They are saying it won't be open for upto 8 hours. Really the Gardai or NRA or whoever should have better plans in operation for this sort of thing.

Here's how. I don't know the timescales involved in this accident but it would be something along these lines.

    2:30 - Accident
2:40 - Garda and Ambulance at scene
3:15 - Ambulance leaves scene, Gardaí can begin examining the scene.
8:15 - Gardaí finished examining the scene, Tow truck to remove debris is at the back of a 10km tailback.
10:15 - the towtruck is now in the middle of a 15km tailback.

Nothing to do with planning and everything to do with fucking idiots blocking access along the hard shoulder.

man don't even get me started on that

Nothing annoys me more on a motorway than watching some idiot drive on the hard shoulder.

Its time like that I wish I was a cop so I could stop em and give em the ballocking of a lifetime

    More Idiocy

I was coming back from balbriggan on Friday in the overtaking lane, was at 120kph. (lots of truck in the left lane) some clown in his Saab come up behind me id say close to 160kph and starts flashing his lights. There was no where i could go left lane was jammers and I don't like pulling in in front of trucks as its not fair on the truck drivers as their stopping distance is quite long. he was about 18 inches from my bumper for a 1/4 of a mile

Yeah, hate that all right! Happened to me a lot of times on the M1, so frastrating the other night that, brought my speed to 130 and the idjet followed as 130, and realise I am speeding, so I should break to reduce the speed, well, when I say break just a tiny touch to light up the breaking light, I know to ease off the accelarator will be enough, but just to scare the three color shxxe of the little basxxxd!

TBH the M1 is one of our better roads where speeds above 120 are acceptable, the M7 isn't quite as good, but can take the speeds. I've been overtaken at 140 on the M7 and couldn't see the guy within 30 seconds. Just needs an extra lane really.

I slow down when I'm coming up behind someone in the overtaking lane, but I EXPECT them to move in....some don't get the hint. It's not as if you can't see me in your mirror....oh wait....I'm invisible:rolleyes:

all those cars blocking the hard shoulder for emergency vehicles

Drive up towards the car in front with your right indicator on, for some reason people move over quicker, do they think your part of emergency services or something I dont know, but seems to work :D;)

Tow trucks should have Garda escort to sense of accident.

If a Crane was required to lift an overturned Art lorry, you can beat your ass there would be a Garda Escort as the crowd here in Monaghan do most of the crane lifts on Art lorries for the north east.

You would think that they would try and clear the damage, on one of Irelands busiest roads in time for people heading to work.

It's a good thing that they are now investigating serious accidents properly, however I agree that they should have better contingency plans for traffic management on roads after a major accident happens.

In time when they start to colate the findings from these accident investigations, we might here less of the "Speed Kills" bullsh!t that they are always peddaling, and they might start to give some good advice / education towards better driving skills.

    In an ideal world !!!

Well they can start with a plan on how to manage traffic in these type of events. Not the first time the road has come to a standstill.

If you ever break down on the motorway or have to stop ...make sure you get out of the way of the trucks ...even if it means abandoning your vehicle by climbing over the barriers or up the verge at the side

    That's a small truck:) Not a 40 tonner!

A motorway has a series of exits. An accident occurs between a particular pair of exits. There should be a detailed plan for what to do for an accident at a given location, e.g. diversions, signposting, traffic control, possibly contraflow. Someone called the radio this morning to say that traffic was backing up at Slane as the lights were going through their normal cycle, although there was much more traffic. Plan!!

Don't we have contra flows on that road?

If you seal off a section of the road (fair enough) then open a contra flow?

An accident requiring a section of the road being sealed off surely should have been foreseen and the resultant action (open contra flow) taken immediately to minimise traffic disruption should have been SOP ie planned in advance?

Methinks some sections of this country is still in the 1950's

Reminds me of the t*t that tried to justify not having a barrier installed on the central margin of the M50 due to safety reasons...

Or the NRA that decided we didn't need rest areas/services on our motorways...

We've a long way to go before we join the civilised lads.

On the way in this morning and the truck is still at the scene, great for rubbernecking (says he who took the picture ;)). There was a load of skid marks leading upto where the truck was, so i'd say it would take a bit of working out to see the sequence of events.

Contra flow not possible due to cable barrier.

That bin lorry didn't actually hit anything, it took evasive action to avoid it... ie drove into the ditch.

Traffic yesterday evening was blocked all up all evening on the north bound section due to rubberneckers like yourself. Witnessed a near on 4 car fender bender at 120kph. Idiots.

i find part of the problem is that people dont know another route to where they are going.

Sad but true, and unless they know how to use Sat Nav, it will keep trying to send them back towards the problem, if they are using it.

I arrived from Donabate about 8.10 and saw no traffic at all on the M1 so realised something was wrong. The gardai were there on point duty but the traffic into Swords was very light.

I was on the M1 about a month ago, similar spot to the accident, thick fog so I had the appropriate lights on, noved into the left lane and took my time. I was overtaken by several large artics with all manner of spot/fog lamps travelling too fast IMO. One faded into the distance through the fog, follwed by another which obviously intended to overtake, next a Volvo creased past me at well over 130km/h, with NO fog lights on front or rear.

I knew he would catch up with the trucks and after a second or two the road was lit up with brake lights which swerved all over the shop.

Some people are just idiots !!

I agree about the hard shoulder drivers, deffo throw the book at them.

Unfortunately we may see some additions to the statistics this weekend, so drive carefully everyone !
