    You off the road now?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 14,277 ✭✭✭✭Rb

I have 0, and I intend to keep it that way.

Good job clocking up 12 though, you'd have to be a pretty awful driver to do that. Lets hope your insurance takes another hike,eh?

I drive quite a lot and have no points (yet!!)....I really think some people are just unlucky though. Like getting points for doing 55 in a 50 mile limit or something like that, bit out of order?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 81,220 ✭✭✭✭biko

Got two points for speeding, and €80 fine. Will be up at Christmas.

Why is that out of order?

    It's speeding.

That kind of attitude is why we have so many road accidents and deaths.

Like me! Got 2 on the N3 last week, outside the county club where it goes from 100 to 60 and then 50, got caught a the edge of the 50 and I'm usually very careful, annoying thing was the car ahead of me and the car behind me were doing same speed and we all stopped but he came over to me :(

But at least it's just 2, would not like to get anymore!

Pretty awful driver could well be used to describe someone on maybe 8 points.
The op was on 10, and managed to get another 2 to put himself off the road ? Sheer [insert appropriate word].

Was reading recently about some country where your car's taken away if you're caught driving drunk or stoned.

you serious? you might change your mind if you're ever caught slightly over the limit, i dont condone speeding but sometimes you go over 50 very easily or dont slow down quickly enough,

So i think the system is very fair, repeat offenders eventally get punished and it's a warning for others

Driving at 55mph on a main road does not lead to accidents and deaths.
The places on the roads where you see fixed speed cameras and mobile garda speed guns and gatso vans - are all places where there are very few accidents and very few fatal accidents.

+ 1 the place where I was caught is the only spot on the N3 between Navan and Blanch that is not a 100 limit, easy money in terms of fines, never been an accident there

Not saying I didnt deserve it but surely the people doing 120/130 on the rest of the road are more dangerous

None here either. I was going to the airport the other day and passed a speed camera, looked down at the spedo and was bang on the limit. Happy days :)

Just because you've never witnessed it doesn't mean it hasn't happened. That's actually a very famous excuse I've heard while in the car with somebody who's speeding.

    Also, mph? Tsk.

Ok, I won't even ask you for statistics and figures, just give me ONE example of when it happened. Your stating that it does happen and that I have not witnessed it. When did it happen. Location, date, time of the traffic accident and your evidence to link the cause of the accident to the speed of one or both of the cars involved in this particular incident.
I'll measure speed in whatever units I see fit to measure it in. It's great to be able to think for yourself rather than have eu bureaucrats and gay byrne telling you what to think.

Around the corner from John's house outside McSweeney's on May 17, 2006 at 18:34. One car of mass X was at rest while the second car of mass M was travelling at a speed of 88.514 km/h. The two collide and the both form one large mass that travels at a speed of 5 m/s. The deceleration of the second car is 6 m/s^2. Find the time taken.

imo tailgating is the most causes of accidents and deaths.
Speed is also another cause alright but not as high as tailgating.

    totaly agree.
they want to reduce road deaths they need to check for speeding on the sh1t roads not the main ones. going 5mph over the limit is not a big deal either and as stated before tailgating is much more dangerous, but no one ever gets pulled over for that

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 28,128 ✭✭✭✭Mossy Monk

I have to laugh at the people who think it's "ok" to go 5-10kmph over the speed limit. Hopefully each and every one of you racks up your 12 points and is taken off the road, or ends up in a crash and learns the hard way.

If it was ok to go 55/60 on a 50kmph limited road, why isn't the limit increased? These are the laws of our road, if you feel it's ok to break the law then you deserve to be punished as you're engaging in criminal activity by doing so. They're not guidelines, they're laws.

If you can't keep your speed to the limit, go and get a few driving lessons as it's quite obvious that you can't control your car properly and therefore shouldn't be on our roads. "It's easy to go 1 or 2 kmph over the limit", it's f*cking easier to stay under the limit if you can control your car properly.

Anyway, hopefully you'll get the punishment you deserve for breaking our laws, or find out the hard way what speeding does.

I used to drink in the County alot and used to love watching people get done at the Spa. Most nights you'd see 2-3 people get done walking from the Spa and over the bridge.

I've 0 points because I drive like Miss Daisy so thats cool

No, no it's not. The law puts is at 50. If 55 was deemed a safe speed then the speed limit would be 55 and not 55. Of course people would then want to go 60 in a 55 zone.

Not specifically directed at you Clare but if people don't want points then don't break the speed limit. If you can't stay just under 50(or what ever the given limit is) the stay enough under it that you won't go over it. (just to say, that i am not advocating driving at a funeral procession pace, just within the spped limit.)

The faster you are going, the less time you have to make a change in direction, brake, or whatever. If a child walks out in front of you, car pulls into your lane, you have a better chance of not hitting them at a slower speed. So in fact faster speed does kill. However, i would agree with you the careless driving kills as well, speeding is a part of that though.

Speed limits have very little to do with how safe a road is, its whatever the local authority decide on. I live on a tiny road and its perfectly legal to drive 80kph on it yet its also extremely dangerous.
