    Just going through some of last years pictures that I never got round to editing and sorting out - I know I've posted plenty of pics of these species last year, but indulge me :P

    Is that a trout the heron has caught?-- really great series of photos by the way.

    Not sure what species of fly this is - possibly Empis tessellata. I think they're also known as 'assassin' flies because they not only feed on nectar, but will also take smaller insects too. They seem to be particularly fond of Dandelions. If my I.D. is incorrect, I'm sure splish will put me right!;)

    Pictures from the farm.
    My early cover nettle bed for Corncrake. Sprayed with o.5% Roundup last week which killed the scutch grass but does not harm nettles. Added in nettle rhizomes into bare areas.

    I was paying so much attention to the Moorhen that I almost missed this Kingfisher which had perched on a branch not far away to my left. I got a few shots off before it scarpered.

    Was doing my usual walk in Lucan Demesne today when I heard 'the spash'.
    Hoping it was a kingfisher diving, I zoomed in on the area only to find a mink(sorry about the quality- dark area long way away).

    Actually just wondering now if the mallard acted as a decoy.
    As I headed back- just passing the area where I heard the mink enter the water - the female called out and all her chicks joined her jumping(slithering) down from the far bank.
