    For now

LOL, as long as they don't change the Swick/Davis fight I will be happy.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,923 ✭✭✭Nothingcompares

Cursed is definitely an inferior card to the previous one I'm hoping the undercard will be entertaining as I'm going to be in London for this.

I was rushing to get the credit card out to book tickets for this when Chuck was on the card and thank god my credit card was maxed. The day after Chuck pulled out due to the hamstring tear.
Its a good card but not as impressive as when CHuck was on it.
I think hughes is winding down his career and as he said when he was coaching on TUF,he only has a few fights left in him so cant really see him putting in a great perormance with a view to reclaiming the belt.
The only other fight id be interested in is Davis and swick.

With the exception of the Bisping fight, all the main card fights have potential IMO.

will this be shown live anywhere?

Setanta Sports 1 will show it live. And all UFC PPV's after it too :)

Roll call lads, who's goin to this?

    I am.

I think Davis will beat Swick. I think that Swick is very over rated tbh. Davis could be construed as being over rated too since his win record doent include any big names but he's beaten tough guys and to be fair to him his overall skillset has improved tenfold. I think he has more tools in the bag if a little smaller!

Ill Sky+ it so I can watch it again! PS lets hope if UFC ever makes it to Dublin that a certain promotion dont get it, what would we do without our discussion threads!!

Two more changes: Eddie Sanchez is replacing Neil Wain according to the UFC.com fightcard: http://www.ufc.com/index.cfm?fa=eventDetail.FightCard&eid=1109

And MMAJunkie.com says that Kevin Burns is replacing Ryo Chonan: http://mmajunkie.com/news/4435/kevin-burns-expected-to-replace-ryo-chonan-at-ufc-85.mma

    Why am I not suprised.

Actually Hardonk vs Sanchez could go one of two ways:

    1) they bang it out, its fun while it lasts and Sanchez gets KO'd. Fans get exciting fight.

    2) Sanchez takes it to the ground. Neither fighter are accomplished enough on the ground to really make it exciting. Fight runs risk of turnin into a 3 round lay and pray fest with Sanchez winning. Night gets off to a stinker.

I know Hardonk is a Rickson Gracie Blue Belt but I dont see that being a classic if it hits the ground.

I can see it being B.

With all these changes, they should change the title too: UFC 85 - Cursed

At least with Chuck getting injured there's a good chance that his next fight will be Shogun. I didn't even have half a boner about Liddell - Evans.

why does Sanchez keeping get on the card in UFC... he doesnt seem to have much potential??

He beats people a fair bit. He's definitely got a bit of a name but I don't know, maybe he's cheap.

Hopefully cos he makes a nice punching bag for hardonk. If this fight stays up itll be entertaining, if it hits the ground it could be dreadful

I haven't heard of anything. I think the problem is that Ireland are playing New Zealand in rugby that evening and there'll also be two Euro 2008 games late in the day as well. So that's probably what the sports bars will be showing, not a UFC event which is probably the least appealing UFC show this year

EDIT: Actually, I think the rugby game is in the evening in New Zealand, which makes it the morning here

Try the Mercintile or Fitzsimons .

Im really looking forward to it. I am dissapointed im not going to see Liddel but Hughes will be good to see.

Look for a PPV in Dublin next year.

yea think the portugal turkey match starts at 7:30 on saturday
so doubt they will show the ufc in any pub since most of the barmen dont have a clue what the hell mma is
sure i might catch the last last couple of fights after the football if im lucky

Rugby match is on live 8am/8.30am irish time, perhaps it's being replayed later in the day.

Dunk - there's a ticket going there, buy that and get a flight sure.

Setanta is cheap and from this event I think they've got all of the American UFC events as well, is that right?

I think Bravo still have the Ultimate Fighter Finale in a couple of weeks. I'd assume so anyway, bit of a bitch if they show the full series and don't show who wins!

Looks like it was a great show of fights, despite the abscence of big name fighters. Still
trying to get the Marquardt and Cairneiro fights.

just back from it there now myself, was an awesome show to see live.

the place went pretty mental for bisping, he just destroyed day, poor chap didnt even get started tbh.

great to see chuck out there with wiman, poor fella got swamped when we were leaving, he headed out the same way as the crowd to go sign autograpghs somewhere in the arena and was just hounded by cameras.

all in all was a great experience. half of its a bit of a blur at the moment though, knackered.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 763 ✭✭✭goo

Chuck just leaning over looking at Wiman after the first round was sort of funny.

i was in the o2 myself, actually thought it was fairly ****. i mean, it was good but for a ridiculous amount of money. i don't think i'll travel again to ufc unless i'm with a troop of people. atmosphere for the undercard was non-existent, a lot of meat heads there shouting etc. spent 70% of the time looking at the big screen...

Where were you sitting? I was in the middle tier and the view was amazing. Did have to look up at the screens a couple of times though when the action was on the ground.

    Got back late last night.

Had a great weekend. The event was great, my only problem was the abundance of meathead spastics shouting stupid sh1t and acting like they were MMAs encyclopedia. One lad was actin the know it all and he based his opinion that Alves would beat Hughes based on the time he watched Hughes fight Anderson Silva....... the 2 lads in front of us videotaped every single walk around that the ring girls did..... another fella in the food queue started claimin he could kill most of the fighters as he had training for years in "Chinese boxing" .....sh1t like that. I also had to look at the screens as one of the cameramen was fat and kept gettin in our way when the fighters went to a particular part of the cage.

I did meet Ernesto Hoost, Martin Kampmaan, Bisping and Dana again who (again) told me that they were comin to Ireland next year. He did tell me that last year too though so wait and see.

As for the fights, was suprised they didnt show Sanchez vs Hardonk on TV, was pretty exciting. Matt Wiman looked great, really suprised me, he was excellent on the ground. Kampmaan looked awesome, great to see him back in the cage. Marquardts second foul was harsh but AFIK spiking an opponent is illegal so it balanced out. His indiscipline cost him. Vera stoppage was harsh, especially as it was that particular ref and the punches were hittin hsi arm, howevwer at the same time he wasnt lloking like he was gonna go anywhere so if the round wasnt so close to the finish then he was gonna get stopped anyway...... Davis Swick turned out to be boring, a Mexican wave got into full swing during that one. Bisping looked awesome while Hughes looks like he just has no confidence in himself when standing on 2 feet. I mean pulling guard? All in all a good show.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,803 ✭✭✭dunkamania

Anyone else think its a bit presumptious of Alves to call for a title shot considering he didnt make weight?

Alves was impressive though, I thought Hughes was injured if he was pulling guard, but apparently not.

    Wiman very impressive

Once again Vera shows he probably belongs at LHW, early stoppage or not

Bisping looked the best I have ever seen him, but he doesnt appear to have KO power, which could cost him against the big punchers in the division

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 661 ✭✭✭Charlie3dan

Anyone have any videos of the fights? Missed the whole thing

Well when u dont make weight and have previously got caught for steroids....its a bit much to say "I've been a good boy". Considering Fitch absolutely destroyed him I dont see him being champ anytime soon but he is the next logical contender unless BJ comes up.

Vera at LHW would be better suited, he needs to stop being lazy with his dieting. 228lbs...I mean most LHWs walk around heavier than that.

Yes, to be honest. He's in a pretty stacked division and while he has had a good two years he also has a failed drugs test and now weight cutting issues....which just looks worse when you get busted for diuretics.

Hughes wasn't exactly in the title picture right now so beating him shouldn't get you there either. One more quality win over another top tier welterweight and yes....title shot.

    Not till then.
