So, I'm doing martial arts training last night. One of the girls arrived a few mins late. When we were having a water break I was gently ribbing her about her lack of dedication to the cause etc by turning up late.

So she says "yea, I was running late because I had to put my makeup on".

    "?????"

"I never leave the house without makeup"

    "??????"

Now, I didn't even notice she was wearing makeup. So it occured to me that loads of women could be wandering around all wearing makeup.

Is this normal? She claims it is. Are there actually lots of women who won't leave the house without makeup?

If so, why is it? This woman is married, so she's not looking to attract guys. is it insecurity?

What's goin on here, ladies? :p

I do know a lot of girls who wouldn't go anywhere without make-up on. i find it strange, i don't even wear it to work. I'd rather sleep in then get up earlier to put make-up on. I wear it at the weekends or if I'm going out but i wouldn't go out of my way to wear it or be late for something because i needed to put it on. It's madness!

Yes there are women like that.
Even if they don't have the full on glam look they at least have on consealer, tinted moistureisr, lippy and eyeliner.

I've seen my own mother doing it and topping it up to walk in the dark to the postbox at the edge of her estate and mother's droping thier kids to school

Personaly I don't wear make up daily, infact I would hate to have to, it's usually 2/3 times a month if going out but I have skin sensativity issues anyway.

I wear make-up all the time. I feel I look a little less ugly with it. :o

Somedays I wear it, somedays I don't. It just depends on my humour

My sister, wont leave the house without makeup,

It doesnt bother me though, i like to wear it when I am going out, thats about it..

Have started to wear makeup a bit less recently. I would not wear it to the gym or to a dance class etc. However, I do feel rather naked without it. If I'm not leaving the house I wouldn't wear it either and I wouldn't put it on to go to the shop (anymore!).

However, I do wear it to work, going shopping and on nights out. I would wear very little during the day (light, daytime type makeup just to look a bit fresher) and at night I'd put a little more work into the eye shadow etc. I never cake it on and it always looks natural enough. Always matches my skin tone perfectly so I don't look orange or anything. I don't really see the harm in it. Only takes 5 minutes!

However, wearing makeup to a martial arts class is just stupid because you'll sweat it off and look a mess at the end!

I think for me it is a lot to do with insecurity. I just look and feel better when I have a little bit of makeup on tbh. I feel a bit scruffy without it. Plus, I'm extremely pale and look a bit pasty unless I freshen up my face a bit.

Yeah....me too. it might be in my head but i think im one of those people who looks very different without make up.
Some days i dont wear it into work and i always get at least one person saying "You look Tired/sick/pale/....are you alright??" FOOK OFF!! i hate it.
i only ever had one friend though who thought i looked real different without make up. or maybe the rest are all just liars trying to be nice.
so anyway. i could go without in work if i wanted but if im going anywhere else i have to put some on. even if its only a bit.

my friend is like that. I know her a couple of years before she let me see her without makeup. In her case its no longer a choice cus she wore alot of makeup when she was younger, used cheap makeup and didn't take it off correctly so she has really bad skin now [I get the impression it wasn't to great to start with but she says its alot worse now] She physically can't go outside without makeup. Honestly I didn't notice a difference but its her face and if it makes her feel more confident let her off - only pisses me off when we need to go somewhere in a rush and we have to take 40mins out for her to put her face on.

I don't wear makeup ever so I don't get the whole thing, would rather spend the money on something else but like I said if it makes her feel better about herself then I don't have any issue with her or anyone else for that matter wearing it.

I know so many girls like that...I just laugh at them. I shouldn't really cos it's quite sad to think that they have such a lack of self-confidence they daren't let anyone see them in their natural skin.
I only wear make-up if I'm going out or something. I just could not be arsed putting it on every day. Plus my skin would be in crap condition. Not to mention the expense. People who wear it every day day must be spending a ridiculous amount

i know someone who wouldn't tie her hair back in Public never mind no Make up. infact, i'd imagine she's the type of girl who doesn't leave her room without make up even if she's only going to sit on the couch.
she used to play hurling and apparently she'd wear full make up to that aswell. madness. and a friend who knows her alot longer saw her answer the door in casual trackie bottoms once and said he nearly dropped dead.
i couldnt put in that effort. im not the type who can dress up every day. i like my comfort too much.

thats a little harsh! some people like wearing make-up and making an effort. I wouldnt say you were laughable and sad for the fact that you dont wear make-up every day??

thats your main reason Id say! and you dont have to spend a ridiculous amount at all.. a tinted moisturiser doesnt set you back much!

    speaking of tinted moisturiser....

Is it that good?? what type do ya use?? coz i have one thats Craperoo it does NOTHING!

  • Moderators, Science, Health & Environment Moderators Posts: 6,376 Mod ✭✭✭✭Macha

I wear tinted moisturiser every day because 1) it's a moisturiser & 2) it's got SPF of 30. Also, I'm blonde so sometimes I use an eyebrow pencil & maybe mascara. If I were a brunette I wouldn't.

Donegal Lass - why would someone be laugable and sad because they don't wear make-up every day? I think it's sad when people get to the point where they can't leave the house without make-up - I would consider it something of a dependency issue...

Anyone here have a boyfriend/male friend that wears makeup? Or is that still off in the far-distant future? My OH won't even buy moisturiser but funnily enough he's quite happy for me to buy it for him...and put it on him...

+1 that you're being quite harsh here. Bit OTT.

