    Anyone have advise to hand on the best options to activate and de-activate an alarm remotely from my mobile phone.

    Due to have new alarm system installed over the next two weeks and would prefer to have this option.

    Really dont want to have to get a landline installed to do this though.

    If you dont want a land line installed the GSM dialler is the only route, however I believe the GSM dialler should be used only as a backup system for the digi modem (land dialler). Plus at a cost of €400 to €500 euro I think its a lot of money to pay!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 156 ✭✭Genco

    Thanks for posting - 400 is higher than I was quoted for the cost of the panel and keypad :confused: so sounds like thats out.

    What are my options for getting a text to my phone to advise if the alarm has been activated. Again dont have a landline so hopefully there is a workable (ie cheap but reliable) option :)

    I've had good results with the HKC GSM unit. You simply text the panel with your code followed by set, unset, status etc and it does the rest. It comes with an 02 card but you can grt your own pre pay card for it.
    Alternatively if you have wireless broadband and an ATA you could use the pstn digi with blue face or something similar

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 156 ✭✭Genco

    Jnealon have you any idea what the GSM cost when you have installed it ?

    The landline option at less than €100 is pretty cheap but GSM would be preferable if its less than €200.

    Also I have wireless broadband but I have no idea what an ATA is so would appreciate further info. if you can point me in the right direction pls :o

    The GSM units are expensive, prices mentioned in previous posts would not be too far off the mark.
    It sounds like the ATA is the way to go. Clicky

    Forget HKC and take a look at the New Europlex Signet a little more expensive but the Signet 200 & 300 have IP as well as GSM & wirless modules. With a web server built in you have full access from your mobile browser as well.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,071 ✭✭✭Jnealon

    I'll second the Signet but make sure you have the latest firmware v1.3. The only thing is that it is not as easy to install the HKC to install

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 188 ✭✭Cadzer

    The HKC Gsm unit is easy to use and the only way set or unset / control the panel from your mobile phone. The land line digi cant proform any set or uset finctions.

    The GSM unit can also be used to trip lights , heat , gates,! If the Gsm is set up and wired into the system.

    I have 1 and its great. I have no land line and have saved money on line rental already.

    Follow the link above go to downloads & technical data sheets
    Its worth it for the IP access alone.

    Both the HKC unit and the Europlex Signet will do the same things like switch on and off the alarm, lights, open gates etc but out of the two the Europlex is probably better as it has X10 plus it's neater looking than the HKC

    The signet would have been the much easier way to go.
    CCTV monitoring is totally seperate from your alarm , this connects directly to your router.

    Koolkid do you work for Europlex or something?:confused:

    I'm 25 years in this job and I can tell you the Signet is a ball of sh*te!
    It's riddled with software issues and still is.... maybe the one you bought you were lucky, but believe me I've removed over a dozen of them last year alone.
    If its so great, why haven't they made their own sensors????
    Using another company's radio card and sensors, come on like!:eek:

    Visonic can offer X10, remote dial-in, SMS via GSM, Arm disarm by text, IP signalling, to name but a few.
    (How do you think Eroplex came up with the IP idea???)
    :mad:

    And BTW, CCTV doesn't have to be separate from the alarm.... Have you not heard of the ATS panel from Aritech? (Or is that out of your league?)

    I'm in the business 20+ years also which is irrelevant here as the Signet is a new panel. I have installed loads so I must be very lucky I guess

    Using another company's radio card and sensors, come on like!:eek:
    How is this relevent to anything. I use Aritech or Astec sensors all the time on HKC. Its personal preference & ease of use.

    And BTW, CCTV doesn't have to be separate from the alarm.... Have you not heard of the ATS panel from Aritech? (Or is that out of your league?)
    Yes I have heard of (and used) Aritech ATS panel. Hardly suitable for the OPs application. Why would it be out of my league? Its fairly straightforward dont you agree?

    Got myself a grandstream handytone-486 ( ATA ) and signed up with blueface for voip and connected this to my astec 49DV at the weekend and it's working fine, did 6 tests calls from it yesterday and all worked, it also works by ringing the 2nd or 3rd number in my alarm contact list if the previous number did not answer.

    The grandstream only cost me €50

    Debate is great lads, but let's watch for potential flaming matches, you never know how someone will take a typed comment.

    It would be best to keep things focused on the OP.

    Hi All,

    I have an existing HKC alarm system (probably HKC SW812 ) and I've just purchased a HKC GSM dialer ( GSM-P €300+vat) and I'm looking for some assistance with connecting this to the alarm panel. Hopefully somebody here can help.

    1/ I don't need to isolate power to the main panel. Is this correct?
    2/ Is the 4-core ribbon cable required as I don't have one?
    3/ Is the ribbon cable just used to configure the GSM module and can then be removed?
    4/ The GSM module can use up to 500mW. Do I need a 1amp PSU?
    5/ Any other tips?

    Thanks all.

    You should always switch off the mains power before opening the panel
    proteus wrote: »
    2/ Is the 4-core ribbon cable required as I don't have one?
    It should come with the dialler as well as the mounting clips
    proteus wrote: »

    When you say GSM unit do you mean the text dialler
    proteus wrote: »

    again do you mean text dialler? If so No.
    If you mean a seperate GSM dialler then yes for that currant consumption

    Thanks all.

    If you didn't get the ribbon cable then you would need the 2 plug on cards, one for the digi and one for the panel. You then run 4 core cable between the two and you will also need to run 12vdc

    That was the source of confusion, It didn't come with the RS485 comms cards. I had to follow up with the supplier for these.

