I told some Merkins that irish people actually detest that song and they were very surprised. So, I'd like to canvass opinion - do you like Danny Boy?

It's not like it's an Irish song (Well, okay, the tune might be).

i like it when my nan sings it, if it should be banned anywhere it should be 'The Dome' or whatever pit the ROT festival is held in

I depends on who sings it.
Personally I like the Marcel Marceau version.

My Mother used to sing it all the time. It's a lovely song.
I always think of her when I hear it. The lyrics are beautiful.

It's a truly appalling dirge written by an Englishman who never set foot in Ireland. I commend the owner of the bar in NY who has banned it for the month of March, but I don't think he's gone far enough.

This version is the only I've heard that I like.

Funnily enough, the guy in new york that banned it used to own a pub in cavan. this was one of the most pretentious "plastic oirish" bars ive ever seen in ireland! it even had a stuffed donkey with a basket of turf on the roof. a magnet for american tourists!

Exactly, the poll needs an Atari Jaguar option so those of us who don't care about the song one way or another can vote.

Somehow i find myself singing along to it, in a 5am lock in.
But then again ive heard people singing jingle bloody bells in the middle of August....
.. when their that merry and at that time of the morning, with that much pop, sure eerything is singable.

It was probably a half decent song long ago but it's been abused and b**tardised beyond repair.

Another song heading down the same road is the Fields of Athenry. Only a small select group who sing it well should be allowed sing it. When one of them dies, the remaining members elect a new member to do it justice.

My OH's uncle plays with a band which tours a lot. They were in America once and were asked to sing Danny Boy. Not one of the 5 or 6 lads on stage wanted to sing it cos they hated it. The Merkins were practically throwing money at them. So the uncle says feck it and sang it for the money. Earned about $400 for singing one song. (probably about $100. He's a fierce exaggerator)

I'm sure if it was sang by someone like Luke Kelly or someone of that ilk, it'd be fine. It's usually sang by irish-Americans with fake irish accents in a music hall style. I have no real like or dislike for it. I think Americans presume it's massive here like they do with "When Irish Eyes are Smiling". It's a non-entity here tbh.

    I hate it.

It's that sickening 19th century romanticising of the peasantry by the idle wealthy.

It's not even an Irish song.

    I hate it. X 1,000,000

Likewise - execpt with a y rather than an ie - been listening to it for 30+ years now and I detest it - people by me books about it, postcards etc I hate it - it should be banned forever.

Fair enough no more Danny boy.

    How about this one instead:

    "Daniel you're a star
In the face of the ski-i-ahi-y" :p

In fairness the tune has been around yonks. It predates the annoying Danny Boy lyrics I think. It's called the LondonDerry Air.

Hate it, and all the other drunken howling the drunks try to sing when they are bladdered when they reminisce about Past Ireland with tears in their eyes.

I find it most annoying that we have to stop talking to listen to this assault on our ear drums as it is deemed "disrespectful" not to listen when we are in the boozer. Good time to go check the plumbing in the mens though.

I used to miss the start of the Barry Mc Guigan fights because of his old fella warbling that song.

This thread's nearly a year old. Like Danny Boy, it should have been left to die.
