    Changelog here:
A Voice Changer feature has been added to the Voice and Video Chat menu. If you want more information visit eu.playstation.com and consult the "Voice Changer" guide included in the "Help and Technical Assistance for PS3" section.

This feature allows you to change the tone of the sound originated by audio devices, like microphones. It has 5 preset levels and a bass and (what's the opposite of bass? :p) scale.

You can alter the tone while using the Voice and Video chat options available in "Friends"

    Other 2.10 stuff

    Music

    - Now you can select the options [Type 3] in Settings > Music Settings > Bitmapping. This bitmapping process has been designed exclusively for the PS3 with the goal of improving the audio reproduction.

    Video

    - DivX y VC-1 WMV are now compatible. *
    - The system is now compatible with the Profile 1.1 Blu-ray Disc. **
    - A [BD data tool] option has been added ***

    - To play VC-1 (WMV) files you will need to select the option [Activate WMA reproduction], available in the Settings > System Settings
    - It's not possible to play copyrighted files or files compressed with DivX 3.11
    - It's not possible to play files bigger then 2GB
    **
    - Now you have several additional features, like the simultaneous reproduction of the videos in the Blu-ray Disc compatible with the 1.1 Profile. The available features vary depending on the disc.
    ***
Stores the management data used by the Blu-ray Disc.

Where are you getting that from? I'd thought we'd get a near full DivX codec pack.

Hardly a big deal anyway Xvids not so common as to cause problems.

Nice. I look forward to upgrading.

Over on the UK PlayStation site they've laid out the details on firmware 2.10, which should be releasing tomorrow according to the date listed with the article. Among the interesting new features is a voice changer, with the power to make you sound like a person using a voice changer with five presets over hi and low tones. Other features include a new music bitmapping process specifically designed for the PS3 to provide enhanced audio playback, support for Blu-ray disc profile 1.1 for picture-in-picture goodness, and the long-awaited support for DivX and WMV playback. DivX playback is limited to non-copyrighted material under 2GB, and DivX 3.11 and earlier encoding is not supported. Unfortunately XviD is still not supported, which means that people with a large number of anime fansubs (not naming any names here) will have to stick to computer viewing for the time being. *sigh*

    From kotaku.com

And XviD are very common actually.

****ing Sony short changing us again.

I don't want to have to watch XviD on my 360 as it sounds like a 747 about to take off.

PS3 is a lot quieter and is much more viable as a media player.

I think you will find tomorrow that all your XviD files will play perfectly tomorrow.
A certified DivX DVD player plays XviD files fine and so will PS3, i believe will you find that Engadget are wrong.
DivX=XviD. XviD is the open-source equivalent of commercial DivX codec.

    Direct from XviD wiki:
Xvid encoded files can be written to a CD or DVD and played in a DivX compatible DVD player. However, Xvid can optionally encode video with advanced features that most DivX Certified set-top players do not support. Files encoded with global motion compensation, Qpel, MPEG quantization, multiple B-frames or files that exceed the VBV limitations may not play back properly on DivX Certified hardware devices.

Looking forward to testing it out tomorrow
The xbox doesn't exactly have 100% playback of xvid files either, so i'd assume it'll play a similar amount of files...

Very nice addition , if it keeps going like this there wont be any need to be loading linux all the time ,

    Nice one.

You ever download a TV show off the web? 99% are in .avi format but the innards of the file are mp3 sound and divx/xvid video.
    DivX/XviD=MPEG-4 ASP

Yup , basically downloaded TV shows , mostly from america, ever wonder how some people have seen episodes of the sopranos , lost , heroes , the wire , before its on TV here , well they would be Divx files. For the most part.

No... DivX is the equivalent of mp3 for sound format. Its a handy compression format and is widely used by pirates. Shushhhh....

They don't neccessarily have to post here, they may just be lurking in the shadows and will strike when you least expect it. Or just wait until someone reports a post...
I doubt they'll have an issue with this kind of discussion, so long as nobody is stupid enough to mention where you can attain these shows and such...

Nobody uses divx anymore, any .avi you get is more than likely xvid

If was divx only, it would be of know benefit really unless you like to encode in divx, anyways ppl thought the 360 would be divx only and that wasnt the case.

Screw Divx, its got a voice changer!!!!

Sounding like a robot > divx support.

My xvids work..in fact, with the wmv support, pretty much everything on my PC works now, without transcoding!

Also, there's a new very cool music visualiser not mentioned in the update notes.

    (It's up, btw)

Updated it earlier on, then stuck 4 movies and a couple of episodes of a TV show on my 4GB usb key just now. Damn thing won't recognise that there are any video files on the USB key.
Hopefully I'm doing something stupid, as I've been able to copy music and pics to the PS3 off that USB key previously...

Guess that proves that I was just being stupid:p
Cheers, I'll give that a try later

The opposite of bass is treble. Being pedantic here but the voice changer does pitch changing rather than tone changing I assume? I can change the tone with my EQ just fine and I imagine most people would rather be able to do the evil ransom phonecaller voice than enhance the richness of the bass tone in their normal voice :D

Nice update! I've tried most of the TV episodes my American cousin loaned me and it would say 80% of them work perfectly.
If they added XviD GMC, QP and custom matrix support I might get rid of my XBMC setup.

I'd just like to wish all American cousins a very merry christmas.

Anyway nice update, can't wait to start fecking around with the voice changer, and Naill0 thanks for the triangle tip, thats been wrecking my head for quiet a while.
