very impressive stuff..... if however ur technique is spot on and ur actually stimulating the right muscles when u lift, its really all about "mind muscle connection" for me rather den weight, but good stats

thanks, yeah form is spot on all the time

I reckon my bench could be higher but I never have a spotter so I am afraid to push up

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 23 jumbopalumbo

yeah, its alot easier/safer to go to failure on a dumbbell press, u could switch for a few weeks den go back to barbell, its a great way to break tru a plateau

Two pretty cool users names i must say.

    And yes, you are strong.

Do you keep a log of your workouts? It's best to stay competitive only with yourself at the end of the day....use the attempts to beat previous lifts and workouts to fuel you on but don't pay too much attention to what others are moving around you.

Sure, if there is a big strong dude in your gym moving tonnes of weight then sweat, use it for inspiration but don't get hung up on it.

Develop at a good healthy pace, injury free, and i would say you have some very good potential based on your numbers right now.

    Strong like bull.

    Are your lifts strict?

    -Squatting deep?
-Benching without a spotter touching the bar, no bounce and ass on the bench?
-Curl done strictly? (ie not a reverse grip powerclean?)

Here is crossfits "standards", which are high standards IMO

Have you really only been working out for a year? Do you know your body fat% or even a guess.

Yes everything done well my brother taught me how to lift

Squats are done to the bench I dont go lower because I don't feel confident without a spotter and on bench I have no spotter but dont bounce and I am flat on bench.

Curls are done strictly I concentrate on making sure my back is straight and I am not swinging

You will need somewhere to host them. Who's you network provider?

As for your routine, looks good. Normally i would say something about cutting back on the arm work but i'm not sure in this case, your numbers tell me otherwise! :D

    Sunday - REPEAT
You mean you repeat legs on sunday? Or your whole workout for the week?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32,386 ✭✭✭✭rubadub

hey does anyone know how to get pictures from your fone onto the net
    you can go here http://imageshack.us/
and upload it, after doing that it will show another page with a small version of the picture. Now cut and paste the URL (address at the top) into your message,

when you post a message there is a place to put images, it is a little yellow box with a landscape. or just put the URL in

EDIT: I just tried something that worked. if you are on gmail you can just email the photo to yourself. now open the mail and right click on the image you forwarded to yourself, now click "copy image location" or "properties" and copy the URL. Now you can just paste this in.

Lets be serious about this any average joe breaking 100ks on a bench is doing well, anyyone breaking 120 is doing very well and anyone breaking 140+ is Hanley............................

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 21,981 ✭✭✭✭Hanley

To be honest, everyone should be able to bench 100kg with a few years of training under their belt. One of the lads I train with is 20, 75kg and has benched 100 for 5 or 6 after about 3 years of training so bodyweight and age sholdn't be be considered a limiting factor!!

I benched 100kg within 18-24 months of first starting too. I think I was about 80kg at the time. And it's not even like I was THAT strong when I first started. I think about 40x2 was my best, and I was still a good bit away from 50kg.

If you've got a sensible program and are consistent with it then it's not an insurmountable goal by any stretch of the imagination. And once you get to that level you should have a decent enough idea of what it takes to start putting up more weight.... So onwards to 120!!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 29,930 ✭✭✭✭TerrorFirmer

Is 80kg curl disportionately strong with a bench of 130? I'm currently at 2x105 and my curl works out at about 43% of my bench, whereas this instance works out at about 61/62%...

Very impressive stats, but the 80kg curl just hit me straight off...

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,448 ✭✭✭Roper

I'm not mega strong, not a serious lifter and I can bench 95 and if I put my mind to it, would probably break 100 in a few weeks. I would agree with Hanley.

For the average person, bodyweight would be good though.

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 21,981 ✭✭✭✭Hanley

Yeah that sounds abotu right TF, my curl comes out around 45% of my bench (assuming that my 5rm on curls is 85%). Maybe he just works the hell out of them tho. Wouldn't be the first time someone had an exceptional lift that really stood out from the others.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,887 ✭✭✭WHIP IT!

Hmmm, this is all making me feel very good about myself - I work my bench up from empty bar to 105kg x 5 and then x 3 at the minute. Which would make my 1RM about 118kg I think according to a link someone provided here in recent weeks. I am about 92kg... So that's pretty good then, right?

Yippee... I'm off to look at myself in the mirror and say "You the Man" a few times...

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 29,930 ✭✭✭✭TerrorFirmer

Yep it's good. Personally I think anything over about 90kg is impressive, regardless of how much I can lift myself. I don't think it would take a few years to get to 100kg either (and going on the assumption that you started at 30/40kg rather then naturally very strong through labor etc). I've been going to the gym for about 2 years but for most of that, I was always conscious of my weight having been a former lard ass. So my stats never really went up, because I simply wasn't even eating enough to sustain myself, let alone bulk up. These days I don't care much and I'd be lying if I said most of the weight I've put on wasn't pure fat, but since starting to eat right (in relation to bulking up, not a healthy perspective) and get excessive nutrition in I have gone from about 60kg to 105kg (x2, so I'm sure my 1rm is closer to 110) bench in a few months.

If your doing german sets? ie 10x10 at 70kg I'd say you had a fair bit more in your tank than 95kg in all fairness, unless you were giving yourself 2/3 minute breaks would you not be knackered by the 6th/7th set?

Not doubting you for one second mind just saying! Different strokes for different folks and all that.

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 21,981 ✭✭✭✭Hanley

Sounds like german volume training alright. I'd never get thru 10x10 with 73% of my max. I'd probably die after the 3rd set. I might get away with 65-68%, even if you were using 68% your max would only have been around 102.5kg so it's still a huge improvement and one I would go on a mass murder spree for.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,887 ✭✭✭WHIP IT!