    I can disconnect the mains power for the alarm panel. I take it that I need to keep the battery power to prevent the settings being lost. Is there any problem just plugging the RS485 modules into the main panel while there is still battery power connected, any order they need to be plugged in?

    The (aux)(SW8-12) 12v connectors on the main panel already have connections in them. What could these be and if they were disconnected while connecting the GSM panel could this cause problems?

    Thanks again.

    Ok you have it wired in you need to wire it in series. this is the simple way to wire it.

    you have 6 wiring terminals.

    1=red
    2=black
    3=Blue
    4=yellow
    5=wire link between 5 and six
    6=above.

    thats the easy way note terminal 1 is closest to the shock and 6 is beside the tamper switch.

    Just in case its a loop & you are using 2 cables then its
    1=red
    2=black
    3=Blue
    4=Blue
    5=black
    6=red
    And join both yellows together.

    Im in the market for an alarm system also. I dont want to hijack the thread but can anyone recommend a system capable of text from phone, ethernet and ip camera monitoring online? X10 would be nice for the future. Signet looked like a good system but some of the negative feedback has me confused. I want something reliable and future proof.

  • Moderators, Home & Garden Moderators, Technology & Internet Moderators Posts: 24,789 Mod ✭✭✭✭KoolKid

    I havn't found any problems with SigNet.. Whats the negetive feedback your getting.
    Astec Fusion R&D dept are working on all that at the moment.
    Release date is June / July but thats being optimistic IMO
    But they are definitly future profing the system

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,071 ✭✭✭Jnealon

    The signet ticks most of your boxes.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 506 ✭✭✭construct06

    Hey guys have that gsmart gsm alarm transmitter and receiver still if anyone is interested, I never installed it.

    I have hkc alarm system aswell and I'm thinking of linking that with lights, gates, garage doors, heating and CCTV with an x10 system controllable via web, specifically iPhone.

    The signet system mentioned appears to best, is this still the case....?

    The SigNET would be my recommendation for this.
    The big advantage here as opposed to running independent software is that the web server is built into the SigNET 220 & 300 so there is no need to have a PC running for remote access. Also what can be done using cause & effect with the alarm zones is almost limitless.

    Currrently have HKC alarm (SW-812) which sends texts to 5 numbers when activated. It is connected directly to our fixed landline (Eircom). It was part of the package when we got the alrm installed in the house.

    However we wish now to get rid of Eircom (for phone and BB) and sign up to UPC which I think will have an effect on whether the alarm notification will work.(as their phoneline is not similar to Eircom)

    I have heard of being able to add a GSM dialler to our system instead of the fixed line version (modem?)?

    Has anyone any info on what is need and how much it would cost to switch between fixed line and GSM dialler.

  • Moderators, Home & Garden Moderators, Technology & Internet Moderators Posts: 24,789 Mod ✭✭✭✭KoolKid

    You can add on a GSM digi which would be able to text you. You could also connect a generic voice dallier which could connect to your UPC line.
    There are some vulnerabilities with both.
    GSM signals can be easily jammed.
    UPC lines are dependent on mains power being on.

    That is correct as the HKC text card wont work with UPC.
    The HKC GSM-P costs 320 Euro to buy, it is very easy to set up on the alarm system once you have the engineer code. It will also allow you have remote access for setting/unsetting of the alarm. It will allow you put up to 19 phone numbers into it, the same as the text card you already have.

    Is the HKC GSM-P a replacement card (inside control box) or is it a stand alone part/unit which needs to be mounted outside the main panel (beige box - not the keypad)??

    €320 to buy (pricey!), how much usually for a all-in cost (incl. fitting)? Need to do some maths on the pay off time before jumping in :)

    Main reason of thought of change is the ability to switch to UPC phone and BB instead of paying Eircom rental every month and being stuck with pricey sub-standard phone-line BB.

    It is mounted outside the control panel. It comes with two plug on cards that a 6 core cable is connected too so it can communicate with the control panel. Depending on where the best signal is for the unit, it makes it an easy install. The new HKC GSM for the Securewave panel will be a plug on card, it is out in August.

    320 Euro for the GSM-P is the best price I have seen in the suppliers, some charge more :eek: Shop around is always the best option as prices can vary when getting any job done on your alarm system.

    is it possible to monitor two panels with one gsmp?????? i am building a new garage to park cars in. i have a 8/12 securewatch in house already. as i am putting in electric doors in garage. i dont want to have to unset the panel manually everytime before i drive into it. so was thinking of putting securewave in new garage and getting keyfob. can my gsmp monitor both buildings or is there a
    cheaper way out of this problem.

    It wont work with the two panels. What you could do is add a quick bridge to your existing alarm and this will allow you add a keyfob to the system.

    how does that work and how much are we talking. i know i could text to disarm but overall cost would not be worth it. is it like adding wireless to my 8/12 panel????

    A quick bridge is about €100, two button keyfob about €50. Rough prices only.
    If you contact the suppliers here they will give you a direct price for the components you need.

    Yes it is but you will need a free zone to be able to add this plus the engineer code to set up the zone correctly.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 36 stoneyxox

    yes i have access as i installed myself. what does it involve, does the quickbridge just turn off the one zone or the whole panel will i still need to turn off when i enter house. can i turn off two zones with it? where is it mounted in panel or in garage? was just going to put up pir in garage and also cover doors and windows. can i do this?? also can i run two keyfobs with it? your help is much apprieciated altor. thank you.....
