I'm so excited, and I just can't hide it, I'm about to lose control and I think I like it.

    Oh yeah.

I know he did some good, and a lot of politicians are corrupt but after the
revelation that when he was Minister for Finance he didnt have a bank account
and wasnt sure of all the money he kept under his matress, then it was time
to quit and go into hiding!

Nope, I've doen very well for myself while Bertie has been in charge. Please come back all is forgiven!

Absolutely. It's about time someone in office was forced to resign. If Charlie had gotten into trouble, Bertie wouldn't have tried. Hopefully the next in line will reasile that he's NOT untouchable and keep his arse clean.

Everything I don't like is either woke or fascist - possibly both - pick one.

True, but the celebrity status was getting to me. How many people got rich off his back for the wrong reasons?

Naa, thats ridiculous, he never should have had to resign,
He did a sh*tload for this country, its about time you idiots realised it.

I'm delighted he is going, but I'd be even happier if it was straight away and not in a months times!!

Oh yeah he did it all himself, he was great putting up that spire on o'connell street, sure he nearly broke his back lifting it!

Happy to see him go as it has been going on for too long. Obvious that the Tribunal has something on him and the effect of the drip drip revelations have all but paralysed the Government.

He did some good but in the end (like many before him) it was the cover up that got him in the end

    Delighted he is gone

good friday agreement, incredible economic growth vs few shady deals.

Like so many others i've made hay while the sun shined....thanks for the good times Bertie. He wasn't exactly on the straight and narrow but i think overall the country is in better shape than it was before he arrived. Decisions on corporate tax rates and attraction of foreign investment have had a seriously significant effect on all our lives.

Ok,...the schools & hospitals still need work.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,281 ✭✭✭PullMyFinger!

    No.

2 million unemployed before he took office. 2 million employed now. The Good Friday Agreement. The Celtic Tiger (admittedly it was on its way when he took over).

Yes, he possibly took some brown envelopes, but Id rather a leader who did this and got the results he has over the past ten years than a gobsh!te like Enda Kenny.

It'll be interesting to see what people think of his departure in 5 years time when half the country will be emigrating for jobs again.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 49 oriain

yeah sure, the country did well while he was in power but he is not the only person responsible for the good times. When he first came into power he did a lot but he's been coasting ever since.

The quality of public services in this country has gone down the toilet in his length of time in office and more Politicians should be held accountable for their inability to perform in their post.

Bertie, you were a good thing when you were voted in the first time but now I'm glad to see the back of ya. Take that God awful coalition of yours with ya now and I'd be even happier.

Stop counting pensioners, children and housewives. :p

why does evertbody think that bertie singlehanded saved the country. please, he was a face put on a political party. thats all. the real work was done by backbenchers and oppostion td's just as much

I have to say that Bertie Ahern has done magnificent work during his time as Taoiseach. That's particularly true in relation to the economy and the Northern Ireland Peace Process.

However, to have a leader of our country who is unable to account for his financial affairs and large sums of money satisfactorily for such a long time period is wholly unacceptable and I think he has done the right thing by standing down and helping to deflect the justified personal attention he is receiving away from the work of the Government. His resignation is over due but not too late either. He could've been completely defiant and stuck his heels in but I am glad he's realised that he no longer is in a capacity to successfully lead the Dail and the country.

I also wish Brian Cowen every success in his (inevitable) new role.

maybe so, but it has been over shadowed by all these revalations about his finances, i think he had his moment, his time has ran its course, its maybe time for him to go, not saying i'm delighted over it, but not hugely disapointed

wheres the unsure opition on that poll

don't really give a toss tbh.
The government don't tend to listen to us peasants anyway, why should we be interested in them?

I'm not happy about this at all :( i admired the way bertie got things done, he was the peoples taoiseach, i dread to think of the person we get in place!
Sorry to see ya go Bertie!

All the possible replacements are laughable.

Fianna Fail's bull**** has always annoyed me, but bertie was an efficient little fúcker with a good public face for the country. He deserves what he gets, and Fianna Fail should have had it's comeupance long ago.

