    Ok Girls,

    Another movie question.

    There are some old films not recent ones..... lets make the rule before the year you were born...

    Films you want your daughters to see

    4 girls and not one has said "Some like it hot"!!!

    So is it only us guys that like that movie? I like it because it comforts me to know that sometimes it really is okay to dress up as a woman...:eek:

    Best old film ever. Its just so damn tense and even now when Pighead watches it he finds himself shouting at that loud mouthed fool to shut the fcuk up and listen to Davis.

    Some Like It Hot, definitely. Best film ever made.

    Tony Curtis (a louche sax player with a gamey eye) and Jack Lemmon (his anxious friend the double-bass player, constantly dragged wailing into Curtis's schemes) witness the St Valentine's Day Massacre and have to go on the lam.

    But it's 1929, the Great Depression is in full swing, and they owe money everywhere, and there's no work for impoverished musicians who have just pawned their coats.

    Until, that is, they overhear their agent looking desperately for a sax player and a double-bass player for a *women's* band to play the season in Florida.

    The two dress up as ladies (strangely convincing) and get on the train with the band ("My girls are all virtuosos, and I aim to keep it that way") - which includes Marilyn Monroe, a ditsy singer who always falls for louche sax players.

    It just gets more complicated, and funnier, from there on until the perfect, perfect last line. Brilliant, brilliant, wonderful film.

    Love Singing in the Rain too - especially the beginning, when the toothy star is describing a youth of wealth and glamour, intercut with images of two scuffy urchins being booted out of low dives where they danced for pennies.

    Everything that Ghibli Studios has done - especially My Neighbour Totoro, Spirited Away and the dark Grave of the Fireflies.

    The Japanese version of Godzilla, which is called Gojira - not one to watch again and again, but impressive even so.

    French Connection 2, when a New York cop is captured in Marseilles by drug kingpins and addicted to heroin. Haven't seen French Connection.

    Howard's End - about marriage; fine film.

    Little Miss Sunshine.

    O Brother, Where Art Thou?

    Ragtime - about the 1920s in America, and a proud man who can't back down.

    Rififi.

    Scent of Green Papaya, a Zen film set in Vietnam.

    La Reine Margot, about the St Bartholemew's Day Massacre, Good King Henry (Henri IV of France) and Catherine de Medici and her creepy sons.

    Saoirse, with superb use of documentary footage and a brilliant score; apparently there's a subtitled version out now. Spot the 1916 leaders, not always spotted by the commentary.

    Tampopo, about learning an art, in this case, how to make perfect noodle soup.

    Time Bandits - every kid who comes to my house (if old enough not to be scared) watches this.

    I dont think Little Miss Sunshine is counted as "old" - its only been out 2 years.

    I love The Third Man - one of my favourite films ever.

    Yes, The Third Man is a masterpiece. It's an example of how story and style can sweep away the pretentions of Hollywood flash.

    i think the only film i know done before i was born is Withnail and I. and i would like to think my kids (touch wood that one doesnt happen) didn't see that for a good while... god forbid they should ever turn out like me or my b/f.... :P

    Dunno when it was made but One Flew over the Cuckoos Nest, and while Im on Jack Nicholson films the Shining as well.

    Musicals: the original Willy Wonka, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang (Im still afraid of the childcatcher) and like everyone else The Wizard of Oz.

    Some may have been made after I was born, but I am an auld wan.

    There's something about sitting down to an old movie I find much more of a challenge than something that's been out in the last 30 years. I wonder what that is :confused:

    When I do sit down to one I always really enjoy it too, need to do it more often.

    My faves:

    Some Like It Hot - very funny :)
    It's a Wonderful Life
    Harvey
    Any Charlie Chaplin film, but I love City Lights

    I also love Tony Hancock's BBC radio/television series, has anyone seen it? It's really funny, and the Hancock character is just brilliant. Something really soothing about the show as well, in fact I showed it to my boyfriend and he now puts it on at night to help him drift off to sleep - bless :P
