I must say I love it... though not everyone will!

It's certainly very different from anything on 'Plans' - has a much rawer sound - from the bassline, to the the build-up and the climax. Roll on 'Narrow Stairs' on May 16th.

Oh, and there's two versions. One's the full album version (8 and a half minutes) and the other is a radio edit (4 and a half minutes).

8 and a half minute version:

4 and a half minute version:

i posted this about a month ago and no one listened to me :( although it was just the song.

    it's fupping excellent.

*edit* just listened to the radio edit, and man they needed the singing to come in much later imo.

Sorry Cremo.. must have completely missed it as was unaware of the song until last night.

Agree about the radio edit.. the 8 and a half minute has that build-up which is stupendous!

Did i not comment on it, i've been listening to is since then, it's class alright and i agree the radio edit is too short!!

I'm going to be the first to say...I don't like it! that ridiculously long intro just starts boring a hole through my head, especially the bassline...god I hate that bassline! For me it doesn't really go anywhere and once the singing eventually arrives, the verse doesn't really seem strong enough to justify the very drawn-out intro.

I'm not a huge Death Cab fan, although there are about 5/6 songs of theirs that I do quite like. Think I'll stick to my preferece of Postal Service!

Loving this. The intro reminds me of Spiders if played on bass which isn't a bad thing at all. Massive step up from Plans as well. It is a little anticlimactic though, poor lyrics

lol don't worry about it, your post has videos.

    ya did :D

i think the radio edit needed just about another 30 seconds of the bass riff, as the structure would be slightly better then.

I agree with PeadarofAodh somewhat. The song doesn't really have a climax that you'd expect from the long buildup. It didn't put me off however, I think theres too many songs these days with this formula (alot from Death Cab as well).

I never really liked Plans too much. Loved everything up until that album, but the sound of it made me think they were going in the same direction as Coldplay, toward the very mediocre. While this song continues in mostly the same vein its not quite what I expected for the next album. From first listen I like it and it gives me hope for the future.

Edit : New album seems to be "out" btw. For those that are that way inclined.

    Haha! That'll show them!

Meh! There is no outstanding melody like everything on Plans. It's a bit half-baked and could have done with a better progression and climax.
That said, it's not bad, and I'd hope that it's not the best song on the album. But there are a few nice ideas there which may be the case for the rest of the album. *Crosses fingers*

Ray D'Arcy seems to be the only DJ giving it some airplay.. it's been played at least twice in the last 2 or 3 days (it's on as I type this).

Probably 'Plans'.. but 'Transatlanticism' is probably their best.

A lot of their older stuff is very different (and somewhat more difficult to warm to) but for older stuff, try 'The Photo Album' and 'You Can Play These Songs With Chords'

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 651 ✭✭✭eire1

Yeah I'd definately recommend Plans aswell.

Heard the new album today. Some amazing tracks on it, some not so much. The opening track is so good.

PM me if you also want to hear it ;)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 44,200 ✭✭✭✭Basq

How pissed was I that I was heading away for a weekend and only noticed my Zen wouldn't play the format the album was ripped in! :(

Just started listening now and Bixby Canyon Bridge is amazing!

Will be back with full opinions later.

Meh to Plans tbh. Found it very boring.

    Photo Album ftw.

It's definitely all about We Have the Facts... and Transatlanticism.

I haven't listened to their earlier stuff but Narrow Stairs sounds pretty good. Particurly like No Sunlight and Long Division.

Gave it a listen while playing GTA IV.

Was a bit distracted while listening - but 'No Sunlight' is a blinding little track alright.. as is 'Bixby Canyon Bridge' (probably my favourite on the album).

Should be a deadly album, what I've heard so far is all deadly stuff.
    Roll on Friday :)

The song Pity and Fear sounds awesome but the version I have must be faulty. It cuts out fater 4:20 :/

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 108 ✭✭ianthefox

Supposedly it's meant to end like that.

    I think it sounds ****.

I'd be gutted if it did end like that. The song has such potential. Everytime I listen to it and get cut off I feel ill.

    The album is fairly average

Wow... IWPYH is amazing, but the record is a TOTAL let-down. I'd foolishly gotten my hopes up on the basis of the single and all the hype spearheaded by that MTV article*, but all this talk of it being their edgiest and rawest offering yet has turned out to be bollocks - as one of my buddies said earlier, aside from IWPYH it sounds like a bunch of b-sides. Not the dark, spaced out departure from their usual sound that I was expecting.

    * There's something really fishy about that re-reading it now actually, as in after listening to the record it reads like it's just part of Atlantic's promo budget - the premise of the article is that it's some dude who's always hated the band but has been converted by this record because "none of it sounds like anything DCFC have ever done". That's bollocks unless you've just heard Plans and nothing else.

"After hearing Narrow Stairs earlier this week, it turns out that everything I had known about Death Cab was wrong. They are actually a really great band, and Stairs is unquestionably the best thing they've ever done." - F*ck sake.

This is the article I'm talking about by the way.

Rolling Stone also gave it 4 / 5 (the best rating they have given a Death Cab album).

Just gave it a first listen there and I actually quite like it. It's definitely listenable. Needs a bit more of an airing though before I can give it a fair critique.

I'm with Xavi on this one.

And i'm also glad it#s different to previous albums, i am always glad to see bands try something new. I hate safe albums.

    Bixby is ****ing amazing.

Right after giving it a good ten listens or so I still really like it. In fact I'd say it's bloody excellent. A definite 8 out of 10 for me and that could rise to a 9 shortly.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,460 ✭✭✭Orizio

A couple of more listens. Its fine, there is nothing wrong with it. A couple of good tracks, but for the most part its forgettable and mediocre.

I'd rather listen to Spoon really. ;)
