Wherabouts in Roscommon if you don't mind me asking? I've spent plenty of time at rivers and lakes in Roscommon but never been lucky enough to see one :o

They were in a puddle in a swampy area the mayo side of Castlerea.

The actual spot is located on the Railway, so off limits to the public.

I've seen them in bogs also.

Just thought I'd throw up a few photos of the family of swallows that has made their home in our shed over the past few years. The last two were taken last year, and the rest were taken over the past week. I imagine it's the same family that come back year on year? It's strange, but the first year they arrived it seemed that they were far more skittish. The shed is attached to the house, and there were a few times where opening the door resulted in the adults flying into the house and a lot of commotion. This year though, and last year, they seem to be far more relaxed. We wander in and out several times a day and they just sit there watching us. Is it possible that they have become used to our presence, and see us perhap as less of a threat? Or am I just imagining it??

Absolutely, from my experience at my clubs rifle range, swallows become more and more relaxed each year.

We shoot all calibres on the range with the swallows nesting right above our heads, approx 4-5 feet away, even closer in some areas, the report from the firearms doesn’t seem to bother them at all.

At the height of nesting this year, we had 11 nests in the rifle bays, but last year in total, we had 19 nests. :)

I was thinking the same this year actually, especially since they are nesting in our dog kennel:eek:

A five spot burnet moth I believe:
This in Ireland? if so where, we may like to follow this up.

We have 2 species of Burnet moth in Ireland, the widespread six-spot Burnet and the very localised Narrow-bordered five-spot Burnet.

This one appears to have 5 spots, but we have seen 6 spot burnet with a spot worn off.

    Dragonfly, not sure what type:
Fairly sure this is a Common Darter, recently emerged

There was one spotted at Boora on June 24th. It was part of an organised trip by the National Biodiversity Data Centre and Offaly Naturalist's Field Club so I'm sure it has been reported to the relevant authorities.

Yes Thanks, I'm aware of that sighting of a probable Narrow-bordered five-spot Burnet at Boora

Yeah, I'd never seen it before, this was outside Kinnegad, Westmeath, just across the border in Meath, close to Kildare and Offaly borders.

Kind of better views of the wings in these ones:

    Nice!

There are some Peregrine(s) down in Cork giving amazing views lately! There was one on IrishBirding today, and there have been a couple posted on the BWI FB page in the last week or two - I presume the same birds.
