It's ACIDBURNS's laptop from the very cheesy and unrealistic HACKERS movie...

    The Twelve Days of NYIIX

On the first day of Christmas, NYIIX gave to me,
A BPDU from someone's spanning tree.

On the second day of Christmas, NYIIX gave to me,
    Two forwarding loops,
And a BPDU from someone's spanning tree.

On the third day of Christmas, NYIIX gave to me,
    Three routing leaks,
    Two forwarding loops,
And a BPDU from someone's spanning tree.

On the fourth day of Christmas, NYIIX gave to me,
    Four Foundry crashes,
    Three routing leaks,
    Two forwarding loops,
And a BPDU from someone's spanning tree.

On the fifth day of Christmas, NYIIX gave to me,
    Five flapping sessions,
    Four Foundry crashes,
    Three routing leaks,
    Two forwarding loops,
And a BPDU from someone's spanning tree.

On the sixth day of Christmas, NYIIX gave to me,
    Six maintenances notices,
    Five flapping sessions,
    Four Foundry crashes,
    Three routing leaks,
    Two forwarding loops,
And a BPDU from someone's spanning tree.

On the seventh day of Christmas, NYIIX gave to me,
    Seven broadcast floods,
    Six maintenances notices,
    Five flapping sessions,
    Four Foundry crashes,
    Three routing leaks,
    Two forwarding loops,
And a BPDU from someone's spanning tree.

On the eighth day of Christmas, NYIIX gave to me,
    Eight defaulting peers,
    Seven broadcast floods,
    Six maintenances notices,
    Five flapping sessions,
    Four Foundry crashes,
    Three routing leaks,
    Two forwarding loops,
And a BPDU from someone's spanning tree.

On the ninth day of Christmas, NYIIX gave to me,
    Nine CDP neighbors,
    Eight defaulting peers,
    Seven broadcast floods,
    Six maintenances notices,
    Five flapping sessions,
    Four Foundry crashes,

    Ten proxy ARPs,
    Nine CDP neighbors,
    Eight defaulting peers,
    Seven broadcast floods,
    Six maintenances notices,
    Five flapping sessions,

Would you not be better off with a reverse-polarity diode?

Oh honey bunch - you say the nicest things! :D

A diode is an electronics device that allows current to flow in one direction only. A reverse-polarity diode is when it is wired such that it isn't allowing the current to flow. Hence it is fighting the flow of power much more effectively than a resistor (which is what is in the picture), which is subject to Ohm's law of P = I^2 R or P = V^2 / R.

    Understand? :D

So... is that... the same as like... just smashing the resistor with a hammer? Kickin' it old school? All this diode lark is probably just a fad.

OMG that's actually a MUCH better solution!

A diode will still allow the current to flow in the other direction - but a resistor smashed with a hammer? That shouldn't allow the current to flow at all!

Unless, of course, the voltage gets high enough that the dialectric properties of the air start to break down*.

(* otherwise known as a spark jumping the gap) :D

Well, that explains how a stun-gun works, Thanks.

Thank you, I knew there was some reason for that pesky diode. Glad I got out of electric engineering when I did, my crazy hammer time methods would have rocked far too many boats!
