Ok that title might be a bit confusing...

basically what are the movies that you love but everyone you know, including the critics, hate.

Also what critically acclaimed and universally loved movies do you find boring, drab and overhyped.

    For me:

    Shouldn't love but I do:

    The Condemned
    The Marine
    Alien vs Predator: Requiem
    Bio-Dome

Bored the life out of me:

    The Godfather
    Scarface
    Pride & Prejudice
    Atonement
    Dr. Strangelove
    The Deer Hunter

I totally agree with you about The Godfather (part 1).......a very dull film about a wedding (mostly) starring the most overrated actor in history.

    And 2001 - A Space Odyssey.....another pile of crap.

There aren't many films that are highly critically acclaimed that I dislike. One of the only ones that springs to mind is The Breakfast Club.
I figure the central theme of the movie is something like: while we are all different from each other, we are all united by oppression. Absolute sh*te in my opinion. The truth is that these adolescents are not oppressed at all; they are just acting like sh*theads. There are no great mysteries to growing up; you just get on with it and rub one out when the hormones get too much.
Plus, the scene where Emilio Estevez's character gets stoned is the single most unrealistic scene in movie history.
If ever anyone tells me that The Breakfast Club deeply moved them, I find myself already thinking that that person is a total idiot. They may subsequently change my mind, but that will be my first impression.

Regarding the OP's choices of movies he didn't like: I didn't bother with Atonement or Pride and Prejudice. Neither The Deer Hunter nor Scarface blew me away, but I liked Dr. Strangelove. The Godfather Part 1 is an incredible film though, and I'd recommend giving it another shot. I watch it every few months and I pick up new, ingenious details every time. It is my third-favourite film.

    Pan's Labyrinth.

Don't know if I'm actually "supposed" to love it, but it doesn't take away from the fact that it is a total piece of shít.

Ran is another one. Painful load of bollix. Almost brings a tear to my eye to think it was directed by Kurosawa. :(

Bringing Up Baby. "Classic" 30's comedy that's about as funny as toothache

Cabaret and Eraserhead should go on the list also.

Well said. I thought I was in for an enjoyable watch when I turned it on, but my jaw just started dropping as it got more and more absurd. My main beef with it is that it bears little to no resemblence to teenage reality. When the 'goth' (by far the most interesting character up until that point) had her make over and Estavez fell in love with her, I was shocked: what kind of morals and values was Hughes trying to preach? Doll yourself up and the jocks will fall in love with you? Wow. A film that preaches conformity, and actively discourages any kind of difference and variety. Dreadful film. Amazing it came from the same guy who did the wonderful Ferris Bueller.

But also a Godfather non-fan, mainly due to Brando (mumbling does not a good performance make). Admittedly, I haven't seen it in a while, and will sit through the whole trilogy soon, but was very underwhelmed by it.

Another Godfather non-fan. Perhaps because I saw it after the likes of Goodfellas, Casino, Scarface, Donnie Brasco et al, it wasn't as fresh as it would have otherwise been.

All 3 resident evils, both Aliens vs. Predator movies and the killer, Wild Wild West. Hard to say how funny I thought it was

I can't understand how The Shawshank Redemption always tops voting poles. I quite enjoyed it but that's about it. It ain't a classic.

I also hate critics favourite Cache. It's a horrible, manipulative, pretentious and boring little film.

    I didn't like Juno

I felt its another sign that america is doing to indie movies whats its already done to every other genre of movies.. i.e. making them painfully predictable.

Also I HATE with a passion how all indie movies have to use acoustic guitar music as the score. ENOUGH ALREADY WE GET IT YOUR MOVIE IS COOL/HIP/<insert other buzzword used ad nauseum>

    Agreed on Deerhunter! soooo boring.

AVP2 however was the biggest pile of crap i ever did see, shame on you! ;)

    keeping with the alien theme.

Alien 3 is usually lambasted as the point the franchise made a sharp decline.

but I love Alien 3 and Resurrection.

the series went downhil with Alien vs Predator

and reached an all time low with avp2.

see that's where I think views differ. I don't view AvP as being in canon with either the Predator or Alien movies, its a series unto itself.

I watch an AvP movie the same way i'd watch any zombie/monster movie. I'm not expecting any deep storyline. For AvP all I wanted was Aliens fighting Predators with plenty of human fodder to fill the gaps. On this front I think AvP2 succeeded.

