Hi just wondering if anyone has been to this gym - seems to be very new. Any information on prices/equipment? The website doesn't give much away.
    Cheers

Might go check it out tommorow...I live about 15 minutes away...would join for sure if it was anyway decent. Love the atmosphere most of the time at Total Fitness, but damn cycling there can be tough with the weather.

actually found the site there, doesn't seem too much focus on weights, it looks like one of those cushy gyms where people go to let off some steam after their frappacino.

Hi did you ever manage to have a look at that gym? What is it like?
    Cheers

    I visited them today.

Everything is nice because it's new :)
Changing room is very spaciuos, loads of lockers. Most of them are pretty small though, but some of them are the full size. You have to bring in your own lock.
Not too many showers (8 or less, I didn't count). Sauna is just in back of the shower room which is very handy.
Gym is equipped with Cybex machines: treadmills, crosstrainers, steppers etc. Two racks of free weigths: one up to 37kg dumbbells; another up to 20kg. Some benches (3 or 4 I think), smyths machine, cable cross-over, rack of barbells up to 35 or 40kg. Corner for working out your abs with mats, exercise balls etc...
I found cardio machines being to close to each other which gave all the gym floor that too packed look.
My overall rating would be good to very good because they have everything what I'm used to have in my current gym (Jackie Skelly Greystones) exept the jaccuzi and swimming pool (that I don't use them anyway - so why pay for it).

The fees are: 59euros/month for single person; 110eur/month if two persons join as a couple (i.e. 55eur/month each). no joining fee at the moment and no contract - it basically is pay as you go gym :)
I'm definatelly joining it. I handed over my notice in Jackie Skelly today (that will save me around 40eur/month inc. travel expenses to greystones).

    any student prices?

    was there many people there?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,065 ✭✭✭j@utis

I wouldn't know about the prices for students as I'm not a student anymore :)

Yesterday (on sunday) there were ~6 people in the gym around 3pm. Talked to someone who's the member: yes, it gets a little bit crowded in the afternoons on workdays. I think it's all the same with all the gyms: people finish their work and head off to the gym.

there's plenty of parking all the time. you're given the code for underground parking once you've joined the gym.
there's no pool in peak health is there?
no, there's no pool in this gym. and thanks god. I have had enough of pool 'benefits' in the jackie skellies- all those screaming kids and their moms, water and mould everywhere because it never dries out etc...
btw they're building swimming pool facility on the southern cross road in bray. it should be opened this autumn, so here's is your pool.

yes, and what's wrong with that, let me ask? or you want to park there to go shopping on the main street?!

also what info are you looking for? I've been member of this gym for over 6 weeks now and I have no complaints apart that they should get a straight bar for the cable cross-over machine.

i joined Peak Health about 2 weeks ago in the end TO USE THE GYM AND NOT USE THE PARKING FOR SHOPPING IN BRAYi actually find it very comfortable and not over crowded at all. the equipment is brand new, everywhere spotless and u can actually have a great laugh with the staff there is a great atmosphere. To be honest they seem to be the only gym so far that dont take andvantage of their members.:D

    oh, that's great.
but when a person puts 3 '!!!' signs at the end of the sentence it usually means that he/she is not happy with something ;)

I joined peak health about two weeks ago (was in the glenview before that) and finding it pretty decent. Can get a bit busy if your doing the weights but after seven in the evening you pretty much have the run of the place. If you head in there about nine in the morning there is no waiting for weights, well worth it.

No waiting for machines (don't use em much but they have LOADS) and its a pretty relaxed atmosphere so I'm liking it.

Been meaning to go early in the morning just haven't got around to it yet but I doubt its gonna be busy. I'll post whats it like in the morn next week...assuming I get drag myself outta bed.

Loving the fact that the sauna is right beside the cold shower. Its a small thing but cool. And the girls on the front desk always gotta smile.

Just went there today at 6.30am. Free run of the place...free weights and cardio machines.

I have just joined this club after christmas and it all looks very good. Only thing is no pool.

Other than that so far so good

I've been a member of this gym for over 8months now and I find it being a little bit a 'health spa'. Free weights section is too small; billion of serious and not that serious lifters turn it black in the late afternoons, queues to use smiths, cable cross-over etc etc.
They have only one cable machine, one Smiths machine that's always busy and no spower rack. This gym certainly won't produce any serious athletes. ok, maybe it's a bit too harsh, but I'm starting thinking about changing gyms...

ok, here's a little update: after a year since they opened they finally realized that getting a power rack was a good idea. so we have one there now and can start squating (at last!).
and also they got some more dumbbells in too: another !THIRD! set of 2kg, 4kg, 6kg, 8kg... and so on. so if 10kg is too light for your exersice and 12kg is too heavy then you can only go and shoot yourself. question: what were they thinking? or better: were they thinking?! (why why oh why not to get 3kg, 5kg, 7kg ones????).

