The Boards Summer Beach Body Super Challenge!

Believe it or not, summer is just around the corner. I know, I know the 150mph winds last night would lead you to think otherwise, but it's true!!

Now I don't know about anyone else, but I'm still trying to shed the last few of my Christmas lbs and having just arrived back from a two week stint in Australia where I was eating caramel and macadamia nut ice cream every day *drool* that task has become that teeny bit harder.

So I got thinking (always a dangerous thing for me tbh); maybe I'm not the only one who'd like a bit of an arse-kicking into getting myself in shape for the summer, maybe, just maybe, some of the other boardsie's want to do it to. So here I present to you the Boards Summer Beach Body Super Challenge! (Alliteration was never my forte...)

Actually there's no challenge as yet, I just wanted to see if you guys had any interest in it. Essentially it would be a set period where we'd all put 100% effort into our training and diet and we'd be able to provide support and feedback on a daily basis. We could start after Easter Weekend (come on, I'm a realist, I have a couple (+ 4) Easter eggs waiting for me at home too) but that would provide plenty of time to plan diet strategies, training schedules etc.

After outlining our goals right at the start each week for eight weeks (24th March - 19th May) we take measurements, photos - which you can of corse keep private-, bodyweight/ bodyfat etc and take note of training routines and eating habits. It could be like a communal training journal but with a defined beginning, middle and end (definitive timelines always encourage me more than open-ended ones, I'm impatient like that). And hey, who know's, I might even be able to rustle up some bribes incentives for the most improved participants...

Anyways, I could be talking out of my arse (shut it jsb :p) or it could be something that y'all are interested in. Whatcha think?

    I'm game,

I need a kick up the arse to get me training seriously and defined goals knowing others are at the same is something I'm well up for.

    Goals, more muscle less flab

I won't do it, as I'll be back fighting in the summer and should see ALL my abs again during that season. But I'll tell you what, I'll volunteer my services as a judge in the women's section?

I can be in shape by summer but i cant say which summer!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,122 ✭✭✭✭Jimmy Bottlehead

Aye I'm up for it... could do with lumping on another half a stone by middle of summer!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,602 ✭✭✭celestial

Great idea G'em and timely for two reasons

    1) It really IS nearly summer and let's face it, we take our t-shirts off far more in the summer time :D

    2) I too need something to give me more momentum and instil more discipline - if I am going to be held accountable on here it can only be a good thing.

Your generosity with your time knows no bounds :p

Great stuff everyone, hopefully we'll get a few folk on board and when I have an idea of the numbers who want to take part we can start with the planning!

Great idea! Nothing like a bit of competition (and fear of humiliation) to focus the mind.

Would the forum regulars be recommending programmes, advice etc based on the individual participants goals (a la "The Clinic" on T-Nation) or is it just everyone for themselves ?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 22,819 ✭✭✭✭g'em

Well I'll certainly help out with nutrition advice...

Yes, I just feel that the world has given me so much- looks, charm, physique- that it's time I gave something back. So ladies, let's start with the "before" pictures. Send them on and I might... eh... do some private viewings... though I'll probably wait until the "after" photos. G'em, you're first.

Ok. Count me in. I'm looking to get rid of my toothpick arms and concentration camp build. At least I have no fat to lose though which makes life a bit easier.:D No pain in the butt cardio, which I hate!!

    IN!!!

I have already posted up a log and my 3 month progress pictures, my diet is a little better, and I am crossfitting twice a week,

Goals which I idiotically did not put up on my log but I will edit are to be in good shape, look strong, and hopefully be quickish at sprint distance triathlons,

First triathlon is in 79 days in Athy so I wanna be in form for that at the end of may!!!

Would also love to take part in this, you can never have enough motivation!

actually I think I will throw my name in the hat for this one.

I haven't been in a gym for 5 weeks (the eyes still aren't fully up to it yet) but should be once I come back from NY for paddy's day. and prior to that injury meant I haven't been in the gym properly since chrimbo.

So I have been cutting anyway for the last 4 weeks and this could come in handy (well except for BGRH beers where I will be eating and drinking like there is no tomorrow)

edit: see I got through a whole post without commenting on your ass g'em

Count me in, was planning to do something similar after Easter anyhow, a little public humilation should be enough motivation to see it through :)

I'd like to try, but can't do exercise to save my life!! I have a good enough diet though(for an ordinary joe). Also I'm healing a fresh navel piercing atm, so swimming and any exercise that could possibly affect it are out for a good while.........................

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 617 ✭✭✭flynnser19

Alright, after further consideration i'm in too.

I'm in. I've spent too long skirting around the perimeter of putting 100% effort into my diet and training and hoping that i'd out-train late night snacking and beers.....and of course failing miserably.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 22,819 ✭✭✭✭g'em

would love to if level of fitness & strength isn't an issue?
not an issue at all, your fitness level is irrelevant, it's the effort you put in that counts ;)
I dont think eight weeks is long enough for my goals but I recken it do fo a start :D
Exactly, 8 weeks won't be enough to complete most people's 'big' goals, but it's a chance to give yourself a head start.
Also I'm healing a fresh navel piercing atm, so swimming and any exercise that could possibly affect it are out for a good while.........................
Walking, running, skipping, bodyweight exercises and a variety of other sporty-type stuff should be fine. We'll work around it!

No objection whatsoever, the more the merrier.

This is brilliant, it's great to see such a positive reactionf rom everyone!! I'll leave this open awhile to see who else wants to just on the wagon, and in the meantime everyone have a think about what your goals are - having a set goal makes it much easier to start eating well and exercising; after all how do you know which direction to go if you don't know what the destination is?

    /end cheesy pep-talk

I'm on holliers in April, but when I get back I will join in :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,393 ✭✭✭✭Vegeta

Well the main thing I want out of this is to reduce bodyfat while retaining muscle (duh!!!)

Secondary goals are to improve cardio fitness as I am really bad in this area, squatting again and I feel out of breath and faint after them :(

So I need to measure the bodyfat and take pictures. Anyone recommend a good calipers?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,122 ✭✭✭✭Jimmy Bottlehead

Its good, apparently the only one you can accurately use on yourself... might be BS though! But its good, and not expensive.

Does that mean the crack is goin sideways, rather than the more conventional "vertical" style? If so, careful not to go down any slides til it cheers up a bit!

As regards the challenge - I'm going to take the option of spectacularly chickening out of this one, although I do reserve the right to haze people who put pictures up with witty remarks like "Pffft, you've got no chance Pal. Take your free tshirt and go home!"

Which brings me to my next point: Will there be free tshirts??

If people want to charged an administrative fee (say €40) for taking part then we may be able to organise a free t-shirt:D

I'd love to join in - have made serious efforts since the start of January and while I've definitely gained muscle and feel much fitter.. I'm still 'soft'!! haha!! So.. setting a goal and making it happen is exactly what I need!!

    Thanks G'em!!
