Gratifying if you lose, what a tosser.

I hope that I can watch that again, only really got the the tail end of things. The compulsive gambler feels gratified if he loses or wins, loves the playing or taking part. Eh okay.....

    Their ignorance was tilt inducing.

What debate needed was more compulsive gamblers imo. Maybe TJ Cloutier/Mike Matusow would suffice.

AFAIK on some level compulsive gamblers are indeed searching for the emotional release/sensation of losing.

Cheers for that. Just finished tidying up after a local pub tourney. Might have another pint to unwind. Bubbled...66 no match for K8.

with respect wexford your wrong mate, the man is completely accurate in saying that, to many gambling addicts the result (winning or losing) is completely irrelevant to them, I know this as I have very close experience of such a person.

For a true life example; he put about 2k on a horse racing double, first horse won and there was about 6k riding on the second horse at 3/1. He didn't bother to check the result until days later. In his own words "it didn't matter if I won or lost, as I'd just have lost the winnings that day anyway".

Thankfully when we confronted him he got help and is now gambling free for over a year, his life is still very very difficult though and we have to watch him very closely.

    I disagree.

I sports bet and back horses regularly and have a decent knowledge of both, im never ever happy when i lose.

I have no sympathy with your true life example and just think people like that are imbeciles to be honest.

Both poker players and the general public confuse poker with gambling.

Thats a very ignorant opinion, and again a completely bizarre statement on a topic you obviously know nothing about.

You have failed to see the point here which is you are not a compulsive gambler.

Comparing your actions to the actions of one is akin to an alcoholic being compared to a nun who drinks a glass of sherry each night.

Just because you know someone who sounds like a degen does not make you an expert on the subject.

Why is my opinion ignorant, because i dont agree with you or because i think people like that are scum??

The way the guy on TV said it was that people are going to be playing these fixed odds terminals and wont care whether they win or lose as long as they get a bit of a buzz out of it which in the case of the majority of people is complete boll*x.

    are you for real ?

You think someone is "scum" because they gamble their money on horses or suchlike? You seriously need to extract your head from your arse and educate yourself to the real world.

If a gambling addict is "scum" I presume you'd throw them in with rapists, theives and child abusers and throw away the key?

    Grow up you idiot.

    Yes.

No i think people who spend all their families food money on gambling or people who do 2k doubles and dont check the results for several days are either scum or mentally retarded. People who back in moderation such as myself are fine upstanding pillars of the community.

Idiot comment is a ban for you i presume. gl with that.

    These

Pretty much just video roulette/bingo/rubbish machines

    families food money?

where does your presumption (which is wrong again) come from?

As for a ban, why don't you be a good little boy and report it, seems about your level.

I think you need to move out of the sheltered area you have been living in and get some real life experience.
There are people out there who use drugs, alcohol and gambling for kicks, every so often a person who is introduced to one of these things develops an uncontrollable desire to experience the buzz for as long and as often as they can. Its called addiction, and with extreme levels of addiction, all cares in the world go out the window and the drugs, alcohol or gambling completely takes over that persons life to such an extent that they cannot think about anything else. I've seen people with serious addictions in all these forms and they have the best of intentions but as soon as they get within a certain proximity of attaining their fix, all these good intentions are forgotten. Its a horrible life for most of these people, as they feel guilty all the time but cannot help themselves. Some are lucky enough to seek help and end up becoming successful in their lives again.
To call someone with a serious addiction anything other than pitiful is wrong. You have no clue what you are talking about.
As a matter of fact I would even be inclined to believe from your comments that you might be a problem gambler, maybe not a very seriously addicted one but nevertheless a problem gambler.

I haven't seen the show, will have to wait for it online, but I am firmly of the belief that fixed odds betting terminals should not be allowed into Irish bookmakers.

I'm gonna assume MdWexford is drunk and give him a pass on this one...or strung out on heroin ;)

your lack of empathy is amazing!!!!!!!!

i'll take a ban and all thats comes with it to say u are an ignorant ass hole!!!!!!!!

but believe in what u want but addictions exsist but can be controlled and dealt with whats unfortunate for u is that ignorance is a disease beyond repair for which u will rightly and hopefully painfully suffer for the rest of your life because of...

u need to take that stick from up your behind and wise up my friend..

i wonder were u bullied at school or something because u come across as someone carrying the burden of hate and resentment for some reason..

i understand mods will remove this most likely..but i feel if somebody is to be allowed make a general assumption on people catagorised as having gambling addictions as "scum" he should swallow a little taste of his own s**t...

I read a great quote somewhere that said "the second best feeling in the world for a compulsive gambler is to gamble and lose". I think its very true and anyone who disagrees obviously doesnt have much experience with problem gamblers.

I presume wexford is only joking in this thread because you would want to be a retard saying the stuff he is!!!

    In response to MDWexford....

    Are you for real??

In the poker community the phrases sick gambler, degenerate are bandied about to describe players who quite happily and regularly do all their money... You may also know them as fish etc and the purpose of the game is to play with them, take their money and call them them sick etc when the occasionally suck out on you.

The sad reality of life ( for them ) is that in alot of cases they actually are sick and probably need professional help. The point the programme made ( I'm assuming as I didn't watch it ) was that for these type of people with addictive / compulsive personalities having these machines readily available would be a disaster.

Hammertime and twasantis banned for a week for personal abuse. mdwexford infracted for backseat modding etc.
Enough with the personal digs and so on.

Lads has hanyone here read Declan Lynchs articles on gambling in the Sunday Independent? Very insightful (and funny) stuff. It written by a guy who has dealt with addiction(alcohol) first hand. He also does a good line on completely ripping the piss out of the stiffs on Q & A. Seriously, i've never seen a more dull and Po faced program, especially when they try an lighten the tone.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 365 ✭✭mocata

Md's comments are a bit crass to be fair, and would provoke anyone who has had any insight into addiction. Am sure he has experienced "tilt" in his time playing poker, imagine that being your default state of mind. Saying that an addict is "weak-willed" is just ignorant.

Don't bet on the recession to cure our gambling addicts.

Neither the economic downturn nor closing casinos will solve a global pandemic, writes Declan Lynch.

    Sunday June 29 2008

As you walk down the street of any Irish town, you will note that a lot of places are closing down. And if you make a connection between this and the overall national mood, you might even get the impression that Ireland itself is closing down.

    Except for one thing.

Gambling dens are still opening up, while everything else has been closing down. During a recent stroll down the town of Arklow, for example, I counted nine gambling dens of various kinds, including one which had opened in the last six months. Which is nothing really...

MD, what are you? 12 ???

You should try putting your brain in gear before you start typing. The person Hammertime mentioned is a compulsive gambler with an obvious addiction. There are problem gamblers who are far from imbeciles. Successful business people who somehow have gotten caught up in something they can't control, and can cost them their families, their businesses and in extreme cases their lives.

Get a grip on yourself and have a little compassion. BTW, gamblers with a problem usually start somewhere. It's called sports betting these days. For your own sake, I hope you don't go down this road.

edit: I had to post before I read the rest of the thread. And this is one where it's hard to NOT attack the poster.

    Wow!

The theory that the psychological rewards of gambling are based on the adrenalin rush that fires to a greater extent on losing than on winning is, I thought, pretty well established and fairly uncontroversial by now(I hope one of the experts such as Hotspur can correct me if I'm wrong about that).
I'm amazed that anyone who takes their poker and gambling seriously is ignorant of it. Its can be a very empowering piece of knowledge once it is understood.

Keep it clean and attack the post not the poster. As someone else said, have a bit of sensitivity for a subject that has affected alot of people's lives, whether they are connected to poker or not.