But the real negative of it all is that regardless of how much you hated bertie the oppositions offerings were allways pathetic.

One more silly fúcker who couldn't keep his nose clean

On the other hand you have the likes of Micheal Martin who wants to stuff everyones nose with cotton wool......Damned either way :(

It’s about time he did; this is just modern day corruption… all double standards… I really don’t understand how and why he is still in power… and we say we don’t support corruption!
He has lied under oath, he can’t verify his transactions anyone that isn’t happy to see him go is ignorant.

As happy as I am to see him go for the good of the country, I felt a little pang of sadness at the passing of an era when I listened to his speech this morning. That's just evidence of how good a politician he is/was; that he can do so much wrong in the eyes of a person but yet you still feel bad for him. No-one can say that a lot of good things didn't happen during his tenure...but the dodgy crap he (may have) got up to before he became Taoiseach tarnished him and made it unworkable.
I hope Mahon comes up with something solid and irrefutable on him, just so we know for certain that his leadership was tainted....him being semi-vindicated in years to come would damage the electorate WRT who to believe; media, judiciary or politicians.
I also hope that with this aside from next month that the rest of the incumbents can get on with actually running the country and fixing some of the sh*t that Bertie never got around to...I'm not sure I'm comfortable with Cowan holding the reigns either...

I am a little sad to see him go but all the stuff that was uncovered through the tribunal was totally unacceptable for a leader. His legacy will be his part in the peace in the north and how great the economy was under his leadership.

    Bye bye Bertie!

Had to go and that was obvious from a distance out.
John Waters was unbelievably correct when he said that you dont send out a woman to defend your actions.
Grainne Carruth could only do her job and no matter what she wanted to do she was forced to tell the truth. The truth that was the straw that broke the Camels back. Sad today and a difficult time for the Nation but we will be stronger for it and hopefully this is the last time that money and payments from groups or private citizens will ever be an issue.

Alot of people got rich off his back for the right reasons too.

The celebrity status is just a crazy reason to be glad he is gone. I dont get the celebrity thing either, he goes to a few sporting events and he is a celebrity. Not his fault his daughters have a celebrity lifestyle, whats he supposed to do turn his back on them.

right to go now. he has limited damage to his historical legacy. he'll go out on a high as the first irish leader to address the us congress. his dodgy dealings will only be a footnote.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 8,983 ✭✭✭leninbenjamin

ordinarily i would. except that none of those who will potential replace him inspire full confidence either. What worries me further however, is that the rest of his cabinet have been defending the indefensible so much of late that they clearly are not able to stand up for themselves, they are too used to living under Bertie's shadow. They've been led by him for so long, and gotten so institutionalized by this that i dont see anyone of leadership quality in the current cabinet.

Bertie has done alot for this country and is respected throughout Europe. So I wouldn't be as quick to jump on the 'Bertie out band Wagon!'. All the same when the tax payer has to foot the bill for The 'Bertiegate Tribunal' it's time to hang up your hat. I'll sit firmly on the fence on this one!

That line alone made me laugh out loud. I never understand why people just pluck a figure out of the air and try to claim it is true. If you think it was possible or true that this country, with it's overall population of a bit over four million, could have two million of a workforce out of work, then I can see why you think Bertie was so great.

Just to get this into perspective , and what I would dearly love to see ,

Is an organisation set up , something like CAB , but to scrutinise the finances of all of our TD's , and to systematically verify that they are all above board in this respect , it should be a condition of the job.

And I'd love to see how many of the current mudslingers would come out of this clean , I doubt there'd be any.

Its sickening when you hear of this type of thing from a Politician , especially the Taoiseach , but its even more sickening when you hear the righteous indignation of others whom you strongly suspect of doing exactly the same thing ,

Lets propose the above CAB type organisation for members of the Dail and restore confidence in the political system in this country !

If theyve nothing to hide , then theyve nothing to lose , right ?