If you are looking for a prologue/epilogue to the Alien or Predator series then you aren't going to get it. But if you view AvP as merely a spiritual sequel and are also a fan of cheesy monster movies then they won't disappoint.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,698 ✭✭✭✭BlitzKrieg

I don't view AvP as being in canon with either the Predator or Alien movies, its a series unto itself.

I'm in two minds about this

    1. its like you said a series unto itself, in which case, the goals of this *new* series brainless fun and frolic ala a zombie/monster movie, in which case the first film failed miserable because its an impotent lifeless corpse with its only claim to brainless fun being the alien rex they have at the end. Otherwise its rubbish like all of paul w.s andersons other films because he is too much of a *safe* director.

The second film is even more rubbish because the vast majority of the brainless fun is very badly put together, both from a technical perspective and from a simple pacing issue. None of the characters are appealing (which is surprisingly a very important factor in brainless fun...see Evil Dead for reference) and the monsters had none of that *awesome* factor.

Thats is if I try try try to put the films far from the alien franchise.

    But

    that fails because

    2. The first film tried really really really hard to fit itself with the alien franchise, and did it in such stupid cringeworthy ways, then after very boldy claiming its definitive link it went on to ignore canon established by the franchise. Aside from that its a very dull film but from a franchise perspective it can get the nod of *trying* The sequel *whistle* declares its link with the franchise by directly following the first avp. But it shamefully sneaks in with some horrible links to the prior films (the yutani bit at the end was woeful.)

Now if you told me to look at them as continuations of the predator franchise...then yeah the first film is still crap but the second...gets a meh.
But if you view AvP as merely a spiritual sequel and are also a fan of cheesy monster movies then they won't disappoint.

    a) It has nothing in *spirit* with the original films so even as a spiritual sequel it deserves a severe grilling.

    b) I am a huge cheesy monster movie fan, I love watching them but both films still very much disapoint, they are just simply bad films.

To keep things on topic 2 other films that are really bad but i still like watching them:

    Predator 2
Godzilla (U.S remake, yes its atrocious but its like watching ferris bueller's day off with a big freaking dinosaur, and as a *spiritual* remake its horrible beyond words, I just like Mathew Broderick and jean reno)

I cant stand romance films as it makes me zzzzzzzzzzzzzzz! And hate any austin powers films they are so stupid imo.

Boo on all your anti Godfather people, philistines!!! :p The youth of today dont understand pacing. :(

I agree with blitzkrieg and some of the rest of you on Alien 3 and Resurrection, I enjoyed them. Alien 3 being the superior

I like Best of the best, despite the fact its crap. You just cant beat aul eric roberts melodramatic performances (Pope of greenwich village being the highlight!)

I also like The prophecy which i shouldnt but Walken is the MAN in that flick and Viggo is the best devil ive seen in a film.

Im not keen on Usual Suspects, Spiderman or Superman Returns.

I don't see the appeal of Scarface. I love ganster films like Goodfellas, The Godfather, Heat, Casino, Carlito's Way etc... but Scarface is dreadful. they could have done a much better job on it.

I completly dissagree with the people who think 2001 is a pile of crap. it's artsy but it's brilliant. they used ingenious special effects. special effects that make you think and not just say "oh yeah, cgi, great"

the floating pen is an example of the ingenious special effects. todays effects wizards wouldn't be able to think of it even though it is so simplistic (the pen is taped to a pane of glass) and it looks amazing

For the teenage audience it was aimed at, it was right on the money, IMHO. I was 16 when it came out, though I didn't see it until a few years later. If the D.O.B. on your public profile is accurate, you weren't even 3. You may as well ask me about Spy Kids.

Krzysztof Kieślowski's Three Colours trilogy bored me. I've seen them all and can barely remember anything about them, but their critical acclaim has been fossilized by the death of the director. For an example of what I mean, see Roger Ebert's retrospective.

I haven't read any of the Harry Potter books, but I have seen a couple of the movies. Based on that, I find the whole concept incredibly derivative of so much other young adult fiction: Roald Dahl, Tolkien, CS Lewis, Terry Pratchett, Enid Blyton and (especially) Frank Richards' (Billy Bunter), and Richmal Crompton's (Just William) books. Any time we see stories about kids causing trouble in private schools, the last two inevitably come to mind. :pac:

I appreciate a good romantic comedy, but anything involving Nora Ephron gets on my goat, for two main reasons: Meg Ryan, and the soundtracks, both of which are used like hammers to bludgeon you in to feeling the right emotion at the right time. Examples: Sleepless In Seattle, When Harry Met Sally, and You've Got Mail.

