I was made feel unwelcome in the Irish language forum.

I don't need it anyway, but their attitude stinks.

Sorry, DesF, but TnanG is lán-Ghaelach and there are no exceptions. Moved your post to a new thread in AH, should get some responses here (probably from the TnanG heads).

I couldn't care less any more.

Your charter states that once someone isn't trolling then English is tolerated.

You know, I once had an interest in learning the language.

This closed club attitude has made me change my mind.

    Thanks anyway.

They may as well rename the forum IFF - English Not Welcome with an attitude like that. The ridulous part of it is DesF was looking for help on getting to know the language better.

Man there's better languages, like German!

Your in it. Hullaballoo canted it over here, so DesF duely edited.

    @ Desf

I think you should have edited to say what you've said but with a quote of your original message. Let people see the injustice for themselves.

i would agree with Des. Irish speakers are not better than the rest of us, and most of them try to act like they are. Seeing as many of my friends are fluent, we have arguements all the time cause i couldnt be ar*ed going to the gaelgor spots and even making an attempt with them. puts me right of the language!

Don't be put off by a minority on a message board. In reality, Irish speakers are more than willing to help others to learn. I hated Gaeilge in school, it took me a few years after leaving school to realise how fun it actually is to speak it, even if you've only a few words, like me.

If people are being stroppy at you because you're not fluent, then they're not worth talking to.. in either language.

Des is completely right to be honest. I saw his post (which was fine really) and was going to respond to it later, but now that he hates all of us Gaeilgeoirí (because of a silly rule) he probably won't even want to hear what I have to say.

I mean sure, he could've started a new thread in the Radio Forum for his query, but to be honest he was far more likely to get a better response in a thread already discussing it.

If I post as Gaeilge in AH, will it get moved to TnanG? What king of a world are we living in?

    Not in my experience tbh
I hated Gaeilge in school, it took me a few years after leaving school to realise how fun it actually is to speak it, even if you've only a few words, like me.
    I loved it tbh.

In Primary school I was picked out of a class of 38 to appear on an irish language TV program, do some speaking and reading.

It was the idiot "Christian" Brother in secondary who did for me tbh. Made me lose any of it I had.

I always had an interest in learning more about it after school, and I thought my OP in TnaG was a way for me to "get back into it" so to speak.

I did a search for the topic, found it being discussed in TnaG, but discovered I hadn't a scooby of understanding it, so I checked the charter to see if English is permitted in any way. Turns out the charter says it is, but the Mod and users decided to tell me to piss off to AH.
If people are being stroppy at you because you're not fluent, then they're not worth talking to.. in either language.
    Too true.

Yeah, the topic was there, so there was obviously no issue with the topic being discussed. I wanted to find out more about it from the people it's obviously aimed at.

    But feck them now tbh.

    No

Maybe you should grow the f*ck up and stop generalising about Irish speakers based on what happened on a message board.

Having a fit and refusing to learn Irish because you weren't welcomed on a website... bloody hell.

Give me strength!!! Des Bishop seems to be getting along just fine in Connemara

Looking at the charter again, it assumes that anyone using English is probably trolling (but this isn't the case for you, you were only trying to learn).

And don't be upset by one mod and one user's opinion. To be honest, I'm very disappointed in them both, we aren't all like that.

If such rules are to be inforced, they should clarify this in the charter. I think I might translate simu's original post (which will probably get me banned, but will at least make things clearer for those who aren't fluent.)

Well, hear me out anyway, you might find it interesting. The radio station is currently only available online, but following some fantastic fundraising over Paddy's day, there are campaigns being put in motion for a FM application, but they'll more than likely only get DAB at this late stage in the game.

Conradh na Gaeilge run the station in collabaration with Digital Audio Productions (the people behind the popular 'Top 40 oifigiúil na hÉireann' on Spin1038 among other stations)

The majority of the TnaG Charter is in a language I don't understand.

The part I do understand said that English was ok, if it's not trolling or acting the tit. I wasn't doing either.

I wasn't asking about the language, per se.

I wanted to know about a specific topic, I did a search for it, found the topic being discussed in TnaG, I wanted to take part, so I checked if my taking part would be ok by the Charter, I understood that it would be, so I posted.

Next thing I know, there's a user telling me to piss off to AH, and one of the mods kicking my post into AH.

As I said, if the topic was a problem, fine, but it wasn't seemingly, the thread has been there for a few weeks.

I don't actually know what I did wrong.

Maybe a charter in a language the majority of users can understand would be the way to go.

Wouldn't mind improving my Irish for general multi-lingual value and usefulness with other Irish abroad, but it's not my language and I shouldn't be made to feel inferior or "less Irish" for not having gaeilge líofa orm, or whatever!

but couldnt be arsed to look up any word you dont know in a relatively simple charter - where it is quite obvious its an irish language forum

i dont go to a polish forum - and randomly type in english or irish etc , because its obvious by the name alobne even what is to be used there

Have you read the charter of the forum?

It clearly says that English is allowed if it's not trolling.

Which part of that do you not understand?

Yes, I'm Irish. My language is English. I'm not speaking your language. Or the historical language of the Irish people. I'm relatively inept in that language due to some awful schoolin'. But fortunately, given that it's not the functional language of the vast vast majority of my country, the language through which I learned my history, saw the country around me and formed my opinions as I was growing up, it's not my language, no matter how much you tell me it is.

Also, my Irish is just about good enough to see that if the teach na gcealt mods translate the original post in their charter, rather than having a less informative post in English below, people like DesF will be directed to the more suitable Irish forum for assistance, rather than being misled into thinking they can speak English on the Gaeilge AH.

Edit: ah, nevermind... Ronny Mitchell got to that already.

Oh the days when Irish was beaten into us......long gone alas. Beaten in one side of the head and out the other. Its no bloody wonder that many Irish people are so confused about the Irish language when it was associated with violence in our schooldays. Perhaps the future generations may embrace it as the likes of TG4 use the babes to sell it.

My sympathy to DesF, fluent Irish speakers are an arrogant lot, why though is the question?

His language is whatever language he considers his. Where hea was born has nothing to do with it.

I consider both English and Irish to be my languages (but that's because I was brought up with both). Your average Joe Soap (whether you like it or not doe not consider Irish his language. People don't like being forced to learn something they don't want to learn, and tbh I don't blame them.
