Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Quiz #3 - Europe (Closed for New Entries)

The point of the game is pretty simple. In a PM to me, answer each of the 10 questions below.

Try to think of the most popular answer, to get the most people matching you. You don't want a unique answer, you have to answer with what you think everyone else will put.

Scoring - It's 5 points per duplicated answer so if 5 people all give the same correct answer then that's 25 points. No matches = 0 points.

If you need to comment or clarify a question then do it in thread please. And if you could reply once you've sent a PM it'd keep the thread alive Thanks!

    JUST LIKE THIS:

    1. Dr Maria O' Brien
    2. Kathy Wells
    ...

The game will end when we have 25 entrants or after 5 days, whichever comes first.

    1. Name a European capital city. (but not Dublin)
    2. Name any military coup in European history.
    3. Name a composer of classical music from Europe.
    4. Name a former country in Europe that no longer exists.
    5. Name a country invaded by Germany during World War II
    6. Name an European car manufacturer.
    7. Name a singer from Europe who sings primarily in a language other than English.
    8. Name a mountain in Europe.
    9. Name an island in Europe. (but not Ireland)
10.Name a war mostly fought in Europe.

For the quiz Europe will be defined by the mostly geographical definition of the word meaning that sountries such as Russia and Turkey are inluded.

I think I really haven't been leaving these open for long enough. I'm still getting answers from people for the "famous females" quiz of last week...

As I said in the OP, the game will end when we have 25 entrants or after 5 days, whichever comes first. But if I get 25 in the first 2 days then I'll probably leave it open an extra day.

What does everyone think about how long I should accept answers for?

It depends on the responses. I think you should go for a numerical value rather than a chronological target (i.e. a set number of replies rather than a set number of days/hours). It's unfortunate for people who miss out due to not checking the forum, but thems the breaks. Obviously if you get 15-20 in the first hour or 2 then you can set a higher target for the number of entrants.

Cheers for organising them by the way. Great idea and a breath of fresh air in a forum that doesn't get as much traffic as it deserves.

    Well done.

I had difficulty with question 2 too. I'll be interested to see the answers. I suspect that many of the answers given will be not actually be coups d'etat.

I'm there, need a good come back here after a miserable US quiz but good ladies quiz.

Whatever you say goes Ponster, you're the man. Best idea for a quiz in a long time, every answer has the potential to be correct!!!

If you do get board doing them then I think maybe the winner of every quiz should have to come up with the next one!!!

Thanks for all the support folks...

I've got about 10 quizes ready to post but if anyone ever fancies submitting my 10 questions (there doesn't have to be a theme) then I'll post them and do the counting-score work.

As for question 2, yeah, some people are giving answers that I wouldn't consider to be coups but I doubt those people will get any points (their answers probably won't be repeated by someone else). I agree though that this one will be interesting.

At the moment every answer has the potential to be correct. I'll post a quiz for the weekend though where every answer *must* be 100% correct because the aim of the game is to give an answer that no one else gives. This type of quiz is much harder to come up with as the questions can't afford to have any loopholes.

Ok.....Here are the answers for the latest and most difficult quiz so far.

    1. Paris 22
    1. London 10
    1. Vaduz 1

Easy one this, though Vaduz??? :)

    2. French Revolution 5
    2. Munich Putsch 4
    2. Greece 1967
    2. 23-F 1
    2. Battle of Hastings 1
    2. Braga 28th May 1926 1
    2. Bulgaria 1944 1
    2. Carnation Revolution 2
    2. Czech Coup of 1918 1
    2. Gunpowder Plot 1
    2. Irish War of Independence 1
    2. military coup by napoleon bonaparte 1
    2. Mussolini's March on Rome 1
    2. Portugal 1
    2. Romanian revolution of 1989 1
    2. Russian Revoluti 2
    2. Spanish military coup 1923 1
    2. The Carnation Revolution 1
    2. yougoslavia military coup 1

This is the question that caused the most difficulty. There have been loads of military coups in Europe but a lot of people just couldn't seem to think of one. The one I guessed would be most popular was the 1997 coup in Turkey but no one mentioned it! I couldn't accept 'French Revolution' as it wasn't in fact a military coup really, though the answer 'military coup by napoleon bonaparte' was okay as Napolean did launch a coup but it was about a year after the revolution. The 'Battle of Hastings' made me smile :)

    3. Mozart 16
    3. Beethoven 14
    3. Chopin 1
    3. Bach 1
    3. Vivaldi 1

The 2 big guns got most of the votes.

    4. Yugoslavia 14
    4. Czechoslovakia 13
    4. Prussia 3
    4. East Germany 1
    4. The Soviet Union 1
    4. West Germany 1

Only one person said 'East Germany' !

    5. France 11
    5. Poland 20
    5. Austria 2

    6. VW 10
    6. BMW 6
    6. Daimler-Mercedes 5
    6. Renault 3
    6. Fiat 3
    6. citron 1
    6. Ferarri 1
    6. Ford 1
    6. Koenigsegg 1
    6. Peugeot 1
    6. Seat 1

Another one with a large spread of answers. I lumped those who said Mercedes, Daimler and Daimler-Mercedes together. I'm not too sure if the person who put 'Koenigsegg' understood the point of the game :)

    7. Pavarotti 7
    7. Edith Piaf 6
    7. Julio Iglesias 6
    7. Alizeé 1
    7. Billie Holiday 1
    7. Bjork 1
    7. Boticelli 1
    7. Carla Bruni 1
    7. Emile Simon 1
    7. Enya 2
    7. Loreta Lynn 1
    7. Mano Chao 1
    7. Noir Désir 1
    7. paolo conte 1
    7. Placcido Domingo 1
    7. Vanessa Paradis 1

    RIP Pavarotti

    8. Mont Blanc 20
    8. Alps 4
    8. Matterhorn 4
    8. Mount Etna 2
    8. Ben Nevis 1
    8. Carrauntoohill 1
    8. Mount Brandon (Kerry ) 1

I was unable to accept 'Alps' as an aswer as I asked to name a mountain, not a mountain range.

    9. Great Britain 6
    9. Malta 6
    9. Sicily 5
    9. Iceland 3
    9. Corsica 2
    9. Cyprus 1
    9. England 1
    9. Faroe Islands 1
    9. Greece 1
    9. Greenland 1
    9. Ibiza 2
    9. Isle of man 1
    9. United Kingdom 3
    9. United Kingdom 2
    9. United Kingdom 3

The United Kingdom isn't an island folks :)

    10. WWII 18
    10. WW I 12
    10. Crimean War 2
    10. Franco-Prussian War 1
