Oh this is the best update ever! No more making room for the laptop beside the TV and I can put the VGA cable into cold storage. Now if only there was something new to watch!!!

Question on the ps3 setup. Can you assign it an IP and then ftp stuff right onto the hdd ala xbmc, or do you have to use usb hard discs and the like to play files?

I downloaded the latest upate to a memory stick as I dont have the internet at home, stuck it in the playstation and it downloaded no problem to the playstation. But then I went to system settings to switch on enable wma playback but went I select to switch it on after a few seconds it says that no ethernet cable is connected? Do i need one in order to turn it on? I thought you could just download the update to the memory stick and that would work. Any help appreciated.

You need internet connection to enable WMA / WMV playback.

Its the same for PSP also.

Depends on how the hard drive is formatted (right click on it in my computer and go to properties)
If it's FAT32, then you're ready to rock. If it's NTFS, it won't work without wiping the HDD completely and formatting it as FAT32

I'm VERY impressed with it so far anyway, movies look superb on the big screen, and the animated thumbnails are cool, plus being able to copy files to the PS3's hard drive is handy... I'll definitely be using the PS3 as my main media player instead of my 360

also make em look better closer to dvd quality on tv as closer to native ,my res on monitor set high could just change it but, no.
notting to do with ps3 but still nice.
most stuff i have on ps3 hdd is h264(better than divx?xvid) but this means no converting to watch on big screen
still going to convert the stuff i want to keep on ps3 in to h264

Mines NTFS and I put two xvids on it tonight to see if they would play , hit the triangle , choose show all files , and it showed them and played them no problem.
Cool update , Ive been trying to find its limits but the only thing it wouldnt play so far were ipod formatted files. Everything else Ive tried so far has worked , AVI's , Divx , Xvid etc.

    Are you sure about that?
I find it hard to believe that the xbox won't recognise Microsoft's own file system, but the PS3 will...
I'll give my external drive a test tomorrow anyway, would be damn handy if you're right

Downloaded this last night so could play pro street online. It killed my system.Wouldn't load up screen. Luckly only got it last month when price dropped so wnet back into the shop. As i left controller and cables at home had to go home for them.(A Game store without cables something fishy here). Dropped it back it and half hour later on way home when i relaised that the had fobbed me off with a 40gb version without telling me. Very irate the third time back into the shop. Did get a few games as compensation but still 40gb wont play ps2 games. I now have expensive Frisbees. Pain in the hole having to redo games to get back to where i was in them.

    Two morals of the story:
    (1)Beware when downloading this update.
    (2)Buy an xbox.

i can play the music fine on my external usb2 hard drive, but its not picking up and videos

do i have to have them in a specific folder on the hard drive? there in E:\Movies at the moment. the music is in E:\Music and it picks them up fine. i dunno. is there something im missing? maybe change the folder name from E:\video?

You should be able to navigate the folders if you hit the triangle button and select show all.

ooooh! If it can read NTFS now thats awesome! :)

Is there anyway to stream xvid / divx to it? without having to transcode?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 52 ✭✭_PCahill_

yeh..divx's/xvids can just be streamed over your lan using whatever mediaserver software you like....works a treat

    Hi,

finding it hard to get my ps3 to recognise my external harddrive, it's not showing up at all. I have a usb key that's working fine. The HDD is NTFS formatted if that makes a difference.

    Thanks

Your hard drive needs to be formatted in FAT32 for the PS3 to pick it up. It will not recognise NTFS drives.

yeah i confirmed this too, must be FAT32

Cool thanks lads. Thats disappointing. I saw some other guy had his NTFS drive working in this thread...

Is it possible to parition the drive and format the other half to FAT32?

Right , just verified that , I have a WD passport external drive , the usb powered 160GB version , it only has one partition and its NTFS , I have some movies on it , and the dashboard on the PS3 reads it , no problem , Im positive about this ,

The only other thing I have loaded that might have enabled this is YDL ,maybe thats has something to do with it , that reads it too when I have it loaded up , but linux has been able to read NTFS for ages.

  • Subscribers Posts: 6,408 ✭✭✭conzy

are you 100% sure its NTFS? most removable drives come formatted FAT32...

If you can read NTFS, maybe there is just a limitation to the size of the NTFS drive the PS3 can read... I tried with a NTFS 400gig drive...

But im nearly sure you're crazy and your drive is actually FAT32 :p

I've a similar drive ,160GB WD USB drive and it works fine.
Plays mpeg /mp3 etc. It's listed as 160GB WD Drive.

I've been trying to update my PS3 with this update for the last few days now and still no luck.

Don't have a proper broadband connection so I've been using a memory stick formatted to FAT32.

Anytime i search for a System Update from storage media it say none found.

I've tried numerous ways of saving the file on the memory stick; on its own; in a folder called 'PS3', etc and also tried the same on a DVD-RW.

How easily should the PS3 pick up this file or does anybody know what i'm doing wrong??

Has to be in folder "PS3/UPDATE".

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,388 ✭✭✭✭r3nu4l

Okay I downloaded update 2.10 and loaded up a CD-R with a DivX file on it. The PS3 recognises that a disc is present, tells me the file name and size but refuses to play citing "Unsupported format".

I then load the DivX CD into my PC and it plays the file fine so it's not a disc problem.

I've tried this with several DivX files to no avail...any suggestions?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,064 ✭✭✭nedd

this could be that the PS3 doesnt support all DivX encoding formats. i have a 500gb hard drive loaded with divX's and not all of them play. its kind of annoying. cause i dont know until i decide which i want to watch whether it will work or not.

Cheers Beekay. Do you know if you can watch the videos on the website without having to download them? Like in the browser.