I would've had a similiar improvement in almost the identical timeframe - but, like the guys pointed out - it was more the fact I was knackering myself my doing several sets of 10 at 40, 50, 60, 70, 80 then bottoming out around 90kg. So my max was probably always more than I thought it was.

When I see all that in print on front of me, I can't believe I didn't realise I was doing too much in the 'warm-up' stage... It was only when Hanley pointed it out here, I was like "D'Oh! How did you not see that?"

The very next time I was able to go up about 10kg I think by dropping all sets down to x5 and leaving out the 40kg stage.

i think ive always had more endurance strength than all out balls to the floor strength.............how ever should clarify this my 95kg at the time was normal grip the 10x10s were close grip..........my triceps always seem to be able to handle greater weight that my pecs...saying that i do no tricep isolation stuff...maybe im just odd..... TBH if doing the ten by tens i never used to take that long for rest periods generaly... id be ruined after 4-5 sets but always got a second wind around set 7... still by set nie and ten id be bursting vessels for the last few reps..........didnt say it was easy but it worked.........
also there 10 days ago i went for 117.5 on a max day after a rest for 2 days and was buried yet a day later went in and was just feeling strong as went straight from 110 to 120 not a bother.... i know this sounds mad but not having a spotter seems to give me the extra bit of drive...that and a nice t-shirt!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 11,333 ✭✭✭✭itsallaboutheL

also whip it im very like you in that i've to work up like that no matter what im doing just to have the confidence that ill be able to lift the next one its odd...and prob doesnt help.... hanly on a comp day how would u warm up to hit ur max?

If I was going for 140...

    60x5
    80x3
    100x2
    110x1
    120x1
    130x1

If I was going for 180....

    60x5
    80x3
    100x2
    110x2
    120x1
    140x1

Is the point of gvt not to finish all reps, rather than to use a certain percentage of your max? within reason of course. But surely even 60% would present a decent challenge by the time you hit 80 or 90 reps?

Also S=e you look plenty big for your lifts and for the length of time you are lifting. (jealous).

OP, your curl does seem massive compared to your bench, even for a bloke who is 15 stone!

There is some very interesting facts/thoughts on bench progress in this thread. It makes me think that I'm doing alright. I've been hitting the gym for about 18 months and started benching about 6 months ago. I'm just gone 22, 5'6", weigh about 71Kg and I got my 1 rep max on the bench of 115kg a few weeks ago, so I'll be going for 120kg soon.

    Cool username.

TBH its hard to tell if there's really much of a change. The lighting is totally different in both pics. Looking big nd lean in both pics though.... you b4stard covered b4stard with b4stard filling (jealous:mad:).

How long have you been cutting for and whats your typical daily diet like? Also do you find it harder to train on a cut and what supps do you use??

It looks like you have a real powerlifters chest, I would say to either stay away from barbell pressing for a while and concentrate on dumbells or just make sure you flare your elbows right out and keep your arms wide on the bar so you try and eliminate your (very strong looking) triceps taking over. It really depends what you are going for, powerlifting or bodybuilding?

    Hey,

Diet usually goes something like this

    Breakfast
    4 scrambled eggs

    11am
    Steak

    1pm
    3 hardboiled eggs
    2 bacon

    4pm
    2 burgers

    5pm
    50g Protein shake

    7pm
    Steak

    9pm
    50g Protein shake

    10pm
    2 burgers/chicken fillet

Basically zero carbs and high in fat and protein. I have one cheat meal once a week where I completely overload on carbs usually get a large pizza on a Saturday night which keeps me sane and allows me something to look forward to during the week when I am dieting.

I play rugby but my school's season is over so I am hoping to play U20s club next year but obviously I am going to have to get much bigger to play forward for U20s so after the summer I am thinking of doing a bulk.

I've been cutting for around 3-4 weeks now, diets posted above.

A lot of people ask me if I find it harder to train but I really dont notice much. the first few days are quite difficult but after that its fine as of now I am just as energetic as I was when I was taking in carbs and more calories and my strength is pretty much the same.

Currently taking Whey Protein, fish oils and multivitamins but I am considering going on Creatine ethyl ester

    Hey, thanks for the advice.

I am currently doing reps on bench within the 3-6 rep range would this explain why my chest looks like a powerlifters chest

And I am still undecided about whether to do powerlifting or bodybuilding I think I am leaning towards bodybuilding though because I dont really think I am strong enough for powerlifting to really give it a go [My squat is weak and my deadlift is average mainly strong in chest, shoulders and arms]

Very rash decision to make at your age dude after following what i can only figure out is a relatively unstructure planned and reaching fantastic shape and strength. Believe me mate, i would have killed nuns to look like you do at 18!

Very rash decision to make at your age dude after following what i can only figure out is a relatively unstructure planned and reaching fantastic shape and strength. Believe me mate, i would have killed nuns to look like you do at 18!

Your only young, lots of time under the bar ahead of you yet bro!

Hey dragan could you give me an idea of what lifts I should be getting for my weight and age in order to compete in an irish strongman and not look like an eejit [:pac:] Obviously I know I'm going to have to make a massive improvement on all lifts but I might just try it out.

    What weight are you now??

I dunno anything about strongman but if you're interested in powerlifting then here's the page with all the results from competitions in the IDFPA and here's the page of all their records .

The IDFPA(Irish Drug Free Powerlifting Association) is an affiliate to the WDFPF(World Drug-Free Powerlifting Federation) and is probably the most popular association at the moment in Ireland.

Other federations in Ireland would be the IPO, the IPF and the GPC.
