Dyslexia on the internet

I'm seeing a lot of people around the net using dyslexia as an excuse for their textspeak.

I'm just wondering if there are any dyslexic people here, if so, is it possible that textspeak can be caused by dyslexia?

It's an insult to those who genuinely suffer from dyslexia.

There's a few dyslexic people on Boards who have never posted a word of text speak.

If anything, it's the fact that these kids are using text speak so often they forget how to spell things properly which is solely because they're retarded.

Yeah, I doubt that half the people claiming to have dyslexia, really do have it. Just as an excuse for tosserness from what I can gather.

I know a few dyslexic people and their writing is far superior to any text speak. The odd two letters switched the wrong way around in a word is about par. Text speak isn't a sign of dyslexia, it's a sign of the retardation of the human race.

I have dyslexia and I never use text speak it defeats the point of trying to communicate clearly, I do use fire fox 2 with the spell check but there at still times esp when I am stressed and/or tired I still slip up.

I have dyslexia. The more common way is that if someone says numbers, I can sometimes jumble up the numbers in my head. I have managed it by asking people to slow down. I would be guilty of using cos instead of because on occasion, but people who use dyslexia as an excuse, I would be highly suspiceous, especially when you consider how difficult some text speak can be to comprehend to the untrained eye.

    grow up!

Dyslexia can be very frustrating sometimes, I once mis read an exam question and gave a completly different answer to the one that was expected, it was perfect for the "correct" question. :o:mad:

Never seen the need for textspeak!

I believe I'm still legally recognised as a child, so even if I did act mature, it wouldn't be recognised. :(

Might as well act the part. :pac:

Dyslexics tend to watch their spelling more closely than others, because sometimes (usually when stressed) we can forget what the letter is supposed to look like.

    father has it.

    Particularly with numbers it shows.

A friend of mine is dyslexic and says the same, he reckons because he spends that little bit more time composing he's a better writer for it.
Could be an issue in exams.

Txtspkrs on the other hand, after their inane rantings have been deciphered, write so quickly that what actually gets written down has bypassed the whole intelligent processing areas of the brain in which these individuals are already deficient. Mbwahh :D.

My best friend has dyslexia and although he as difficulty spelling some things, he never uses text speak. It's a bit of a stupid excuse really!

A bit pointless these days, with predictive text etc

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 28,789 ✭✭✭✭ScumLord

I have mild deslopsika, I hate text speak, don't understand it at all. Trying to read it jumbles me brain and I go into convulsions on the ground. I even go as far as using proper English in texts.

Using forums like these has improved my writing ability's way more than schoolin' ever did. Always have to spell check before submitting though.

True predictive text makes it easier to spell the words correctly (I still don't like predictive text though) but the big problem with texting is the 160 character limit so I can understand the use of it in text messages. The moment you lose that character limit there is no justification for using it.

Loads of people who use text speak can't use predictive text. I can't understand how text speak is easier to write than proper English!

I'm dyslexic, as is my daughter. And no, txt spk doesn't help 1 bit.

E-mail will kill sms soon enough.

The problem is that txtspk is now a culture thing like the deliberate fu<ktard speak of the chavs.

I know it's horrible. I wish it was confined solely to chavs but it seems most younger people seem to use it.

Yup, realised that after I posted. I can't read my 17 year old brother's bebo page.

I know of this all too well, particularly in the gaming community where I frown on it's usage [i.e. - '1337' speak] - just makes said user look stupid.

I also hate the fact a lot of people are bad spellers, and blame Dyslexia for it. That's not the case, it's just that they are literarily challenged in the sense of being too lazy to brush up their spelling and grammar.

Is that dyscalculia you have? i.e. dyslexia to do with numbers. I taught accounting and finance to a student with severe dyscalculia for a year in a previous job. It was really really difficult :) Was so proud when she passed her exams!

She couldn't really say anything with the gag on but judging from the screams and blood I'd imagine it was a little too big.

Yep, it is. It is so frustrating - for college assignments have to be so careful when referencing as well.

That bebo page is not the worst of them unfortunately!

What I find weird about text speak is a lot of the time people actually use the same amount of letters or more than they would if they'd spelled it write.

What's the point of 'gothz' instead of 'goths'?

I read through this thread and just a few points to be made here.
I have dyslexia too and have been counsiling for it for about six months and helped me an alot.
Why is it that the likes of us suffer from dyslexia gets a bad name for it?
    EG.
    A retard
    A chav
    stupid
    etc.IMO.
thank god for the computers invention,Hence the keyboard as i dont need to write no more.

I also have dyslexia and it realy makes me realy concentrate on what I am writhing so a lot of time I make more sense in my e-mails then someone who just types an e-mail realy quickly.

I never use text speak and find it realy annoying. I take ages for me to send a text. The predictive text obviously only works when you spell a word correctly and being realy self conscious about my spelling I wont send the message if I can’t get the spelling right.

I do sometimes select the wrong word from the suggested spellings list though, which can be realy confusing for whoever has to read what I have written, and always get my (there / their), (which / witch) and (buy / by / bye) mixed up.

Dyslexia is a pain in the ass.

I've never heard anyone being derogatory with regards to those with dyslexia, perhaps back 20-30 years ago when teachers/parents weren't so aware of it and just thought there was something wrong with the person (i.e mental disability) rather than just trouble with reading/writing.

Only those who go around using outright text speak get called things such as a retard, chav etc imo, and they fully deserve it as they've full keyboards infront of them yet they harp on with their "I wnt 2 d shp 2day c u l8r m8".
