Overheard in Changing Rooms

Whilst in a large department store recently I overheard a conversation between what sounded like a grandmother and grandchild. Now, I was not eavesdropping, the grandmother had a loud voice and I had taken off my headphones.

The loud voice was describing how lovely the clothes were... if only the child wasn't so fat . Now, the child sounded about 10, not a lot of words just pained moans. Poor child, imagine your granny shouting that at you in a changing room, loud enough for others to hear. Not just one comment either, she made a few, including "it's just a pity you have all that weight on you" and "now, if I get this for you will you try to down down the weight a bit?" (Sounds like older generation speak, "the weight")

I know there is an obesity issue these days with children but I remember in my day adults were warned against making comments about a childs size for fear of them developing an eating disorder. have we swung too far in the opposite direction?

If Pighead were the fat kid he would grabbed Granny by her stinking blouse and whispered into her decrepit old ears "Pighead may be fat but you will be dead in no less no more than 7 years time, and the maggots shall feast on your decaying rotten corpse until they too become fat and their clothes can't fit them"

Its awful isnt it..I have a cousin, she is 11...a gorgoeus little thing, is seriously gonna be a stunner..she has put on a little bit of weight..and looks fab for it (she was always really slim)..I mean...she actually looks brillaint.

At her younger sister communion a couple of months ago her granny was going on and on and on about her "weight" and saying to my cousin how she was fat..felt like killing her..I mean come on!! Just coz your old doesnt mean you can say what you fricken want!!! She'll give the child a complex :(

Since low self esteem is a factor in many eating disorders, that granny should be shot.

The aim with a 10yr old should be to keep the weight steady until the growth catches up, not make them feel ugly.

    Cow.

I think it's fashionable to slag the overweight again, apparently they're super unhealthy fatties and worse than Hitler. :pac:

Listen Lady E grannies have a right to say whatever they want to youngsters. Grannys have lived through wars, recessions and numerous different establishments. Youngsters have lived through Britney, Barney and Ra Ra skirts. If Granny says the wee ones a chubbster then it's probably best to take the advice on its merits and do something about it. Respect your Elders Miss E..

I didn't see the child at all, they left before I did, but I do agree that it's a sensitive issue.

I know two little girls (won't say how they're related to me for identification purposes) they're the same age, just a few days apart, and one of them I can easily carry around town on my hip for an hour, the other one I can't even lift very far off the ground.

But I don't think public humiliation is ever a good way to go. Unless you're an adult and you've signed up for The Biggest Loser.

The kiddo should have given her granny a swift kick to the growler tbh.

I'm saving that for the next time my granny asks me why I don't 'do something nice about my hair.....?'

A lot of parents these days excercising and dieting their children, we'll see how it all turns out in a few years. How many beds are ther for eating disorders?

My granny was like that but she didn't mean it in a bad way, she would always praise me and my sister if we gained any weight, we were never fat by any means but when we were going though puberty and 'filling out' she would always comment on it saying how great it was.. My mother had to pull her aside one day cause my sister was getting a complex over it.. She meant well though God bless her..

I remember hearing it was lower, although that was a while back.
Knew a girl who was in the process of killing herself but couldn't get proper help at the time.

It's not just old people that are mean. Meaness comes from all ages, and all walks of life. Even handsome looking blokes who post on internet forums can display signs of meanness from time to time. Here let Pighead show you:

HA HA HE HE HE, EMO'S A GINGER!

Strange. All my granny ever did was rejoice in us (myself and my cousins) gaining weight. I thought old people loved chubby kids. Whenever our gran told us we looked great we knew it was time to lose a few pounds. I still rely on her compliments to let me know if I need a few extra gym sessions.....

Count yourself lucky if its just your granny at it.

There are currently only three specialist beds for eating disorders (all based in Dublin) only about one-fifth of those admitted to adult psychiatric units and hospitals with eating disorder diagnoses receive specialist care.
    (bodywhys)

    3?

No, watch any talent show to see how deluded kids can be. They must be told the truth.

Presumably you could fit a good few of the patients into the one bed though.

I was walking through the park the other day with my brother and there was gangs of, young girls / teen girls everywhere and almost all of them were chubby, some of them real big..

He did make a good point that when we were growing up that just wasn't the case. The majority were average weight. We weren't sitting at home all day stuffing our faces playing bloody nintendo's or whatever.. We were out running around getting up to all sorts.

I can see obesity becoming a big problem.

Obesity getting to epic proportions, more people overweight than ever before and continuing to get worse, maybe someone needs to tell our children that they are fat and need to get out for some exercise.