Some counter-examples I could mention are also romantic comedies, but ones with well-developed stories : Miss Congeniality (1), Two Weeks Notice, and particularly One Fine Day, which was largely overlooked despite its star cast. One of those films that tells a realistic story, with gentle humour, and an ending that doesn't inevitably lead to wedding bells.

Lastly: I liked The Godfather, Part III. Yes, Sofia Coppola looked like the gawky teenager she was, but her character was a gawky teenager, and I don't get why she got the flack she did. I thought the opera staging in the final act was genius, the way it took the story full circle, back to the origins of the Mafia as "Rustic Cavalry" in Sicily.

Another Lord of The Rings hater, got so bored in cinema during first one that i worked out how often a little redlight on fire alarm blinked (think it was once every 45 seconds). And to make it worse, most of my mates think they're amazing so i've been pretty much forced to watch the others on DVD:mad:.

I always loved Hudson Hawk:eek:. Think for a while there it held record as biggest financial flop ever. Must watch it again and see if I still think its amazing. Hope I do...:p

Absolutlely loved the new Rambo movie, despite all the reviews pointing to hell and people hating with a passion because "it was too over-the-top!"............what the hell did they expect from the cinematic icon, intriget character and plot development with a dash of mystery?

Batman Begins I didn't really like when I 1st saw it. Watched it again recently and my views still don't change. I know since it's a comic book movie it's allowed to have whisps of fantasy in it but for a movie like this that tried to have the whole "gritty" realism one moment and then daft sequences the next just didn't please me. That and I found it to be a very sterile looking movie and Nolan went a bit crazy in chopping scenes in the editing room. The Dark Knight seems to be shot in a completely different style, lots of "epic" looking shots from the trailers.

Eurgh, might as well mention this since I'm here. Watched Street Fighter: The Movie last night (The Van-Damme one :pac: ), absolutely horrendous veiwing. I almost choked on my vomit from the sheer shìtness that was this movie, offending tripe! I love watching bad movies cuz they're so bad they're good...................not quite so with this one though, good grief!!

+1 on Hudson Hawk. Not exactly arty, but I thought it was a fine screwball caper comedy. The ribbing Hudson got for drinking "wussy" cappuccino looks nicely ironic today: since the movie was made, Starbucks has taken over the world, and I'm a cappuccino addict. :pac:

Wow, the Godfather isn't too popular here

Films that were highly rated but I didn't like at all:
There will be blood & No country for old men are recent examples

Fight Club was pure muck imo but seems to have a cult following
    Scarface too

I loved The Island (yes, Michael Bay) and Equilibrium. Both were slammed by critics and both lost money afaik

Taxi Driver. Maybe it was because I watched it late night when I was really tired but I didnt think much of it, and Im a big De Niro and Scorsese fan.

Ditto The Exorcist. IIRC it was re released after having been banned or out of print when I was around 12 or so. After 50 minutes absoloutely nothing in way of a plot had developed, so I switched off.

Thought the first American Pie was brutal. Second was gas though.

    Should love:

The Mist - Absolutlely attrocious acting, shockingly awful
after Thomas kills everyone in the car, he was acting like "is this how you want me to do it when we roll cameras?".
The movie was just 1 step up from the usual stuff the Sci-Fi channel would show on obscure nights. Ending was quite predictable too, especially for a Stephen King story where you know there's always a big twist to come.

Indiana Jones IV - I'm sorry, but, I just don't understand the uber-geekdom hype for this movie. I liked the other 3 but I didn't love them.

    Should hate:

Micheal Bay movies - I just love how they're gloriously over the top on explosions, spinning cameras, flashy cinematography, cars rolling and smashing around everywhere. Most of them are still muck, though.

I thought Pulp Fiction was poor. I liked Jackie Brown and Kill Bill 1 and 2 though.

I liked Serenity when most non boards people thought it was a heap of dung.

Anything with Nicholas Cage or Tom "Running and Crying" Cruise is muck and I say that with sly reference to Wild at Heart and Magnolia both of which I liked somewhat.

Tom Hanks is unwatchable for me so again anything he does apart from Big.

    ??

Just quick check, was that the remake or the original of The Mist? Cause the remake is shockingly bad and is considered one of the worse remakes ever.

Also how can you hate a film thats not out yet? Sure your not picked up by the hype (I wasnt for Iron Man) but seems stupid to put it in a list of films you hate before you even seen it.

and yes Micheal Bay films are fun when they focus on pretty explosions and action, its when he tries to put a plot or something in with it that it all goes horrible wrong.
