Whats wrong with the port tunnel? afaik it has done its intended task of taking lorries off the streets of dublin
Well it's certainly done what it set out to do. What I was referring to was the mess involved during its construction - causing property damage due to not being dug deep enough and then when it was done they realised it was too low.

There was no particular mess during construction, compared to similar projects. It was dug at the correct depth.

Some minor damage was caused to some houses and repairs accounted for something like 0.2% of the budget. Only two houses had material damage and both were houses with extensions.

No, it was constructed at the correct height. Some hauliers wanted to use taller vehicles and these are accommodated. Those taller vehicles would also have issues with many road, rail and other bridges and over head wires for DART and Luas.

Hmmm I wonder how well built those extensions were and if the foundations were all they could have been.

But on a project with a nine-figure budget it's just easier (and cheaper) to pay out and make a couple of claims go away rather than get dragged through the courts.

We seem to have a fear of anything "new" in this country, for all the high-tech image we try to show the world. Tunnels - ooh no can't have them, our houses will collapse  but of course 150 years ago Irishmen were digging tunnels all over Britain!

    Life ain't always empty.