They are 2,3,4,6,8,10kg sets, the owner contacted me looking for them and I convinced him to get a power rack aswell. He is planning to extend the free weights area again in the near future. I don't think there are many times a 2kg jump is really going be a problem, the standard is usually 2.5kg in dumbbells and 4kg in kettlebellls.

my previous gym had two sets of 3, 5, 7 etc kg of those shiny chrome york dumbbells. and here again: two the same sets, the same problem :(

first thanks for talking the gym owner into some sense. and that near future will turn into another year or two but meh whatever...
Anyways I still find hard to understand why to buy tons of treamills, xtrainers and bicycles when there's actual need for completely different equipment. I've never seen more than 6 of those 14 treadmills in use. and very little of people would exercise on one for more than 20mins.

and yes, 2kg increment might be a problem if you're a girl. but afterall 3 the same sets LOL

hey, what was with the gym been closed the last two Days, was there on Friday and nothing was said about it been closed the weekend. If they can send a text saying bring a friend friday the least they can do is say when the place is closed instead of just a note on the door when you get down there

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 35 big_poppa

what time you get there at they close on friday at 8 and 6 on saturday and sunday

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,065 ✭✭✭j@utis

gym was closed all weekend. no explanation given. very bad. unprofessional.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 158 ✭✭iamfromcork

The Landlord changed the locks because the rent was a week late! Its being sorted out this morning, so should be open again later today. I'll update this with any news as I get it.

Hey, thats good to hear if its true, been hearing that the rent hasn't been paid for a year from a lad that was there saturday morning, just thinking about all those people that paid a years membership. It's happened in other places. Wouldn't like to see it closed down one of the best places around.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 35 big_poppa

this is ridiculous i went down early to see if it was open but no joy and theirs a hand written note on the door saying the gym was closed! its a great place i love it. There staff are really good and helpful be a big pity if they closed the place. i paid a full year membership in September what a waste that would be.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 158 ✭✭iamfromcork

Well i tried to ring them at 9 to see if they were opened tomorrow, no answer at least leave a voice mail if your planning on opening again :(. At this stage i think canceling the bank transfer on the 3rd of every month might be an idea .

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,394 ✭✭✭Transform

wow that sounds like the recession hit - hope it opens back up as the area needs a good gym

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 35 big_poppa

anyone know if its open today?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,537 ✭✭✭The Davestator

Update - there's bound to be lots of runours (fuelled mainly by Jackie Skelly's in Greystones)

The land lord is based in the USA and we are awaiting an update from him / his solicitors today. The reason we have not communicated more with members or left a voice mail is because the locks were changed sometime on Friday night so no staff have been able to gain access.

I'll update here as soon as I hear anything.

I'd sooner drive an hour to a gym and back than ever go back to Jackie Skelly's hated that place. Well let us know when peak health will open again and thanks for the info.

    Hi
Been trying to get in since sunday and was down there again today at 11am but no sign of life. Been reading the posts on here and facebook and they are saying the locks were changed sometime on friday night and no staff have been able to get access, then how come the ''Closed Today'' signs are on the inside??!! Think someones not telling the whole truth or nothing but the truth!!:confused:

exactly what i thought, how did they put up signs inside the door??
i have a practical exam tomorrow morning at 9, which i need my gym stuff for, which is in a locker at peak health, which i've been trying to get since sunday. such a pain in the ass.

i also joined in september and paid a year upfront, so i reckon if they do close down we all break in and take the weights. bags the squat rack though cause it was my idea

    Very helpful!

All Peak Health members - keep yourself informed on Peak Health's facebook page. All these rumours and conspiracy theories are not helpful. No staff member has set foot inside the club since friday night. The landlord put the sign up for us after numerous requests.

    Hi
You are saying on facebook that you are having a meeting with the landlord today at 2pm to sort this out but you have already said the landlord is in the U.S.A??. IF you mean his solicitors then say so as there is a big diffrence on how long this can take to sort out. You also say that the landlord put up the signs and i can't see his solicitors doing this, when it gets to the stage of changing the locks it will be more serious than a ''misunderstanding'' .

P.s Note to the ''devastator'' not everyone is on Facebook.

This is being covered right now on RTE Radio 1's "Liveline".

Presumably, it should be possible to listen back to this at http://www.rte.ie/radio1/liveline/ at some stage in the near future.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,183 ✭✭✭dioltas

Nearly over now I'd say but if ye wanna listen live: http://dynamic.rte.ie/av/live/radio/radio1.asx

Your man's (the manager?) story seems full of holes! Went from a week late on rent to 14 months! They were still taking yearly memberships last week.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1 adooble

I wish I'd heard what they said on Liveline. I have been a member for 18 days I paid upfront €400. I will be soo angry if I simply lose all my money. If they are out of business they must have known that this was going to happen , why were they still accepting year long memberships.

From what I gather it's still very much up in the air. The two sides are saying two different things. Landlord is claiming he is owed 14 months rent or something like that. No information was given on what to do next.

Peak Health business will not be conducted on boards.ie. Join the peak health group on facebook and you'll be updated as soon as there is an update.

If you go to www.rteradio1.ie and then got to ''listen live'' then go down to ''liveline'' on the right hand side, you can listen to the show from earlier. It might be still yesterdays show on it but about the peak health issue should be on tomorrow, if you get what i mean..:):) Hope this helps...
