heart

Though I have a broken dream
Im too busy to be dreaming of you
Theres a lot of things that I gotta do
Lord I have a broken dream

And Im wasted all the time
Ive gotta drink you right off of my mind
Ive been told that this will heal given time
Lord I have a broken heart

And Im crying all the time
I have to keep it covered up with a smile
And Ill keep on moving on for a while
Lord I have a broken heart

    An obvious choice by Mogwai:

    Edit to add these two...

Nine Inch Nails, Ghosts, Track 28:

Some beautiful pieces of music posted here, some I have never heard before so thanks all for sharing. In particular to the OP for the particular link to Samuel Barber - the poem accompanying the music is just beautiful and so meaningful.

And now for my own contributions:):

Hard to beat this one imo!

This is a beautiful song, brings a tear to my eye every time

Brilliant use of Cats in the Cradle in line with the plot of this ad from the Troubles.

Of course, being 7 or 8 at the time I thought the ad was the height of coolness mainly because it shows people getting shot

Town I Loved so Well is another one.

    Honey - Bobby Goldsboro

    Ballad - New Model Army
When they look back at us and they write down their history
What will they say about our generation?
We're the ones who knew everything still we did nothing
    Harvested everything, planted nothing
    ........
Well I stand on these hills and I watch Her at night
A thousand square miles, a million orange lights
Wounded and scared, She lies silent in pain
Raped and betrayed in the cold acid rain
And I wish and I wish
    We could start over again
Yes I wish and I wish
We could win back Her love once again...

Colourblind by Counting Crows. It always brings a tear to my eye.
    Accidental babies by Damien Rice
The No Seatbelt Song by Brand New. I dunno if you'd call it "sad" as such though.
Sometimes I wake up crying by the Dixie Chicks:o
Hide and Seek by Imogen Heap.
Stay Together For the Kids by Blink-182

The opening bars of Mozart's Requiem:

This number by the Smashing Pumpkins:

    Neil Young:

    Phillip Glass - Metamorphosis:

Aphex Twin - Hexagon. Like everything else on this album, this tune is happy, sad, comforting and unsettling all at once.

All very sad and very beautiful :) I think its somehow easier to make a sad piece of music than a happy one.

On the flipside, the happiest, most optimistic music I've ever heard must be the "Ode to Joy" passage from Beethoven's 9th:

This song is universally sad and I wonder is it because of the sad circumstances that are related to the origins of the song. Would it be just as sad if we weren't aware of the tragedy of his childs accident:(

"Atmosphere" by Joy Division, sad circumstancually anyway.

Lip wobbling moment when this song is played in 'Control' (Ian Curtis story by Anton Corbijn). Totally agree with this one Nailz.

Aw yeah I seen that, it was hard to be a man, but I did it!! There was a nice little memorial scene for Ian Curtis in which they used the song and the video in 24 Hour Party People.
