I'm seeing a lot of people around the net using dyslexia as an excuse for their textspeak.

I'm just wondering if there are any dyslexic people here, if so, is it possible that textspeak can be caused by dyslexia?

What I find weird about text speak is a lot of the time people actually use the same amount of letters or more than they would if they'd spelled it write.

I read through this thread and just a few points to be made here.
I have dyslexia too and have been counsiling for it for about six months and helped me an alot.
Why is it that the likes of us suffer from dyslexia gets a bad name for it?
EG.

A chav
stupid
etc.IMO.

I also have dyslexia and it realy makes me realy concentrate on what I am writhing so a lot of time I make more sense in my e-mails then someone who just types an e-mail realy quickly.

I never use text speak and find it realy annoying. I take ages for me to send a text. The predictive text obviously only works when you spell a word correctly and being realy self conscious about my spelling I wont send the message if I can’t get the spelling right.

I do sometimes select the wrong word from the suggested spellings list though, which can be realy confusing for whoever has to read what I have written, and always get my (there / their), (which / witch) and (buy / by / bye) mixed up.

Dyslexia is a pain in the ass.

I've never heard anyone being derogatory with regards to those with dyslexia, perhaps back 20-30 years ago when teachers/parents weren't so aware of it and just thought there was something wrong with the person (i.e mental disability) rather than just trouble with reading/writing.

Only those who go around using outright text speak get called things such as a retard, chav etc imo, and they fully deserve it as they've full keyboards infront of them yet they harp on with their "I wnt 2 d shp 2day c u l8r m8".

i get your meaning now,its the text speak are called these things,as alot of rules on the forums rather not wanting text speak here which is understandable.
What i find must difficult is all the long words used and i have to look up the dictonary too find out what it means and its so damn annoying for me.
All this is down to reading which i never do.
I find reading books is boring and trying to understand all those difficult words puts me right off reading.
As for Text speak,
I dont or ever use it as it would confuse me even more!

In all fairness, if some one has a dyscalculia maybe they should consider a careers other than accounting. While she will be able to do it over time it's such a strain it hardly seems worth it.

I don't think it's fair to call it a disability. Dyslexic brains often excel in other areas. When the brain is configured to operate great in one area it can fail miserably in other areas.

Dyslexia is definitely a learning disability and can cause enormous frustration in the often very bright sufferer. I see it every day. Most children (and adults) cope very well after making adjustments and learning strategies to deal with it, others need more intensive and constant help.

Its true to say that people with dyslexia often are particulary talented or quick in some other way, often, in my experience, with art, and again with maths. Perhaps we should think of people with dyslexia as differently abled, if that makes sense...:)

My point was you can tell the difference, dyslexia does not cause people to write crap like txtspk and chav.

Dyslexia means you mix up the letters
It doesn't mean you use less letters or different ones - or complete bastardisations of words like in txt speak.

Dyslexia

According to a researcher (sic) at Cambridge University, it doesn't matter in what order the letters in a word are, the only important thing is that the first and last letter be at the right place. The rest can be a total mess and you can still read it without problem. This is because the human mind does not read every letter by itself but the word as a whole.

A few of my mates are dyslexic. They are among the most intelligent and creative people I know.

I don't think dyslexia can be compared in any way with 'retarded'.