I wear make up everyday in work, I've to present myself well in my job as I'm constantly meeting clients. It's nothing to do with self confidence. I know I look better with make up on, I'd be pale without it. That's not putting myself down it's just a fact. I'm so used to wearing it that I'd wear it on the weekends too when I go out. Lounging around the house / popping to the shops I wouldn't bother cos I'm feeling too lazy. My skin isnt in bad condition at all. Out of my friends I probably have the clearest skin. I don't spend a ridiculous amount on make up at all. I could be spending the money on a lot worse!

I have used the no7 No.7 Soft & Sheer tinted moisturiser and its €12.50
from boots, I thought that was ok!

I use the Benefit "You Rebel" tinted moisturiser now and find it goos! its €30.00 but I like it and it lasts ages!

But everyones skin is different and what might work for me may not for you?!

I don't ever wear make-up either and don't think I'm any better or worse off because of it. I do have friends though that i have never seen without make-up and I have no idea what they look like naturally. It's the same with fake tan, go back 6 or 7 years and it wasn't as common for people to wear it so much, it was only for a night out etc, but now it's part of the make-up routine for some, there are plenty of girls I know that I have never seen without fake tan.

    +1!!

As per earlier comments that people could think of better things to spend their money on I don't agree. I love buying cosmetics, it's a real treat and I'm quite fussy about what I put on my skin so I only buy the best.

It's just laziness that stops me from wearing it to work. I do wear make-up if I've a meeting/important interview. I completely understand if other people are less lazy then me and make themselves put it on in the morning. I used to do it when I got in to work/on the dart (funny looks there) but I've recently stopped bothering doing that! poor lazy watna!

Can I ask does anyone here look for organic make-up/beauty products?

It seems that a lot of people are concerned about buying the best or about their skin etc & so it would make sense to buy products without a list of chemicals as long as your arm?

Are you actually implying that the only reason I don't wear make-up every day is laziness??! Seriously...come on. That is utterly ridiculous. I don't wear make-up every day because I have enough self-confidence and know that I don't need make-up to be pretty. A lot of people don't believe that about themselves, which is why they won't let anyone see them without it.

......................I could be spending the money on a lot worse!

I don't think it's over the top at all. I'm not talking about people who wear it to work or out to dinner or whatever. I'm talking about the girls who actually fear people seeing them without make-up, the girls like the one the OP mentioned, who put it on to go to a martial arts class or going for a jog or going to buy a pint of milk. As one poster said, they actually depend on the make-up and it demonstrates a severe lack of self-confidence. And yeah, they could spend their money on much worse....they could also spend it on a therapist to sort out whatever issues they have causing them to feel that their natural beauty is inadequate.

But surely if this was the case then nearly every woman would be running to therapists! If you're one of the rare girls that are 100% happy with their appearance (body included) then fair play to you because you are in the minority.

Lots of people every day have surgery to fix what they see as inadequacies be it their face, their bum, their breasts or whatever. So I just think that in the grand scheme of it all a little make-up every day isnt really such a bad thing!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,256 ✭✭✭metaoblivia

I used to wear make up only when going out with friends in the evenings or on weekends. I'm fine with how I look without make up, but it does make you look better. And it's incredibly fun. I see the face as a canvas and it's interesting the different looks you can achieve.
However, my job back then was very casual: I showed up to work every day in jeans, flip flops, a t shirt, hair back, no make up.
Now I work for a high end office in downtown Boston. We don't have casual dress on any day of the week. I'm always dressed professionally, and have to have my hair and make up done nicely. Usually on the weekends, I run errands and go to the gym, so there's no point in wearing make up. But if I go out and meet friends, I'll put some on.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 51 ✭✭CrazyPolly

I don't agree that nearly every woman can't bear the thought of people seeing her without make-up and they're the ones I'm talking about. The people who won't step outside the door without foundation & mascara & blusher & lipgloss. I am most definitely not 100% happy with my appearance, but, there are varying degrees od dissatisfaction. And I think any woman who is that ashamed of their face in it's natural state has a problem. It's like, ok...you can be unhappy with your breasts, fine. But if you only ever wear baggy tops for fear of someone seeing them or won't let a guy see you topless, then it's a problem.
And I agree, wearing make-up all day every day mightn't seem as severe as having surgery but at the end of the day, it's the same underlying issue driving people to such things....severe lack of confidence in their natural body.

Lots of people have irrational fears, for some girls it's people seeing them with no make up on. They shouldnt be laughed at or told to go see a therapist. They're not freaks they just prefer to look their best. Does nothing freak you out? spiders? heights? blood?

I still do think you're a bit OTT, there's a big difference between slagging people off and voicing your opinion. I voiced my opinion without saying that I think people who don't wear make up are freaks. And no I don't think that.

I agree with people who have said about wearing it all the time because of acne.

I have bad acne, well more bad flare ups and I'm completely paranoid about my skin. I also have quite faint eye brows so i have to pencil alot of them in. I just feel that even though my skin is sh*t that i gives me a little more confidence as opposed to when i was younger and not into make up and my acne was 5 times worse that i wouldn't go anywhere or do anything which affected my social life etc.

So I am a sports coach, I am coaching in a few hours. I will be wearing make up, it might sound ridiculous to some people but some little kids have in the past said "what's that on your face?" or "why do you have loads of big spots?" etc in regard to my acne and it does get me down. When training myself I will wear make up.

Have to say I love makeup – where would we be without it?? :) I sometimes feel sorry for guys not being able to hide their hangover faces :p I’ve always been very pale so got used to using it at an early age and yeah like anything that you do a lot that makes you feel better it becomes a habit.

Gym, working out etc – makeup a BIG no no. Popping to the shop for 10 minutes is a bit pointless too. Wear it to work, nights out etc.
