Russia threatens to Nuke Polska

"By deploying, Poland is exposing itself to a strike - 100%," warned Colonel General Anatoly Nogovitsyn. He added that Russia's security doctrine allowed it to use nuclear weapons against an active ally of a nuclear power such as America.
Poland has agreed to host elements of a US global anti-missile system after Washington agreed to boost Poland's own military air defences.
Ukraine is prepared to open its missile defence network to cooperation with European and other foreign powers.

The Ukrainian foreign ministry said that the demise of a bilateral Russian-Ukrainian defence agreement earlier this year 'allows Ukraine to establish active cooperation with European countries'.

They should parachute in several million crates of Smirnoff. The Russians won't be able to resist a free piss-up. When they're all sleeping it off we can steal all their stuff.

?? blame the US? Poland wanted this! What held up the agreement was Poland wanting advanced US anti air defences and a clause that meant the US would jump to Polands aid in the event of an attack at a quicker pace than NATO would take!
"It is no good when assistance comes to dead people," Mr. Tusk said, as far too many Georgians have learned. NATO, he feared, would take "days, weeks" to mobilize a response to aggression against Poland.

so shove your anti america crap - the Poles WANT THIS.
Lets not do anything to defend ourselves oh no lets not upset the Russians
lets pull down our trousers and bend over instead
oh and of course Russia actually has a right to a sphere of influence !

I assume they're talking about adding Poland to their list of targets in event of a nuclear strike and/or nuclear war.

I don't think they have their missiles out, steam rising from their ends, pointing at Poland right now for an imminent strike or anything.

Other nuclear powers probably have half the world or more on their target lists too.

I suppose we should just be grateful that Ireland probably doesn't make anyone's lists :p And that prevailing winds are south westerly given who we're next door to..

Did they get to vote on it?

Do you understand the concept of a cold war? And how delicate it is?

Only thing that stopped them nuking each other was the fear of getting nuked back. Take away that fear and we have a big problem.

Its not anti-American , its fact. If the Russians were pulling the same **** I'd be pissed at them too.

So now of course the Russians are going to have to do something to counter this, in other words, cold war 2.

Why shouldn't we have our own nuclear missile defense system?
We could bully smaller, more vunerable countries like Switzerland and Albania.

The US want this. Poland is being offered a package they cannot refuse. As usual, the US has these small time states against the wall. It's the "your either with us or against us" scenario.

What do you think this whole Russia/Georgia **** is about?

Jaysus lads read into it please:
During the 18 months, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk had for several times expressed his hope that Poland could be protected immediately by the United States in case of danger, implying the deployment of Patriot missiles.

On Thursday, the United States finally yielded to the request which had not been responded to for quite a long time.

Under the agreement, the United States will help augment Poland's defenses by deploying a Patriot missile-launching unit, which includes 96 missiles and by setting up a military base, in exchange for placing 10 missile defense interceptors in the European country.

Referring to the deal, Tusk said "we have finally got understanding of our point of view that Poland, being a crucial partner of NATO and an important friend and ally of the United States, must also be safe."

He also revealed that the United States had become more receptive to Poland's request in the light of Russia's military action in Georgia.

The missile shield wouldn't be worth squat against a country like Russia (or even China), it's designed to shoot down a very small number of missiles. Russia doesn't need to do anything at all to counter this, it already did by building thousands upon thousands of nukes decades ago.

This is just Russia sabre rattling, and looking for better deals the next time it comes to the bargaining table, they're finding it hard to get used to a world where they are not a superpower, but rather a commodity supplier.

we are supposed to have moved on from the cold war! Instead we have Russia invading US allies and US allies putting missile shields in as a result of fear because of that invasion!
Its a huge step backwards for the whole world

also its 10 missiles against thousands of nuclear warheads!! Its not comparable to Cuba - those were offensive missiles in Cuba!

Come on, it's not about Poland altrusitically "defending" "us" (??) from the Russians! What Poland is doing here makes things more dangerous for the rest of Europe.

I would be really interested to know how useful these things would be for actually stopping a missile aimed at a European city rather than the US.

I wouldn't be surprised at all if they are far more effective at defending the US itself than for protecting the suckers who provide sites for tracking radars and missiles guarding the "homeland".:pac:

The Russian establishment is so full of rubbish, it is incredible. It is so difficult to shoot down an incoming missile that all such an anti-missile defence system can be used for is to defend against an attack by a minor power with a very small quantity of missiles using 1940s technology, an attack by Russia would by numbers or uptodate technology overwhelm such a defence system and Russia has both the numbers of missiles and the technology to do either or both together.

    Best and Warm Regards

What was said is that "Poland will be a 1st strike target should there be any aggression" which means the Russians are gonna already have some of their arsenal pointed on them as of today, along with Ukraine and Georgia for either supporting the U.S. or allowing them to help(as in the current South Osseita invasion)

Why the other world leaders havent just come out and told the Russians to get the fu*k off their high horse yet, literally, is beyond comprehension...

Russia clearly have a right to defend themselves. If anything American should be told to **** off their high horse and get the **** out of Europe.

It is an absolute disgrace that Poland and the Czech Republic are allowing such installations on their soil.

Ireland could also be a target for Russian Nukes seeing as there are so many Polish people living here. Willie O Dea needs to to do something, and fast.

The Poles and the Czechs also have every right to defend themselves with any means at their disposal. Both having been screwed rotten by the Russians in the past, neither wishes to be screwed by them again.

Sorry guys, but I reckon Ireland will be one of the first to go if war breaks out. We're in a strategic location as the first port of call for troops coming across from the US, so we would be taken out.

Think it was a very stupid idea for Poland to do this right now. Surely waiting for a bit until things settle between Russia and Georgia.

Why should the world have only one "super-power" anyway? It's a little bit selfish of the US to think they can have everything in the world for thei own use under the guise of "spreading deomcracy". Someone is going to disagree with them, and they'll have to get over it.

And that was my point to Stevek101 also. The Russians are STILL bitter at having lost so much territory that they will still seek to fu*k them over either economically or structurally.

If the Russian government are so worried about ex-patriots in Georgia, why dont they just kill them like they done in Chechnya while blowing the **** out of the place to kill the seperatists there?

Oh apparently the same Russians have decided to call a truce in Georgia and pull out it was just on the news, lets see how long it takes em to get out...

Its extremely naive to think the Americans are doing this to defend the Polish or Czech's or any of us Europeans. It is entirely for their interest. Occupied by the Americans rather than the Russians? Nice one.

In the combined interest of Poland the Czechs and the US. Its called an alliance. Its not an occupation when they are invited in.

Do you really honestly think that the Russian army in Poland would be even remotely comparable to the US army in Poland?

You missed my point. I know its an alliance. I was trying to make the point that its idiotic for them to think its an alliance worth taking part in.

Someone suggested that it was good for them to have such a defence system after everything they've been through with the Russians. All the Americans are going to do is **** them over as well.

    Yes, really.

What about Iraq, Afghanistan, Guantanamo Bay etc etc? Anything bad done by the Americans in these places pales into insignificance when compared to what the Russians have done in the past.

Go and ask a few Poles or Czechs which of the two they would prefer.

Russia has nukes pointed at Dublin. I had a lecturer in UCD that worked in the Clinton administration and said he saw some files that stated this. So we are fvcked if they so wish.
