We were told that we didnt need to bring anything with us, depending on the college tho you may need to bring a copy of your leaving cert results with you. Ring the college and ask id say to be sure.
I went in with natural enough make up and a grey office pants with a white tank top and yellow (lemony) coloured short sleeved cardigan over it. Just a small silver necklace and no other jewellery. Just wanted to look clean , neat and tidy and it seems to have done the trick.

    Congratulations! :D

Im going to do one too, just trying to decide which college.

What college did you go for?

Im just wondering, is it hard to get a job once you finish the course?

Like I have looked up a few job advertisements for beauty therapists, and all say min 2 years experience... how are you supposed to get experience? Do you have to do unpaid work experience, or training or something?

Aw thanks a mill, im actually so happy about it you'd swear I just won an oscar or something! I just really cant wait to start! :D

Im in Cork so I applied to Susan Ryans Beauty School, Its a private college so its pricey but worth taking the loan out for I think! Im nearly 23 now so the fact that I wasnt coming straight from leaving cert helped I think. She said that they wait on results before making a decision for people coming from school. Also that its great having people who are mature and enthuastic applying.

Depending on all this recession bizz I dont really know how hard or easy its gonna be to get a job afterwards, apparently Beauty Therapy and similar industries havent been hugely hit so far, I may be wrong.

Minimum 2 years experience? God if thats true then anyone coming out of college are gonna be screwed!!
I called a few beauty salons and spa's in my area here to see if they take people straight from the course once completed and anyone iv spoken to has said that yes they take them and its a highly recognised course so I think Il be ok, hopefully!

ya give a few a ring , they were really helpful and nice when I asked anyway. :)

Its great that its not a full time day course isnt it? theres lots of different options so its more do-able when working etc.
Im working full time (trying to pay for half of the fees ) so im gonna do it by night, apparently lots of study to do but when its only for one year I dont mind, just gonna work my a** off :D

yea same here, im just gone 23 too, im not old enough to go as mature student, so have to pay the fees...

but i wouldnt be able to go back to being a full time student with a part time job anyway, the drop in wages would kill me

yea it will be tough goin, especially getting models to practise on and stuff

a friend of mine is 25 and still has to pay the same fees as me, in the private ones I dont think it matters what age you are unfortunately! :(
Also we were told yesterday that we wont need models until the end of yr for the exams , we'l need one model then for 3 days.
All other practice is done on each other in class which is handy! Oh we'l be soo groomed!! ;)

    Well done ladies!

    Let the work begin!!

The A&P side is equivalent to first years nursing and I think that this is the most shocking thing for most people who do beauty therapy. It is hard work but well worth it.

And although all colleges are different I assume that you will work on each other during the year and you will actually need a model per governing board exam, so if you are doing ITEC and CIBTAC you will need a minimum of two models as you would be waxing both so can't recycle them :D

I love doing both my beauty therapy and also the massage year I went on to do though..hard work, but worth it!

    hey girls,

Just wondering if anyone has any updates on the courses they did - if they were happy with the training and whether or not they gained work after?

I did beauty therapy for 2 years in SCD full time and would recommend it to anyone.

I thoroughly enjoyed the course..all the products are professional like the 1s you would use working in a salon..Dermalogica, Thalgo, Decleor, Matis etc

After 2 years I came out with a CIDESCO + CIBTAC Beauty and Body therapy diploma. I also have diplomas in electrolysis, aromatherapy, reflexology, advanced waxing, gel nails, ear piercing and endermologie...all from just 2 years.

I already had a job in a salon before I even started the course because I'm a MUA too but my other friends in the course have mostly all got jobs now in salons :)

    Hi,

Hoping someone can give me some info on courses. The one in SCD sounds great and good for the pocket but i called them and totally booked and 2waiting lists......good luck with that eh!

So called Bronwyn Conroy,so expensive. Is it good does anyone know?

Know Coogan Bergin is meant to be good but someone told me that owner is scary:eek: and also super expensive.....is it worth it?

What kind of money can u expect to earn afterward?Going back at 27 so don`t wanna go into somethng where il be struggling to live. Interested on holistic side of things but told must to beauty therapy first as base.

    Some help would be lovely.

    Thanks

Bronwyn Conroy + Coogan Bergin are both good but extremely expensive and to be honest I think SCD is better (maybe thats just me being biased) but in Bronwyns I hear you even have to bring your own towels + cotton wool which is a little ridiculous! However they're both good schools with high standards + good reputations.

With SCD you do and interview around Jan/Feb to enroll for the following Sept. In SCD in 1st year you do CIBTAC Beauty + body therapy + ITEC reflexology..so 3 diplomas at the end of it. In 2nd year you do CIDESCO Beauty + Body Therapy, ITEC Aromatherapy, CIBTAC Electrolysis, they may also be introducing ITEC laser + IPL into the course next year..you also have the options to do gel nails, spray tanning, advanced waxing + endermologie.

If you want to do Holistic Therapys that NOT true whatsoever about having to do beauty therapy first. For courses like indian head massage, baby massage, aromatherapy, reflexology, acupressure, sports massage, tuina etc you need a prequisite(not sure how to spell that) Anatomy + Physiology/Body Therapy diploma...some Holistic therapy courses like the 2 year one in SCD don't require this as they do it as part of the course. But there are other colleges where you can do a short 6 month A+P course.

Beauty/Holistic Therapists usually start off on minimum wage-€10 per hour..usually after 2 years experience you get offered a better wage...usually along the lines of 23k-25k per annum...the most I've ever heard a beauty therapist on was 35k per annum for a senior therapist..obviously if you progress to management you could be earning more. + tips do help...I used to make up to 50 euro in tips a day when i was in the salon

    Hi,

Thanks so much for getting back to me, really appreciate any info.

So annoying because i do actually want to do the one in SCD as heard only good things, and obviously costwise its better.problem is im being impatient and dont want to wait another year, just want to get started you know. woman i asked in SCD sounded like no hope trying the way waiting list is, she was also the one who told me id need to do the beauty therapy first.

what to do,what to do. really cant afford other ones whilst only workin part time and studying full time. euromillions!?

    Hey

Thanks for all the info, I was in SCD a few years ago studying a different course, I didn't love the place so would be reluctant to go back! In saying that, there does seem to be a vibe on the internet tht it is one of the good places to study beauty therapy. I am also inclined to think that spreading it out over two years is possibly better than packing it into one as the private colleges do.

However, I am thinking of doing this as a career change and want to get work in it asap, so one year may be better in that regard. I went to look in Coogan Bergin, was a bit taken aback that they only have 2 teachers and a small premises and can't quite see where the 6,250 you pay is being spent.

Has anyone been here and what did ye think?

Hey guys!! I'm doing an ITEC Beauty Specialist course and we seem to be having a little bit of bother with regards to our kits... Can I just ask what you all got in yours... because the "wax kit" we were promised was actually just a box of spatulas and an apron... does this sound like we are being ripped off after paying 6000e?

We have complained but they don't seem to be responding to us about it, and all the other courses in other colleges seem to offer 5-600e worth of kits? Any help is very much appreciated!!!!!! xx:)

To be honest the fact that an ITEC course costs so mch money is very suspicious. Most the ITEC courses are in the region of 1,000-1,500 max. I think your college i ripping you off.

When I was in college my Beauty + Body course cost about €400 in SCD, it included all the usual stuff...waxing spatulas, gloves, nail products etc. The kit didn't include a wax pot but there are student rates on them anyway. Half the stuff in your kit never really gets used anyway!
