    Let me get this straight.

NRA want to build a road.
They get CCC to do the CPO and the land is in CCC's name.
NRA are not ready to do the road but they don't want the land disposed of.

So basically the taxpayers of Cork County own land they don't have control of and can't make money off it - the government should force NRA to rent this land from the Local Authority until such time as they are ready to build to give them an incentive to get on with it.

I for one am delighted this sorry mess has come to a head, this has been festering for years and now finally the idiotic situation where three branches of the state will only communicate to each other via a fourth has come to light

But the rights and wrongs of who planned what where, and who they told and when, and whose ball was it and they were going home with it anyway, are secondary to a couple of facts:

Irish Rail own a perfectly good site to build this Park and Ride a couple of hundred metres east of the current one.

The Dunkettle Interchange would be extremely difficult to upgrade without this site.

Access from the east (N25), and egress to the North (M8) from the proposed (now rejected) Park and Ride would have been pitiful without the junction upgrade. So it was going to be awkward to use for its main catchments.

Three years have been lost chasing this option, if IE have any commitment to this project they will take up the North Esk option, and it will sail through the planning.

It was also suggested there was up to four other sites nearby which would be equally suitable for a railway station along with a park and ride facility.

This sums it up perfectly. A P&R tacked onto the Dunkettle junction was always a ridiculous idea. There are far better places for it. Look to the container yard just down the road for a much better place, or the Tivoli docks if they ever get moved.

The NRA would have granted aided the purchase of the land.
