Mars, Twix, Snickers and Maltesers no longer OK for vegetarians

Popular chocolate bars Mars, Bounty, Milky Way, Snickers and Twix, as well as Minstrels, Maltesers choclate sweets, will no longer be suitable for vegetarians, because Masterfoods the company who make the products, said it had started to use rennet, which comes from the stomachs of calves.

Masterfoods say this has happened because they changed the sourcing of the ingredients used, however, the Vegetarian Society said the move was "incomprehensible" and that they are "extremely disappointed" by this news.

Masterfoods admit they began using rennet from 1 May 2007, and non-affected products had a "best before date" up to 1 October.

Rennet, which curdles milk, is used in the production of whey, and the ice cream versions of all Masterfoods' chocolate bars will also no longer be suitable for vegetarians.

Paul Goalby, corporate affairs manager of Masterfoods is reported to have said: "If the customer is an extremely strict vegetarian, then we are sorry the products are no longer suitable, but a less strict vegetarian should enjoy our chocolate."

    .....................why?

omg Mr. Goalby has as much sense as the Sony PR that accused Wii of being a novelty item.

Hey, this is no longer the case, they changed them to be no longer vegetarian, we dealt with them, a few weeks later they were back to being vegetarian.

Yea, this is fairly old, they changed their policy back but batches of the chocolate up to a certain date had the ingredient in them. All should be ok now.

I for one am disgusted these chocolate bars will not be containing any meat. IMO all food should have at least 50% meat content, vegetables in particular.

Rennet is a bacterial culture used to make more or less all forms of cheese

Red lipstick also has crushed beetles in it- saw a factory where its made. Also the pink bit of a battenburg cake is coloured from some sort of crushed bug.

Seemed like an insane thing for Masterfoods to do tho. Driving away customers is just bad business sense as lost income from veggies has to outway the extra cost in sourcing a supplier that is veggie friendly.

Tesco's Finest Crushed Beetles doesn't contain any beetles (crushed or otherwise).

Incidentally, some outlets in the powerscourt centre were till recently serving beetles - www.ireland.com/newspaper/breaking/2007/1204/breaking29.html?via=mr

Microbial rennet has been around for a very long time and IIRC it's cheaper and more consistant in quality than the calf version.

just to make that clear adults don't have rennet, it does NOT come from cows
Rennet comes from CALVES, with the real cute eyes that look at you with wonder and curiousty

look at the that shiney thing the man has, I want to see it, he's coming here, oh look he's putting it on my head, it's cold, I wonder what's fo... </calf>

Nope, *vegetarian* rennet - a more modern invention - is a product of recombinant (read: genetically engineered) bacteria. Traditional/original rennet, still used in certain artisan cheeses (such as Parmesan) is an enzyme extracted from the stomach of a calf (so the other poster who said calves stomach/tripe was being added to the chocolate is technically incorrect aswell ;) )

I remember this change back when it happened, and my understanding at the time (as the onmivorous girlfriend of a strict vegetarian I was paying attention) was that it wasn't rennet that was going to be used in the chocolate (it's not needed) but that the whey they were going to be using - which is a by-product of cheese manufacture - was no longer going to be guaranteed to come from vegetarian-friendly cheese production. So there wouldn't necessarily be any animal product in the chocolate itself (which is why some vegetarians may not have had a problem) but that one of the ingredients was going to be a by-product of a process in which animal product had been used.

Just like most/many vegetarians happily eat white sugar, as there is no actual animal product in it, but vegans won't touch the stuff, as it's refined using ground-up animal bones.

That was my understanding anyway. I may stand corrected ;)
