[Achtung!] Airsoft Map of Ireland - Add your location

I threw this together in work today, basically it uses google maps to draw markers of where people are, you can add your own location too, simply find where you live on the map by either zooming in and moving around or enter your town address (probably best to keep it to the locality rather than pinpointing your exact address), type a comment if you wish (your username will suffice or if you want to leave a message saying if you can offer lifts for people that need them or somesuch) and hit the "Add Me!" button

When it's built up it'll be a useful way to find other skirmishers near you and it'll give a nice demographic of where everybody is from.

This is hosted on the IAA website, however it is for all airsoft players regardless of IAA membership, its just a shorter web address using irishairsoft.ie than it is using my personal server :)

Credit to Lethal_Bullet for the original suggestion of having a google earth map of everybody's location.

it's definitely not necessary to login, there's nothing in the page that requires you to be logged in to post.... that's very odd

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,414 ✭✭✭kdouglas

    follow the instructions.... :p

Either type your address in the bar at the top and hit go, or navigate the map to your location, make sure the map is centred on your location

Then type a comment if you wish and click "Add Me!"

Anyone can register for the website to post on the forums and reply to annoucements, this is open to the Public once they register which has no implication or link with IAA Membership.

    Yep.

Weird there must have been some time delay or something.
This morning I inserted my names twice once using IE and once using Firefox
    None appeared.

Now when I go to firefox the two labels appear fine.
(They dont appear on IE even though I do a page refresh so must
    be crap cache management)

you sound awfully familiar with that area yourself ? :p:p

Ah to be fair the marker is closer to the cop shop than the knocking shop.
Any way to remove the markers? I'm living outside of the city.

shouldn't need any time at all, once you click add, it should refresh the page and your marker should be there....

as i said to bullets, try hitting Ctrl-F5 incase it's a caching problem

centre the map on whichever marker you want removed, zoom right into it and leave a comment simply saying Delete

i'll then know which one it is because the co-ordinates will be the same and ill remove them

Bloody hell, boston and Vtec and unamed are like next door neighbours!

The two closest to me have no info attached, third is a tie between KD and liamo.

Hey dar, is your field covered from public view?:p

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,414 ✭✭✭kdouglas

Whoops, there was a slight bug that meant people were unable to add their location since sometime yesterday evening, it's fixed now though for anyone that was having problems.

    Cheers

I count 50-55 players on the map.
I reckon in terms of current airsoft customers, there's a least 10 times that amount out there, with possibly serveral times that in terms of potential customers.

There are currently 63 records in the database, easily 10 times more than that out there alright

Indeedly, I mustn't have zoomed in enough whilst counting :D.
Would be great to see what that map looks like in a few months time.

maybe change the title and add something like "ANTENTION" or something KD, as it is it just sounds like a map and not so much a collection of players.,

Interesting idea - I've added myself to it too. With a bit of work, you could expand this with recommended routes to sites, or have the sites as a separate Google Maps overlay with links to relevant web sites or other info - I know it's not what you're aiming for right now, but there's room for some great stuff to help the community there. Let me know if you need an extra hand, you probably know a lot more about AJAX and Google services than me, but every little bit helps, as Tesco says ;)

    Nice one.

Yeah, I was gonna do a .kmz affair which would allow all that kinda stuff but that would mean alot of manual entering. Keith suggested the API version which is much more accesible.

The one thing I would say is can you change the colour of the retailers and site KD? Haven't used the system so I dunno if its possible.

That's pretty much my plan, for now it just sticks a marker on everyone, but I will add extra information so that retailers and sites have a separate icon with a link to their website.

It would also be fairly easy to add a pop out link on the sites/retailers that would use the google maps main site to give you directions.

Am I the only one who thinks having more than the skirmish sites and retailers, i.e. providing fairly close geographical indications of where airsofters and their airsoft gear (which can be correlated using the gear photo thread) are, is not so hot an idea

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 17,163 ✭✭✭✭Boston

It is and it isn't. Depends on how close the mark is to their home. Apart from that it potentially handy for organising lifts and the like.

If somebody is so thick as to actually to mark their particular house then they deserve what they get.

While not so eloquently put, that's exactly right, I don't expect people to pinpoint their exact address on the map, I certainly didn't.

So someone makes a mistake on the internet, and they deserve to be robbed? I agree that no one is being forced to do this and its their own fault if they ignore the instructions clearly given by kdouglas, but they certainly don't deserve to get robbed. One thing you'll learn is that the Irish internet community is tiny and in my experience theres usually at most 3 degrees of separation between people.
