I read a great quote somewhere that said "the second best feeling in the world for a compulsive gambler is to gamble and lose". I think its very true and anyone who disagrees obviously doesnt have much experience with problem gamblers.

I presume wexford is only joking in this thread because you would want to be a retard saying the stuff he is!!!

    In response to MDWexford....

    Are you for real??

In the poker community the phrases sick gambler, degenerate are bandied about to describe players who quite happily and regularly do all their money... You may also know them as fish etc and the purpose of the game is to play with them, take their money and call them them sick etc when the occasionally suck out on you.

The sad reality of life ( for them ) is that in alot of cases they actually are sick and probably need professional help. The point the programme made ( I'm assuming as I didn't watch it ) was that for these type of people with addictive / compulsive personalities having these machines readily available would be a disaster.

Lads has hanyone here read Declan Lynchs articles on gambling in the Sunday Independent? Very insightful (and funny) stuff. It written by a guy who has dealt with addiction(alcohol) first hand. He also does a good line on completely ripping the piss out of the stiffs on Q & A. Seriously, i've never seen a more dull and Po faced program, especially when they try an lighten the tone.

Md's comments are a bit crass to be fair, and would provoke anyone who has had any insight into addiction. Am sure he has experienced "tilt" in his time playing poker, imagine that being your default state of mind. Saying that an addict is "weak-willed" is just ignorant.

Don't bet on the recession to cure our gambling addicts.

Neither the economic downturn nor closing casinos will solve a global pandemic, writes Declan Lynch.

As you walk down the street of any Irish town, you will note that a lot of places are closing down. And if you make a connection between this and the overall national mood, you might even get the impression that Ireland itself is closing down.

    Except for one thing.

Gambling dens are still opening up, while everything else has been closing down. During a recent stroll down the town of Arklow, for example, I counted nine gambling dens of various kinds, including one which had opened in the last six months. Which is nothing really...

    I disagree.

I sports bet and back horses regularly and have a decent knowledge of both, im never ever happy when i lose.

I have no sympathy with your true life example and just think people like that are imbeciles to be honest.

MD, what are you? 12 ???

You should try putting your brain in gear before you start typing. The person Hammertime mentioned is a compulsive gambler with an obvious addiction. There are problem gamblers who are far from imbeciles. Successful business people who somehow have gotten caught up in something they can't control, and can cost them their families, their businesses and in extreme cases their lives.

Get a grip on yourself and have a little compassion. BTW, gamblers with a problem usually start somewhere. It's called sports betting these days. For your own sake, I hope you don't go down this road.

edit: I had to post before I read the rest of the thread. And this is one where it's hard to NOT attack the poster.

QFT. I think you're comments are way OTT Mick and very out of character for you.
You should realise it's and emotive subject for many people, so a bit of sensitivity should be practiced.

    Wow!

The theory that the psychological rewards of gambling are based on the adrenalin rush that fires to a greater extent on losing than on winning is, I thought, pretty well established and fairly uncontroversial by now(I hope one of the experts such as Hotspur can correct me if I'm wrong about that).
I'm amazed that anyone who takes their poker and gambling seriously is ignorant of it. Its can be a very empowering piece of knowledge once it is understood.

Keep it clean and attack the post not the poster. As someone else said, have a bit of sensitivity for a subject that has affected alot of people's lives, whether they are connected to poker or not.
