How are you going to measure it?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 340 ✭✭bwardrop

I'll arrange for it to be measured... if there are any takers!!

    Fair play!!!

But at the same time.... FFS, you guys would start all of this AFTER I started my diet and went from 103.5kg to 99.1. I've still another kilo and a half to lose.

Is it simply going to be the highest % of fat lost?

If so I could defineatly take you on as I probably have way more to begin with

    they/them/theirs

Imo, there needs to be a strict time limit on it, and the winner should be the person who loses the greatest % of their bodyweight in body fat.

Absolutly. Otherwise someone who's as corpulant as my good self stands a much better chance.

You'd really need to do it against someone of a comparable body fat % otherwise your results would be skewed.

How do you intend to measure and over what sort of time frame ?

Where can one get his body fat % measured?

Sounds good to me, any particular conditions etc to be laid down? :)

I would have an interest in this,

8 weeks I reckon, and that has nothing to do with any longer clashing with electric picnic :D:D

Maybe if we got measured and then went and looked at a goal to get it down to,

I have never had mine measured, there has to be a ratio or something that can be used to see who made the best progress. Like Hanley said a percentage of fat lost over bodyweight,

Nothing like a bit of competition to get you working that bit harder :D

Exactly the reason I want in :D

Training hard at the minute, but just want something to push me on a bit more, and this sounds perfect

i dont think that there needs to be any particular guidelines set down as long as we can all get an accurate measure from the get go.

as hanley said it will have to be greatest % of bodweight from bodyfat to keep a fair playing field. im about 12.5%-13% right now. Where are you guys at?

btw anyone who wants to sponsor a prize (say like a million bucks) is more than welcome!!

If I were to guess I'd say 20% , would have been higher 4 weeks ago when I started cutting properly though. pity we didnt start then :(

+1 on the prize...any sponsors more than welcome :D:pac:

as regards the bf% test where do you train? if its out of the way for both of us id be happy enough for us to get it done independently as long as we are honest. if that is the case ill put up progress photos as a form of validation

im in pinnacle on camden st so we are worlds apart. If we set a start date of this weekend to have our bf% and a starting photo that should suffice, yes??

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,985 ✭✭✭pvt.joker

Yep, sounds good. I've never measured bf% before, what would you recommend?

    Tape measure? Calipers?

Gabgab are you in on this too? :)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 133 ✭✭PCB

i only had it done once about 18 months ago. i have been told that callipers is the best method for this. Any advice from anyone on how and where to get this done accurately is welcome:D

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 19,986 ✭✭✭✭mikemac

    Can I join?

Not good but a strong desire to improve.
Oh and beat all of you! :p

Have calipers and can take pics

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 13,497 ✭✭✭✭Dragan

Unless you are all in the same place at the same time getting your % measured there is waaaaaaaay too much room for someone to lie about it.

Not even that, measuring with calipers can lead to different results when done by different people.....also depending on the calculations used.

Personally, i would suggest that you all show up in the same place, have ONE person to measure you up and go off the skin fold readings, rather than the %.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 133 ✭✭PCB

fair enough but lying about it would be pretty pathethic tbh.

id be happy to get it done in pinnacle on sat;)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,985 ✭✭✭pvt.joker

+1 on the lying, it would be pretty pointless really, you'd only be lying to yourself.

His name was in the quote I posted? You could easy have read back up the thread to see who it was even if it wasn't.

I personally couldn't give a damn if you do, I was just pointing out that the offer was there and it was probably going to be the most accurate one you were going to get.

Groovy. There will be more than enough people in there on a Saturday that are trained in such things.

Also, i tend to think people who wink at me are flirting.

Good stuffins. The guy knows his stuff. The comp has great potential once there is a bit of control about it.

Sorry have been busy in work,

Definitely in, but the photo and own measurement thing is no use. Bwardrop is the man for it and I am very grateful to him for his offer of doing it.

I have no idea what I am currently but I am keen to improve, need to pick a start date and an end date. There are plenty of people on here that know what is a good timeframe for this to be manageable,

    Prizes, ha ha good idea!!

Crikey - I was away with work for the day and this has really taken on a life of it's own!!!

Right - I am actually based in WIT (Waterford) and it seems the participants are based in Dublin. Not a problem, we just won't be able to use the DEXA scanner!

I am actually working in Dublin this weekend - all day Friday and Saturday morning in the NAC with some swimmers and then with some footballers somewhere around Santry at Saturday lunchtime. So, I'll be dragging a load of kit with me - a few body comp tools won't add to the load!!

TBH Friday evening would suit me best. Also we would have to restrict it to 5 or 7 weeks as I am working in UL the weekend of the 7th August and am off to Beijing to work from the 23rd August till the 17th Sept. So suggested re-test around the 1st or 15th Aug.

So if - you guys suggest a location and venue for Friday night I'll see what I can do....

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,062 ✭✭✭gabgab

    Hey bwardrop,

I do not know your profession but I am guessing that your **** hot at this, Cheers for the offer to do it and its much appreciated,

%5 weeks of this is plenty if you ask me :D

I will leave the location up to you, you're the one helping us out so just name a spot and I will organise to be there.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 340 ✭✭bwardrop

I'm pretty flexible - will check what times I am in the NAC until (swimmers train at ungodly hours)... Perhaps we could do it there.

If any of the volunteers has a suitable venue - e.g. a gym that doesn't mind me intruding for 30 mins or so that would be great.

Please excuse the following, which may sound like trumpet blowing, but is actually just clarification... I'm an exercise physiologist working in WIT, team physiologist to the Paralympic Council of Ireland and a newly accredited physiologist with the Irish Institute of Sport. I'll be a fair and impartial judge of this challenge!!

Thanks Mickk - Would 6pm on Friday in Pinnacle suit everyone?

Hanley - I am from Dublin and do some work with people in DCU, but I am not based there. I'm off to Beijing for the Paralympics (Olympic Games for people with physical / sensory disabilities).

Coolness... I knew I saw DCU somewhere!! I didn't realise they ran the paralympics at the same time as the summer games. Nick Slater (paralympic powerlifter) is a total bada$$.

That will now conclude my off topic ramblings!!

I am finished work in town at 6 so I will shoot across at that time and be there for just after. If someone can go ahead of me so I am not holding up proceedings or I will see if I can get out early,

    Thanks
